Don’t Miss Our Fresno Grizzlies Baseball Night April 5

We are only a few short days until our first event of the year, watching

the Fresno Grizzlies play Friday evening April 5. We will have our own sky box, a catered dinner, prizes, and fireworks to follow the game!

The game is VS Reno and starts at 7:05 p.m. at Chukchansi Park. The event

includes a suite with patio and outside seating, and all you can eat food and drinks (soda and water) for 1 ½ hours. A Grizzly special edition ball cap and Fireworks are included! This is a $60 value with two free tickets to C27’s and half price ($30) for additional tickets and for vendors.

Momentum is Building in the Chapter

The momentum is building and we could definitely benefit by having several others volunteer to serve on our board. Come join us and help grow this chapter into one that benefits all of its members and the surrounding community.

By the way, I did have a very encouraging meeting with two administrators serving the Fresno Unified School District and the Adult School. They are very interested in having businesses partner with them as advisers, teachers, and mentors. These students and adults could become a great source of new employees in our busi-nesses as well. Those that work in class with them or offer appren-ticeships can see first-hand their skills and work ethic.

Sunnyside and Hoover High School both offer some training in agriculture and environmental sciences. The Fresno Adult School is anxious to partner as well as they get grant monies as students add new skills. Almost all of these men and women are looking for a career. I think this can become a win-win for CLCA members and for our community. We need help launching this endeavor as well. I will be visiting the three schools in the next few weeks. Call me if you are interested in joining me or getting more informa-tion!

HR Updates Meeting Proposed for May 14It has been proposed that our next event be an educational one, perhaps on HR updates that have occurred for 2019. SAVE THE DATE! We still need a site and speaker. Tuesday evening, May 14 has been set aside as the date for this Educational Meeting. More information as it becomes available.

Chapter President’s Forum June 18-19 There is an open invitation to attend the Chapter President’s Forum (CPC) in Sacramento June 18-19 for some training and education for present or future chapter leaders. Maria Abero from State HQ was suggesting our Treasurer should attend, but Ryan is presently too busy working into his new position. Does anyone have interest in attending? I think there is also a guest motivational speaker, Jim Paluch. Let me know in the next few days otherwise I will assume that I will be the only one attending from our chapter. Thank you! – Jeff

TreeTown USA Acquires Midas Nursery Solutions

TreeTown USA has acquired one of the leading horticulture automation companies, Midas Nursery Solutions of Hillsboro,

Oregon for an undisclosed amount. The agreement represents TreeTown USA’s first acquisition that doesn’t consist of a nursery operation and further solidifies its continuing commitment to deploying the most advanced automation, mechanization, and lean practices available in the industry.

According to TreeTown USA CEO Jonathan Saperstein, “Having Midas as a part of the family will go a long way in helping us develop, implement and insti-tutionalize industry leading solutions to mechanization and lean practices. What’s more, this expanded relationship will allow us to better capitalize on Midas’ capabilities and values that they have continued to demonstrate over the years of our work with them.”

Matt Gold, Midas Nursery Solutions president, commented, “The opportunity to continue my work alongside the excellent leader-ship team at TreeTown USA and have access to TreeTown USA’s tremendous resources to help them achieve their objectives was something I just couldn’t pass up.”

Are Your Employee Hiring Practices Putting Your Business at Risk? From an article by Rieva Lesonsky in AllBusiness

Few small business owners relish the process of hiring employees. It takes time away from their business, it’s stressful, and most

entrepreneurs don’t enjoy interviewing job candidates. What’s more, the hiring process could be opening your small business to legal risks even without your knowing it.

Reading a recent survey by QuickBooks Payroll about small-busi-ness hiring, I was shocked by some of the reasons business owners give for not hiring job candidates. Specifically:

• 3% of business owners in the survey have rejected a job candidate due to nationality or race.

• 3% have rejected a job candidate for being too old.

• 13% have rejected a candidate because of their social media history.

Discrimination at work is in the news frequently, but the stories usually focus on discrimination against people who have already been hired. Equally important are the laws that apply to discrimi-nation in hiring. If a person isn’t hired and suspects they were rejected for a reason that has nothing to do with their ability do the job, they could sue your company for discrimination.

Apparently, some small business owners need a refresher course on hiring laws. Here are some areas where you might be making serious mistakes in hiring employees without even knowing it.

Social Media ActivityCan you use social media to help you make a decision when hiring employees? Well, yes – but this area is full of potential landmines. Here are some rules to follow:

• If you plan to review a job candidate’s social media history as part of the hiring process, make that clear in the job posting and reiterate it during the interview.

• Be sure to conduct the same type of social media review for every job candidate.

• When reviewing social media usage, look at the aspects of the candidate’s social media presence that relate to their ability to do the job—not to their status as a protected class of employee, such as religion, gender, race, or age.

Suppose you’re hiring a salesperson. Looking at how active they are on LinkedIn and how many contacts they have is relevant to the job you’re hiring for. If you want to hire someone who’s very active and effective on social media, examining that aspect of their activity is a reasonable part of the hiring decision.

However, if you see the person posts on LinkedIn about their activities with their church, and you don’t approve of their religion so you decide not to interview or hire them, that is discriminatory.

Race or National OriginNational origin and citizenship status are not the same thing. All employers are required by federal law to verify new hires’ citizen-ship status using Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Some 13.75% of employers in the survey I read say they rejected a job candidate because the candidate could not legally work in the United States.

