Alumni Day And Community Meeting
On Friday, December 23, the Sizer community had a very full half-day before heading off on break.
During the morning, each grade level met with a panel of
Sizer School/NCCES alumni to listen to their experiences
post-high school, and to ask questions about those experi-
ences. We are very grateful to the almost 40 alumni who at-
tended and spent their morning sharing their personal sto-
ries with our current students.
After the lunch/advisory rotation, the entire school gathered in the gym for the
holiday community meeting. There was a lip synch battle, singing, games, danc-
ing, an ugly sweater contest, and our alumni joined the Community Meeting
Players on stage for a sing-a-long with the school.
Thank you to our Community Meeting Players (students who, under Ms. Cordio's guidance, organize and host community meet-
ings) for their professionalism during the meeting. There were technical difficulties early on that left those on stage without
working microphones. They carried on successfully, and we hope they regained their voices over break. Job well done!
Mrs. Sweeney was too pretty to win the
ugly sweater contest.
Thank you to all the alumni that attended, and
we loved that so many of you stayed for
community meeting!

Digging Into Seventh Grade Science
Although we have had some changes this year in Science, it is more enjoyable than you might think. Even though Ms. Spingla is
out on leave, Ms.Vanderhoof is a hardworking and caring teacher. She has in-depth knowledge of the subject; and even though
it’s an ancient topic, she finds a way to relate it to our modern world. If we did not have this science course available to us, we
would be missing out on significant information, so we are thankful to have Ms.Vanderhoof here with us.
So far in science we have learned about the Geologic Time Scale, fossils (and how to tell how old they are, how to measure vol-
ume, mass, weight, etc.); currently, we are learning about tectonic plates. Some of these topics are about events from millions of
years ago, but Ms. Vanderhoof can tie it to our modern times, and helps us understand how it impacts our world now and in the
future.

Seventh graders in Mr. Aubuchon’s Technology Class just finished a unit on computer programming using Scratch. As a final
project they created either games or animations. Six students from first period agreed to share their work here. Photos of the
games are shown here. If you want to play the game or watch the animation, the links are in the box below.

As the weather has turned colder and the snow flies, it is that time of year when we wonder if school will be cancelled, delayed,
or on schedule.
In the event of a delay or cancellation, you should receive an email, text, and/or phone call. Additionally, closures are listed on
channels 5, 7, and 25.
If we do have snow but school is not delayed or cancelled, please
make a decision about what works for you and your family. Above
all, we want our students to be safe, and with Sizer representing
such a wide geographic area, we understand that some commutes
are longer or more snowy than others.
Should you decide to stay home, please call the school to report the
absence, and safe travels!

Invitation To Join Green Team
At the November community meeting, members of the Sizer School Youth Venture Green Team spoke to the student body about
their organization. The community was impressed with what Claire had to say, and she agreed to let us share her words.
“Hello, my name is Claire, and I’m in ninth grade. I first joined Green Team in September of 2015. I have always cared about
the environment and this was my chance to do something to help it.
I know that it can be hard to try something new. And it’s a lot to ask for you to change the world. It’s a daunting task. But I’m
not changing the world, WE are. It only takes a little bit of courage to seek out others who share your passion and work together
to make a difference.
Green Team is truly a team. When you’re a part of it you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. Everything we’re doing,
everything we’ve done, and everything we will do, I have learned from and helped with. I have been inspired by the great student
leaders we have in Green Team today.
And I have written this to ask you to be the leaders of tomorrow. So every student can have the opportunity to be a part of some-
thing bigger than themselves for years to come. We are more powerful united, and together our future can be amazing.”
If YOU have an amazing idea about how to change the world, see Mrs. Powers or
Ms. Craigen for information on Youth Venture.

Join our team! Each year we select expedition teams of 8-9 teenage girls and 3 instructors to spend 12 days exploring and learn-
ing about glaciers and the alpine or marine environment. Through scientific field studies with professional glaciologists, ecolo-
gists, artists, and mountaineers, you will build critical thinking skills, gain self-confidence, and make lasting friendships. One
team explores Mount Baker, an ice-covered volcano in the North Cascades of Washington State. Another team sleeps under the
midnight sun while exploring an Alaskan glacier. Our third team explores the connections between glacier and ocean by
kayak in Resurrection Bay, near Seward, AK.

Inspiring Girls Expeditions are open to girls aged 16 and 17 on June 1, 2017. Most expeditions are open to girls all over the world
and don't require any specific skills, just a willingness to learn and explore and to do some physical tasks. Some programs have
exceptions so please read over the expedition page and the FAQ section before applying.
W H A T A R E W E L O O K I N G F O R ?
Each Inspiring Girls expedition combines many aspects of science, art, critical thinking, and mountaineering or kayaking. We
are looking for girls who will each contribute in a unique way to the team. Ideally, you will have something to bring to the team
so that you will not only learn from your leaders, but also will teach each other. Therefore, we do not choose girls based solely on
their individual applications - we choose the team as a whole, based on what the girls can bring to the team.
T H E S E A R E T H E O V E R A L L C R I T E R I A F O R B U I L D I N G O U R T E A M :
1. Diversity of backgrounds: a range of ethnic, cultural, economic, family, and geographic backgrounds.
2.
3. Diversity of interests and life experiences: what can you bring to the team? We seek a balance of interests in science, en-
vironment and outdoors, art, philosophy, social issues, politics, and more. If you are passionate about something, tell us
about it.
4.
5. Opportunity: this is a unique, free program and we look for girls who stand to gain the most from the experience, and
who have not necessarily had access to many extra-curricular opportunities before. We look at both your answers to the
questions as well as your teacher recommendations in considering this aspect of our selection criteria.
6.
Please consider that we are not necessarily looking for girls who are top athletes, have the best grades, or participate in the
most extracurricular activities. We are also not looking for girls who are just seeking to boost their resume or college applica-
tion. We are looking for girls who have a genuine interest in science, art, critical thinking and the outdoors, and who wouldn’t
normally have opportunities to experience those things outside of school.
If you think an Inspiring Girls expedition might not be the right match for you, please check out this list of other fantastic oppor-
tunities. (http://www.inspiringgirls.org/alternative-opportunities)
For questions concerning eligibility, problems with the application process, recommendation requests, and other frequently
asked questions, please see the FAQ on our webpage (http://www.inspiringgirls.org/) or contact: [email protected]

Prom Preliminary Planning Powwow
Wednesday, January 11, 2017 Div. III Lunch in cafeteria
At Sizer, our Prom is student-driven. It is a Junior-Senior prom so ALL Div. III voices are neces-
sary to make this truly YOUR Prom. Therefore all Div. III students are encouraged to participate
in this meeting-it’s your ideas (and work) that will make this a great event for juniors and seniors.
Don’t think you’re interested in Prom? Then we really need your voice to help us make it an
event you’d like to attend. We’ll be talking about Sizer expectations, venues, cost/affordability,
theme (or lack thereof), and any other
ideas you may have.
A couple of students have agreed to do
some preliminary checking of some venues
(prices and availability), so we will have a
jumping off place to start discussing this
year’s Prom.
See Mrs. Calcaterra with questions.
