The Importance of Health Literacy MonthAttending a doctor’s appointment or other medical visit, whether routine or otherwise, can be a stress-ful experience for anyone. Walking into a medical facility and speaking with medical sta can be quite overwhelming for anyone already worried about their health. Did you know that over half of all American adults have a diculty understanding and using health information? This amounts to 90 million peo-ple who have issues understanding health information given to them by their care providers. October honors Health Literacy Month, a time for organizations – such as Allen Hospital – to reflect on the ways in which we present health information in patient-friendly ways.

An individual’s literacy skills are a strong foreteller of their health status. Research shows that patients understand less than 50% of health infor-mation presented to them by medical sta and providers. Often, patients will find and use various coping skills to hide these low literacy skills.

When reflecting on these statistics, Allen’s CARE values come to mind – es-pecially Compassion: recognizing the needs of others and reaching out to comfort and heal — smile and be kind, communicate respectfully, listen and reach out to help, anticipate what others need. These values are key when fighting the statistics mentioned above. When talking with patients and fam-ilies, always present health information in an approachable and friendly way in order to promote an easier understanding of the overwhelming informa-tion regarding the state of their health. Employee Engagement SurveyThank you to everyone who took time to complete the online survey. As of this morning, Allen’s survey participation is at 86%. Once IBM/Kenexa reviews the results with their final calculations, they will give us the final numbers.

Senior leaders stopped by to recognize 3Heart for being the first 24/7 large department (over 40 sta) to reach 100% participation completing the Employee Engage-ment Survey.

Q: In the department I work in we have“floats” that fill in an area if permanent person is o. So if a “float” comes in the morning and sees they are assigned an area they don’t like to work in and tells management they are “sick” and not staying shouldn’t there be some sort of disciplinary action?A: If the person is assigned work andthe management and HR identifies that there is a misuse of company policy or a fraudulent act then the employee will be talked to and appropriately disciplined. If the person is legitimately “sick” then they receive an absence or early depar-ture which would be counted toward their attendance records and potentially a discipline.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

Q: If a person has been terminatedfrom a department, can they be rehired in another department of the hospital? If so, is there a waiting period? Can they be hired by a UnityPoint Clinic or anoth-er UnityPoint Hospital?A: The answer is that each situationis reviewed on a case by case basis. It is dependent on the reason for the person leaving. In most cases if we have ended the employment the individual would not be eligible for rehire in any depart-ment. The clinic and or other UnityPoint hospitals are separate entities and they would decide based upon a standard background check that they would conduct.Steve Sesterhenn, HR

THINK HEALTHY

Q: Why do we have to do our ownflier/poster designs now? Can we have a central location for creative work to be done here at our facility?A: As we work toward the goals ofsustainability and adding value, market-ing and communication across Unity-Point Health has changed so that our main focus is on developing and imple-menting strategic marketing to support organizational goals. All detailed graphic design requests are now being routed to a system creative services depart-ment to reduce duplication and share materials. With this change, we are now empowering sta at all aliates to produce flyers and posters by using templates that are already designed and setup for easy use. The strategy is to keep flyer and poster development easy and on brand. If you need assistance with templates and training, please call Robin Nicholson at ext. 3516.Angie Fuller, Marketing & Communications

Watch the campaign video

PTO Buy-OutUse It, Lose It or . . . Donate ItYou may have attended the recent associate forums and watched the For Allen For You campaign video. If not, please check out the video right here. The goal of the Allen Associate Campaign is 100 percent giving and many associates are using their PTO as an easy method of donation. The For Allen For You campaign oers the option to donate and receive a tax deduction as allowed by law.

This $21.3 million comprehensive campaign includes three important projects that will expand Allen’s impact for generations: • UnityPoint Health – Prairie Parkway, a new compre-

hensive medical home in Cedar Falls focused on pa-tient-centered, convenient and coordinated care in a high-growth area of the Cedar Valley.

• Allen College initiatives that will provide new and ren-ovated facilities for expanding programs and create ad-ditional endowed scholarship support for the college’s growing enrollment.

• Renovation of Allen Hospital’s Birthing Center/Neona-tal Intensive Care and Pediatrics Units, responding to changing trends in OB/newborn care and the need to keep families together when their babies and children require expert care.

If you have questions about the For Allen For You cam-paign, please contact Dee Vandeventer, chief develop-ment ocer, at (319) 274-6712 or by email at [email protected].

Join with the many others that have already given to help us reach our associate goal of 100 percent giving. What a statement that will make to the greater community! When we reach that goal, Pam Delagardelle, Jerry Durham and Dee Vandeventer look forward to dying their hair in the campaign colors.

Thanks for being part of the associate campaign to help us reach 100 percent!

Download and print a copy of the pledge form.

Giving & Receiving

The flu season starts soon.We must take proper precautions now to prevent the

spread of the virus to our patients, colleagues and families. It’s a requirement for being part of our organization, and it’s the right thing to do.

In order to ensure the health and safety of UnityPoint Health – Waterloo and safeguard our patients, every Allen associate, volunteer, student and contractor must be vacci-nated for influenza or present a signed physician’s waiver by November 20, 2015. If an Allen associate fails to receive an influenza immunization within one week following the des-ignated date, they will receive a written discipline that will become part of their employee record. If the associate fails to receive the requested immunization within two weeks following the designated date, additional discipline will be issued.

Participation in the program includes: • Receiving a flu vaccination at no cost at one of the sched-

uled flu shot clinics.• Providing proof of immunization to Allen Employee

Health if you receive a vaccination from any other pro-vider or pharmacy. You must pay for any other vaccina-tion. Proof of immunization includes a signed physician’s note, immunization record or a copy of a medical record. Fax documentation to (319) 235-3729.

• Providing proper documentation to Allen Employee Health if you have a medical exception or religious rea-sons preventing you from receiving the flu vaccine – forms are available on the HR tab on AllenNet. You must file a new waiver this year if you are not being vaccinated.

The 2015 deadline is Friday, November 20. Individuals who have not been vaccinated may be required to wear masks during working hours, depending on the prevalence and severity of influenza in our area this flu season. That re-quirement will be announced if it is necessary by Dr. Tim Horrigan, our chief medical ocer.

Vaccination is free to associates, volunteers, contract employees, and students only during the flu shot clinics. Once clinics end, you will be responsible for the cost out-of-pocket. During clinic dates, vaccination is available only in the flu shot clinic, not in Occupational Health.