Rejecting a job candidate based on race or national origin, however, is different. For instance, perhaps a job candidate appears to be equally qualified as all of the other candidates based on his resume. However, he appears to be Hispanic, so you decide not to interview him because you assume he might not have the legal right to work in this country. That’s discriminatory.

Age Discrimination in Hiring EmployeesIn some situations, a job candidate’s age is a legitimate consider-ation in their job qualifications. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), 14 is the minimum age for hiring. The FLSA also regulates the number of hours minors under age 16 can work and restricts them from certain hazardous work such as driving motor vehicles and operating heavy equipment. If you want an employee to serve alcohol or work in a bar setting job candidates will need to meet your state’s requirement for the legal drinking age. Protect your business from accusations of age discrimination. Don’t ask for a candidate’s age on job applications unless it is directly relevant to the job (as in hiring a bartender). During the interview, don’t ask how old they are.

Unintentional Discrimination When Hiring EmployeesMaking assumptions about job candidates can lead to uninten-tional discrimination. For instance, suppose a job requires working on Sundays. If you assume a job candidate who mentions her active role in her church during the interview wouldn’t be inter-ested, that could be discriminatory. Don’t jump to conclusions: Just ask her if she is willing to work on Sundays.

Your employee recruitment policies may also unintentionally be discriminatory. Want ads that ask “recent college graduates” to apply could be seen as discriminating against older candidates. Using language such as “entry-level position” will show that you’re looking for candidates with limited experience, without being discriminatory.

Protected employee categories under the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC) include race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, and genetic informa-tion.

Still not sure if your hiring practices are exposing you to risk? You can learn more at the Department of Labor website, the EEOC website, or by working with an HR consultant or attorney with experience in employment law.

Power of Personal Feedback By Jim Paluch, JP Horizons

We Want Your Feedback…Why Do You Ask?

It’s easy to understand the power of listening to what others have to say. What is a little more subtle to figure out in the process of obtaining feedback is to consider what questions are being asked and really evaluate why you are asking them. Sometimes we feel we are being

diplomatic by seeking feedback but have no intention or means of acting on the answers we get. Actually you can do more harm than good by asking for feedback and failing to respond to it than if you would have proceeded without asking in the first place.

There are a lot of ways to creatively obtain the feedback of our customers. Before engaging in the standard yet effective methods below, be honest enough to answer the following questions and then move on with purpose as you improve and grow.

1. What’s in it for them?2. What are we asking and why?3. What will we do with the feedback? Can we use it to make our

product or employees better?4. Do we really want to know what they have to say?5. Are we willing to consider that feedback and work it into the actual product or service we are offering or the way we offer it?

Surveys – A very effective tool if the client has a reason to fill it out. Are they taking their precious time because they feel compelled to give their opinion or is it a matter of respect for you that they are giving feedback?

Onsite Communication – There is no better way to find out what someone else is thinking than asking them face to face. Take advantage of the limited opportunities you might have to say, “What Do You Think?” Be aware of what is being said and what is not being said to get the whole story.

Phone Calls – Next to looking someone in the eye, the best feedback can come over the phone. Be careful to really ask and then listen and beware of planting the responses you want to hear.

Email – We all know the power of an effective email but also can relate with the impersonal side of the way we often communicate today. Remember that important client communications can be followed up with a card or a phone call to reinforce your connec-tion.

Power of Personal FeedbackDo you ever ask your children what they want to do on the weekend and then follow your own agenda? Do you ever ask your spouse for their opinion on a subject and then ignore their response? Have you ever sat in a team meeting, taken notes on a great batch of ideas on a current project and then returned to your office to pick up where you left off? You know you have, and so have we.

The rules on asking for advice or feedback are the same in our personal lives as they are in business. Don’t ask for an opinion or advice if you aren’t going to listen or aren’t willing to consider that someone else’s way might be better than your own. Just imagine all the situations that might have turned out better if we had just taken time to ask for help and then taken it to heart.

• Worksite Safety Inspections – Your company must have a mechanism for finding and correcting safety hazards on your jobsites. These inspections need to be conducted on a regular basis (at least quarterly).

• Ensuring Employee Compliance – You must enforce company safety rules. We recommend having a written disciplinary program that includes these words “Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination”.

Trout & Salmon Derby a Big Success

Past Chapter President and Fishing Derby VIP Michelle Brown of Normac reports that our world famous Yosemite Chapter

Fishing Derby was a big success. The event was held March 23-24 at Lake Don Pedro. The 26th Annual George Schaaf Trout & Salmon Derby gained participants over last year’s numbers, and was a blast. This continues to be one of our Chapter’s most successful and fun-filled events, and this year did not disappoint.

Michelle wanted to thank all those hard-working and dedicated folks and companies that spent time or became a Sponsor, or contributed raffle prizes to the cause. Among these are Hunter, RainBird, Toro, NORMAC, SiteOne, Kichler, as well as several local vendors. Special hats off to Debra Spencer of LCIS for the hours she spent helping to coordinate the event at all levels.

If you weren’t able to participate this year, Michelle says be sure sign up early next year. You won’t regret it.

Social Media Campaign in the WorksSavannah Treloar and our friends at Delta Bluegrass are spear-heading an effort to get our chapter more involved in Facebook and Instagram for the purpose of promoting chapter events and recruiting new members.
