BEATRICE 2020 FALL SPORTS
PREVIEW
C2 | Friday, august 21, 2020
2020 outlook The Beatrice football team is coming
off a season in which they finished 3-6, but had many close games that could have gone either way in the end.
“There were times we looked like a very good team, but other times we made too many mistake,” said third year coach Todd Ekart. “We were close, but could never get over the top.”
Key players lost off that team in-clude Blayden Bayless, Dakota Adams and Boden Ruskamp. Returners in-clude Class B All-Stater Brody Nelson, who Ekart describes as a “very good player on offense and defense.”
Other key returners include Zane Hoffman, Nolan Bahnsen and Jack-son Zhang.
“These three will play offensive and defensive line,” Ekart said. “If they have a good year, we will be tough to beat.”
Jace Pethoud was derailed by in-juries last year and Ekart believes he could be an all-state type player on offense and defense. Bennett Cran-dall will be the signal caller for the Orangemen and will be asked to do more offensively.
Ekart said they need to improve their special teams coverage, but believes their strength will be their experience.
The schedule provides opportuni-ties for Beatrice with several oppo-nents in the middle of a rebuilding procces.
“In the middle of the season, games with Norris and Waverly look like they’ll be some of our toughest,” Ekart said. “We will definitely know where we rate after those two games. Our goal is to make a deep run in the playoffs.”

2020 outlook The Beatrice volleyball team came
just one win short of qualifying for the Class B State Tournament last year.
They lose seniors Mariah Allen and Devyn Burroughs off that team, but return the rest of their starting lineup.
Mak Hatcliff returns at libero. She has four years of varsity experience and is a Beatrice record holder for digs in a game and a season. Jaiden Cou-deyras returns at setter after starting last year.
Kaitlyn Church is a returning right side hitter who head coach Melissa Carper expects to put up numbers in
kills, blocks and ace serves. Chelsea Leners is a returning middle who came is last year as a new starter.
“Chelsea (Leners) is getting more aggressive with her attacks and will help our offense out more this year,” Carper said.
Carper said the team’s strength will be their good chemistry with the ma-jority of their seniors coming back.
“We’ve got a new look at conference and conference games with Wahoo, Plattsmouth and Platteview,” Carper said. “Or goal is to make it to state.”

2020 outlook The Beatrice softball team came within
one inning of winning a Class B State Championship last year.
They lose a good chunk of that starting lineup to graduation, including multiple offensive school record holder Addie Bar-nard. They also lost Whitney Schwisow, Olivia Aden, Hannah Lytle, Alexis Schwartz and Carley Leners.
They do return a big bat and good pitch-ing experience in Rylee Pangborn as well as consistent hitter and outfielder Reganne Henning. They return an athletic middle infielder in Avery Barnard and another
athletic infielder in Morgan Mahoney.“Avery (Barnard) has a good grasp of
how to play the game,” said head coach Gary Lytle. “Morgan (Mahoney) also has a good amount of experience.”
Tavia Hausman also returns with her big bat in the middle of the lineup. Riley Schwisow is a pitcher that can change speeds who also figures to possibly see playing time at third and first base.
“We’ve got some big shoes to fill,” Lytle said. “They are an athletic group, but we have a lot of youth and inexperience.”

2020 outlook The Beatrice boys tennis team had a solid
finish to last season with three of their four state tournament entries being seeded and their No. 2 doubles team finishing eighth at state.
Key players lost off that team are the No. 2 doubles team of Dawson Saathoff and Zack Zimmerman.
The Orangemen will return Connor Kelley at No. 1 singles, Max Meyer at No. 2 singles and Connor Freitag and Colt Dittbrenner at No. 1 doubles. Kelley, Meyer and Freitag are two year letter winners and state entrants while Dittbrenner is a three year letter winner and state entrant.
“All four of these seniors put in a very large amount of time in the off season working on individual skills while compet-ing in actual match play,” said head coach Karen Dittbrenner. “They know what it will take to reach their goals and each of them are driven to do just that.”
The schedule will be similar to previous year. They’ve added the York Invite as well as the Trailblazer Conference Tournament.
“We face several very tough opponents,” Dittbrenner said. “We want to win more invites, earn more individual medals and make a run at the state tournament.”

Beatrice cross country
2020 outlook The Beatrice girls cross country team finished ninth in last
year’s Class B State Meet. They lost two starters off that team in Veronica Pinkerton
and Trinity Eichenberger, both of whom were consistent medal winners. Pinkerton was conference champion.
The boys team lost Noah Hagemeier, who was also a con-sistent medal winner as well as Luke Netherton.
This year, head coach Lyle Claussen said the success of their teams will greatly depend on how the younger runners adapt to racing 5,000 meters.
Linda Humble, Abby Ware, Sarah Price, Mackenzie Hol-thus, Lauren Pieper and Brianna Brewer all have experience running at the varsity level and will be counted on to provide leadership.
Cheyne Oates, Josie Frerichs, Addieson Perrett and Erin Ware are all freshmen who could alos impact the team the team’s success.
On the boys side, Coleten Daake will be the team’s senior leader and he’ll be joined by Devon Busboom, Connor Ham-ilton, Ian Scheele and Owen Miner. That groups also looks to help provide leadership for sophomores Jaden Guernsey, Ashton Barber and Evan Coon. Colton Jelinek also joins the team and could impact the team.
“It will be an interesting season with a new conference,” Claussen said. “Fortunately, we will compete against most of these teams before the conference meet. We also have the honor of hosting the conference meet in the first season of competition.”
