CHURCHILL CLEAN UP CONTINUES, RACING RETURNS TONIGHT Racing will return to Churchill Downs tonight, two days after a tornado touched down at the historic track, as clean-up efforts continue. While the track=s main facility was not damaged in the storm, nine barns and several stable area structures suffered significant damage. No injuries were reported, but 150 horses were relocated to the nearby Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center and track officials, in conjunction with the Red Cross, found temporary shelter for 100 stable-area workers whose accommodations were damaged in the storm. Churchill remained closed for live racing, training and simulcast wagering yesterday, but by mid-morning Thursday officials had made the decision to resume racing with tonight=s Downs After Dark program. AWe are incredibly fortunate to have survived last night=s tornado without injury to our backstretch human or equine population,@ reported Churchill Downs president Kevin Flanery. AWe have a lot to clean up and are coordinating with horsemen whose barns were affected on relocation arrangements for horses that may need to be moved off site--and returned to the track for live racing--for the remainder of our 2011 Spring Meet.@ Tonight=s Downs After Dark card will feature a APony Up for Charity@ fundraiser which will give customers the option to add a dollar or more to their food and beverage tab. Proceeds from the already scheduled promotion will now go to support backstretch storm victims. ASome horsemen lost equipment and feed and many backstretch workers= living accommodations were damaged or compromised by the storm,@ Flanery continued. AWe are hoping our guests will give generously to help those in our extended racing family that have immediate needs due to the storm.@ Carlton Given Green Light... DRAW DAY, CANADIAN STYLE Despite overnight showers and the looming threat ofrain in the Toronto area Thursday, the draw breakfastahead of Sunday=s Queen=s Plate went off without ahitch at Woodbine Race Track yesterday morning.

Greeted by mildtemperatures and evensome sunshine, I mademy way to Woodbine=scorporate tent, whichis convenientlysituated only a fewmeters away from thetrack=s famed E.P.Taylor Turf Course. With the weatheropting to cooperate, organizers left thefrench doors wide toallow the light breezeto work its way

through an immaculately dressed dining room, resplendent with plenty of flowers, food and goodiesfor the participants (Thank you HBPA Ontario andWoodbine!). I must admit our Canadian friends in thenorth sure know how to cater to their supporters.Among those seen in the crowd was current on-airanalyst and former riding great Sandy Hawley (who istied with Avelino Gomez and Robin Platts with fourQueen=s Plate victories) and Terra Racing=s Dom andFrank Romeo, owners of last year=s Plate hero Big RedMike. On hand to MC the event was Woodbine=s trackannouncer Dan Loiselle, who did as good a job as Ihave ever seen at this type of venue. The legendaryvoice of Woodbine carried off his hosting duties in greatfashion, played to the crowd throughout and was quickas a cobra when a moment called for an amusingwitticism. There are too many to recount here, however, one that stands out was during the postposition draw for Queen=splatekitten. Woodbine=s JulieBell, who was enlisted to relay the desired postpositions for all the connections of the Plate hopefulsthat were absent from the event, appeared to linger fora brief moment while carrying out her phone duties onlyto have Loiselle inquire, AYou on the phone with yourboyfriend?@ The crowd laughed heartily, knowing all towell that it was in fact the colt=s trainer, Todd Pletcher,on the other end of the line. All joking aside, the MillHouse representative--who is listed at 7-2 on themorning line--will exit the 14 hole.Cont. p7

Loiselle also did a great job welcoming Senior VicePresident of Baseball Operations and General Managerfor the Toronto Blue Jays Alex Anthopolous, who wasselected as this year=s official draw master. A native ofMontreal (from Montreal and Greek, we MUST berelated), Anthopoulos reminisced about his earlyeducation with the Expos, his move to Florida after theMontreal franchise was sold, his return to Canada tojoin the Blue Jays, and in 2009, assuming the helm ofGM of the Toronto club. After starting at the verybottom and slowly working his way up the ladder withonly his passion for the game to fuel him, Anthopoulostruly is a shining example of the (North) Americandream. Having been to a few draws in my time, it wasinteresting to note that the Queen=s Plate ceremonyconsists of two draws; the first for the order in whichthe connections will draw and the second for the actualpost position. It definitely made things run a little longerthan I was used to, but Dan MC kept eveything rollingat a good clip. Trainer Mark Casse was kept busy withthe presence of three horses in the field: (7) Strike Oil(Forest Wildcat) (15-1); (10) Enduring Star (SirShackleton) (30-1); (15) Hippolytus (Philanthropist) (30-1). When asked why he chose the 10 hole for EnduringStar, the Woodbine-based trainer dead panned,ABecause it comes after nine.@ Casse definitely walksthe walk. In fact, the West Point runner will have thesole filly in the race, Inglorious (Hennessy), right nextdoor in the nine slot. Installed at 9-2 on the morningline, the winner of the June 5 Woodbine Oaks is one oftwo runners in the field for Donver Stable and trainerJosie Carroll, who won the 2006 Queen=s Plate withEdenwold. The other is maiden winner Seawatch(Woodman), who is 20-1 on the morning line. Favoredon the morning line is Check Your Soul (Perfect Soul{Ire}), who was a very impressive 3 1/4-length winneragainst fellow Ontario breds in the June 5 Plate Trial S.Listed at 3-1, the dark bay is campaigned by CharlesFipke and trained by Roger Attfield, the same team thatcampaigned 2008 winner Not Bourbon. The CanadianHall of Famer tried to sneak inconspicuously over to histable shortly after the start of the draw ceremonies, but, hey, the man has already won the CanadianClassic a record eight times (Norcliffe, 1976; MarketControl, 1987; With Approval, 1989; Izvestia, 1990;Alydeed, 1992; Peteski, 1993; Regal Discovery, 1995;Not Bourbon, 2008). Given those numbers, he can dowhatever he pleases. With the main show over, everyone=s attentionquickly turned to breakfast (more like brunch by thattime) and full-on socializing. The event was well hostedand enjoyed a great turnout, and if the preliminaries areanything to go by, Sunday should be a great show.

TOC HOLDS OPEN FORUM The ThoroughbredOwners of California will be holding open forumsSaturday and Sunday to offer horsemen andhorseplayers the opportunity to discuss current eventsand meet with TOC directors. The group has comeunder increasing fire from horseplayers in the wake ofmutuel takeout increases that went into effect inCalifornia Jan. 1, and faces competition from a rivalhorsemen=s group. AI know that we have nothing tohide,@ TOC director Billy Koch, told the Daily RacingForm=s Jay Hovdey. AWe believe in transparency. Peoplehave questions, they want answers, and we=ll givethem the best ones we have. Our business needs tolisten. For too long we rested on our laurels, becausewe were the only game in town. Obviously, the worldhas change, and we=re behind.@ In response to criticismof the TOC, the Thoroughbred Owners and BreedersAssociation released a statement of support for thegroup yesterday. ASince its formation in 1993, the TOChas performed exemplarily as the representative ofThoroughbred owners in California,@ the TOBAstatement read. AIt has been and remains the modelstructure for owners= representation at the state level. As the primary stakeholders in the sport, racehorseowners should demand an independent owners=organization and the TOC has provided the necessaryleadership on vital issues for its consitituency. TheBoard of Trustees of TOBA strongly endorses the TOCto remain in its current role as the representativehorsemen=s group in California.@ The TOC=s Saturdayforum will be held after the last race at Hollywood inthe track=s Sunset Room.
