The chaotic life of 12 year old is too hard and you never know what's coming next. In The 25th Annual Putnam County Spell-
ing Bee, an eclectic group of six prepubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilari-
ous and touching stories from their home lives, they spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-
crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.
Admission price: FREE for Sizer students

Last Friday, our SL9 (Service Learning 9) group*, the Arts group, visited SiTA to be audience volunteers for their new
musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”, Sizer’s first musical in eight years! The shows will be running this
week, with two casts performing. One cast will be performing on Thursday 5/31 at 7pm, Saturday 6/2 at 2pm, and Sunday 6/3 at
5pm. The other cast will be performing on Friday 6/1 at 7pm, Saturday 6/2 at 7pm, and Sunday 6/3 at 2pm.
While the whole play was immensely enjoyable, we really loved the beginning half of the play, as we got to be audience
volunteers. The experience was very inclusive for the audience volunteers, and was quite enjoyable comically and environmen-
tally. Being inclusive, this play catches its audience unexpectedly and holds them there wanting the next line. The characters of
the play were played amazingly by the students, and showed they were clearly invested within the role. This gave a fresh
breath of life into the entire play, and made every line said by each character feel real and genuine, especially when communi-
cating to the volunteers.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a great musical that incorporates audience participation brilliantly.
This play will truly draw you in for a fantastic experience and we implore you to come. Admission is free for students attending
Sizer and $10 for anyone else. Please come to our school’s amazing musical!
*SL9 is a freshman project where students work with peers and community partners to learn, grow, and empathize through
service.

Pav Advisory Wins! Yesterday's eighth grade medieval fair was a hit with intellectual games such as chess and Celtic knot drawing, as well as
physical feats like sword fighting, and juggling Each competition was filled with laughter and fun. The tournament was a won-
derful way to open the medieval faire.
Each noble advisory battled it out for the most overall points in the tournament, but with a leading blank points, the Pavlosky
advisory won it all!
“It felt extremely nice to win,” said
Liam Cronin, leaving the tournament
with a smile.
Piper Daley added, “I was glad we
came together as an advisory.” The
tournament left every student and
teacher with nothing but a huge grin.
The student-favored melee was one of the biggest events of the morning! Surprise alliances sprung across teams turning advi-
sory against advisory. Water balloons flew, flags were captured, and the points were counted. At the end of our banquet, Mr.
Perrigo knighted the winning students with great fanfare.
It was the perfect way for eighth-grade to play and celebrate together.

Eighth-Grade Transforms Gym into a
Medieval and Renaissance Museum!
Community members were treated to a student-centered learning experience at the second half of our annual Faire. The eighth
-grade set-up shop in the gym, and even spilled into ACT and onto the field to display their learning in a variety of amazing
ways.
The museum was the culmination of a month long research project in which students practiced finding and evaluating sources,
identifying big ideas, and planning to educate and engage an audience. “It was inspiring!” said Mrs. Tuttle. “Many of the sev-
enth-graders came back to class excited for next year.”
“One of my favorite parts of the museum was the choice,” said 8th Grader Audrey Forte. Kids got to decide what they wanted to
do, as long as they could relate it to the time period. The range of projects was wide. For example:
• Ava and Rayna’s Medieval Hair Salon.
• Josh’s wandering Bard.
• Outdoor Quest for the Holy Grail led by Maria and Sage.
• Comparison of the Avengers versus the Knights of the Round Table by Jaden.
• Yvenson’s and Cam’s analysis of Sports of Medieval Asia.

The Opioid Crisis and Marijuana Use
Through the Eyes of a Fitchburg Paramedic By Audrey Cox
We have been working on individual projects of choice in our Strategic Reading and Writing class. The topics we chose are the
opioid crisis, marijuana usage for teens, and mass shootings. Through this process we have been finding people in our commu-
nity to interview who have a lot of experience in these topics. Our first interview was with Nurse Zwicker and our first field trip
was to the North Street Fitchburg Fire Station.
On Wednesday May 16th, our group interviewed Captain Courte-
manche and took a tour of the fire station. He is a part time
nurse, a paramedic, and he is also a firefighter. Here is a list of
things we have learned from our new experiences.
• Narcan is a substance used to reverse the effects of an opioid
overdose; it is shot up your nose and sometimes you need more
than one dose to completely reverse the effects.
• As a citizen you can carry Narcan if you take a special one
hour class.
• In Fitchburg normally middle age teens through people in
their mid 40s tend to use opioids the most.
• Captain Courtemanche reports that in his 24 hour shifts he
sees waves of overdoses; this means that sometimes it's a lot (7 -
10) and sometimes its little (1 - 3) but sometimes it can be in the
middle (3 - 5).
• Overdoses in Fitchburg occur about 1-3 times on average in a
24 hour shift; over time, it’s usually the same people that over-
dose.
• Natural Marijuana is not a gateway drug according to Cap-
tain Courtemanche; Marijuana is not a worry to the paramedics
unless it is laced with unnatural substances.
• Homeless people tend to abuse alcohol the most, not opioids.

Still Time To Help Sizer School Support ASPCA
Hello Sizer Community! My name is Samuel Scobie and I’m a cur-
rently a Junior finishing up my Junior Exploration. The essential
question all of my work is revolving around is, “How can the safety
standards currently in place for football helmets be practically im-
proved upon?” As part of my project, I have established a social media
chronicle using Twitter to recorded my progress throughout the year.
I’m almost done with Junior Exploration this year, but I intend to
keep using this social media feed to chronicle the progress I make next
year on Senior Project. If you want to follow along as I finish my ex-
ploration and begin my project you can go to https://twitter.com/
samuelscobieex and click the “Follow” button, or open up the Twitter
app, search for @SamuelScobieEx, and click or tap the “Follow” but-

Think. Care. Act. For sixteen years, Sizer School has been engaging young people in active
learning and empowering them on their educational journey. Regardless of where they start,
students leave Sizer with tools to succeed in life and become leaders in their own communi-
ties. Our motto of “Think, Care, Act” is not just something we say, it is something we live.
While at Sizer, all students are ensured equal access to
academic resources and enrichment opportunities that make
up a Sizer education. The Sizer School Foundation provides needed funds so students can
attend field trips, compete
on an athletic team and utilize up to date technology.
So where do I come in? By making a gift to the Annual Campaign, you help Sizer bridge
the gap between the funding we receive from the state and our commitment to leveling the playing field for all students. Your
donation will sustain this mission-critical work.
Thank you for helping Sizer students think, care and act!
Best,
Courtney Harter, Executive Director
