Friday, April 22 2016 Dear Parents and Friends We have had a great start to Term 2! I was so impressed with the conduct of our students this morning at our ANZAC commemoration, and look forward to many students joining us for the ANZAC March on Monday. Our visiting speaker, Mr Reay Tuck, was very pleased with the reverence displayed by the students and their knowledge of the ANZAC tradition. He shared with the students some of the history of canine involvement in war and in the important work of rehabilitating returned soldiers, and this Monday will be the first time that dogs will march in the parade. Students are invited to join us from 8am in the old Coles Carpark at Meeting Point 19, ready to march at 8.30am. Students will then be collected at the end of the march near the MECC. Please ensure students are wearing their formal school uniform and school hat. Last night we had a large contingent of students who represented St Joseph’s at the Combined Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival at Pioneer Pool. Thank you to all of the staff and parents who assisted to make this carnival a success. Special thanks also to Mrs Hinschen and Mrs Fahl for their work in coordinating swimmers in the lead up to this event. Our students swam very well, taking home a huge haul of ribbons at the end of the night. Special congratulations go to Dane Wilson, who was awarded 12 Years Boys Age Champion, a fantastic achievement. St Joseph’s was also awarded the Boys Decimal Award and the Overall Points Decimal Award. Go St Joseph’s!

In another great sporting achievement for our school this week, our Under 11 Futsal team were awarded champions at the Whitsunday School Futsal Competition on Monday. Congratulations to Daniel Harris, Balin Tweddle, Oscar Tweddle, Hunter Searle, Lachlan McDonald, Brandon Mayne and Beau Byrne for a stellar effort and huge thanks to Mrs Lyn Harris for supervising the students on the day.

MOTHER’S DAY LITURGY To celebrate all of the wonderful women who contribute so much to the lives of the children in our school we are inviting all Mums, and those who take on the role of mother, to join us for a special liturgy of celebration on Friday 6 May at 8.40am. Following the liturgy, we invite all Mums to spend some time in class with your children, followed by a catered morning tea in the hall at 10am. We are also planning a special photo story to include in our celebration, and invite all families to submit a photo of the children with their Mum or important female role model to the office via email by Wednesday 4 May. Photos can be submitted to [email protected]. An invitation with RSVP slip was sent home with the eldest children in each family today, to assist us to cater for this event. We look forward to celebrating a special morning with these important women in our school community. SCHOOL REVIEW AND IMPROVEMENT In Week 4, the External Validating Team will be visiting St Joseph’s to validate the findings of the Internal Team for School Review and Improvement. An important part of this process is the team having the opportunity to meet with students, staff, parents and members of the wider community to formulate Commendations and Recommendations for us as a school, assisting us to ensure our School Development Plan is targeted towards growth for the future. Thank you to those parents who have indicated their willingness to be interviewed as part of this process and we look forward to the team visiting us shortly. Bianca Hodges Principal

LITURGY NEWS Mother’s Day Liturgy: Friday 6th May at 8.40am First Friday Mass: 4th June St Joseph’s to lead Friday Mass is celebrated each Friday at 12 noon. You are most welcome to join with the classes attending this each week.

As usual we will be participating in the ANZAC DAY march as a school body. The march will take place on Monday 25th April. Students are required to assemble at the old Coles carpark in Sydney Street from 8.00am. The march will commence at 8.35 and the morning ceremony will finish at approximately 10.30am. The march will finish at approximately 9.30am. At the end of the march, Marshalls should direct St. Joseph's Catholic Primary into Alfred Street, neat to the MECC. Children are to be picked up from Alfred Street We would strongly encourage any students who are able to please be part of the ANZAC Day march. Students are required to wear their formal school uniform with black shoes and white socks. School hats must be worn.

This year parents are asked to deliver their students to the carpark and once they have been placed in the care of a staff member parents are requested to vacate the carpark. Organisers of the march have requested this is in order to make the assembly and organisation of all students involved more efficient. THANKYOU: A big thankyou to members of the SRC and a very special thankyou to Mr Tuck who joined us for our ANZAC assembly this morning and spoke to our community. It was great to have a returned service man speak to us and present us with such an interesting address. Thank you again Mr Tuck. “LOOSE CHANGE FUNDRAISER” As part of our efforts for the Jubilee Year of Mercy we are asking students to bring in loose change - silver coins - during the next fortnight as a donation towards our fundraiser. Monies raised will be used to purchase materials to make up stationery packs for students in the Solomon Islands and Fiji where much devastation was caused by the recent cyclone. The school has donated desks and recycled books to the area and the SRC will be working with staff to put together stationery parcels for students in these areas. Our thanks to the Rotary personnel who are arranging for our donations to be sent overseas in May via shipping container. Remember it doesn’t matter how small the donation every little helps. Some of the homes in these villages do not have a book in the house so every donation is greatly appreciated! Donations can be placed in the classroom mission boxes or dropped into the large mission box in the office. Thanks in advance for your help!

SCHOOL PHOTOS

YEAR 6 SETTLER’S HUTS Last term Year Six students designed and constructed their own Settler’s Hut which was set in the 1800’s. Students researched and investigated two types of huts; the Wattle and Daub and Slab Hut. They were fortunate enough to display and ‘show off ‘ their fabulous work to all classes last Friday in the Hall. Mr and Mrs Grundy and I were most impressed with the effort, design and construction of the huts and congratulate each and every student in Year Six for their hard work. The huts will be on display in the library this term so if you get a chance come in and have a look – they are fabulous!

For the convenience of our school community, school photos can be ordered and paid for online using a secure online platform. Orders placed online DO NOT require an envelope, cash/cheques or paperwork returned to school. Envelope Orders: photos can also be purchased in the traditional manner using an envelope, with cash/cheque enclosed. The preference of our school is that orders and payments be made online, as this reduces the administration and associated security issues related to the return of cash & envelopes on photo day.

To place your order visit www.advancedlife.com.au and enter the code- G7V JBZ A35. This code can also be found

printed on your envelope. Please be aware that- 1. Sibling/Family Photos can be ordered online or via envelope. To ensure a smoothly run photo day, online

orders for Sibling/Family Photos will be cut off at 12.00 a.m. the night before our photo day to allow a list of students that require Sibling/Family Photographs taken to be compiled. Sibling photos can still be ordered after the online cut off date by collecting an envelope from the office and returning the envelope on photo day with your payment enclosed.

2. All online orders should be placed on or before our day of photography. 3. The online code above may also be used to order sports and other group photos.

All orders placed online will be delivered to the school for collection

- Our school photos will be taken on the Monday 30th May 2016
