Keynote Address: the Power & Potency of social Capital Al Condeluci, phD , Ceo of ClAss, faculty at university of pittsburgh’s school of Health & rehabilitation services and school of social Workin spite of our many years of work on an inclusive approach to working with people with disabilities, the outcomes in this area are still not satisfactory and many individuals with disabilities find themselves in isolated situations with limitedoptions for friendships and important social relationships. this presentation takes a close look at the reasons why our systems have not been more successful in these goals, and offers a community building perspective designed to shift the culture to be more inclusive and supportive to all people. Al Condeluci has been an advocate, a catalyst for building community capacities, and leader in understanding social culture since 1970. Al has emerged as a national leader and consultant on human services and community issues. He speaks annually to national and international audiences reaching some 15,000 people each year. Much of his work and passion focuses on how to address the high rate of social isolation among people with disabilities.

10:15 - 11:45 Am session i (Participants attend one workshop) A. What exactly is evidence-based Practice? finding evidence in our Daily Work to support our Work every Day tim feeney, phD, senior Director of research & Development, Belvedere Health services evidence-based practice is great, necessary and critical. But what constitutes “evidence”? the contexts in which we do our work are rarely constant, the people we work with are complicated, and we often don’t know exactly what is going on in the brains of the people we support. the goal of this presentation is to create a foundation to integrate available research into our clinical practice while using the data from our everyday work to establish an evidentiary basis to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the work we do.

Major medical considerations over the first days of a patient’s hospitalization will be reviewed, with emphasis on multidisciplinary team management and family involvement in medical decision making. transitions from inpatient to long-term rehabilitation will be discussed, with focus on scales used to communicate disorders of consciousness. the workshop will feature family members of former patients discussing their experiences with inpatient care and the roles that family can play to advocate for their loved ones with brain injury.

executive impairment is a common cognitive sequelae of mild tBi. frequently, individuals experience this as memory impairment, poor concentration and attention, and difficulty making decisions. Aside from impacting function and quality of life, this type of impairment often sets up a vicious cycle leading to psychiatric symptoms that worsen executive operations. this workshop will present a hypothesis based on the anatomy and physiology of working memory that can provide a framework for appropriate treatment.

Dizziness can result from an injury to the inner ear (peripheral), brain (central), or both. This workshop will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of both peripheral and central dizziness after a brain injury.

f. the role of race, Culture, and socioeconomic status in neuropsychological AssessmentJennifer Manly, phD, Associate professor, the taub institute, Columbia university Medical Centerthere is a rich history of empirical evidence demonstrating that race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status are fundamental causes of inequalities in health. However, research linking race, culture, and education to inequalities in neurological conditions is relatively recent. This presentation will address several methodological challenges to identification of mechanisms of racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in cognitive impairment.

h. integrative healing modalities After brain injurytracey sondik, psyD, licensed Clinical psychologist, Connecticut Valley HospitalBrain injury often leads to decreased quality of life, and conventional treatments alone are limited in terms of improving quality of life. There is growing research that patients with brain injury might benefit from complementary and integrative medicine. this workshop will provide an overview of the current research regarding brain injury and holistic practices, including mindfulness-based stress reduction, and breath-focused treatments, to experience first-hand how it can impact mind, body, and spirit.
