New P&C Executive Congratulations to the 2019 P&C executive who were elected at the AGM on Tuesday night namely: Tanveer Ahmed (President), Matt Stedman (Vice President) and Angela Bains (Secretary). The positions of second vice president and treasurer are yet to be filled.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the outgoing executive for their hard work, governance and faithful support of the school throughout 2018 namely Mrs Susan Maeng (treasurer) and Mrs Annabel Stafford (Secretary) and to everyone who supported the successful running of P&C happenings through various roles and sub-committees last year.

Thank you to all of our parents who through the parent survey have volunteered to support a school or P&C event this year. Parent leaders of these events will contact you in the coming weeks.

school and life. The NAPLAN tests are designed to help us make sure students are on track with their literacy and numeracy development. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Between 14 - 24 May 2019, our school will participate in the actual NAPLAN Online. Students do not need to be computer experts to take the NAPLAN test online. Making sure students have computer skills is part of our school curriculum, and our teachers will ensure your child is familiar with the online format. K-2 Lines It is pleasing to see the way our young ones have settled into the morning routines and are lining up each day ready for school. Lines assemblies are an important first step in transitioning to school each morning. To help this transition, families are asked to say their goodbyes and leave the children to socialise with classmates prior to the bell and lines assemblies.

With close to 300 students now in the infant’s department, the noise and congestion at bell times and during assemblies is distracting for the children and challenging for the teachers. Thank you for supporting the teachers in the management of this important transition period by leaving the assembly area by bell time.

Student Toilets During school times, parents and friends of the school are asked to use the staff toilets located on the ground floor of the admin block rather than student toilets.

Attendance This afternoon students who have been absent from school without a note from home explaining the absence will receive a proforma note. If you have already provided an explanation to the school, please let us know so that we can update our records.

Parent Volunteer Training Thank you to everyone who has already attended the parent volunteer training. The last face to face training for parent helpers this term on topics such as the role of the parent volunteer, how to teach reading, child protection, workplace health and safety, WWCC, communication with teachers and so on will be held on Wednesday 3

rd April from 8.30am. Please contact the

office to register your attendance.

Parent Concerns From time to time throughout the year, families may have concerns in relation to the behaviour of another student towards their children at the school. Parents are reminded that under no circumstances are parents to approach another student but please contact the school so that we can investigate what has taken place and address the issues in the best interests of all students. FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

Wilfrid Gordon Writing Class 2N have been working hard during writing with Ms Bojdak this term. They love when Ms Bojdak comes to the classroom and are very proud of the work they have on display. For this writing lesson, Ms Bojdak wanted 2N to write about what Wilfrid Gordon was thinking during the story. To do this, they first brainstormed synonyms for ‘thought’. Students then wrote, in first person, what Wilfrid Gordon was thinking. After that, they changed their first person thinking bubble into a third person sentence to describe what Wilfrid Gordon was thinking.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Digital Citizenship is a core unit of work within the curriculum area of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Across the school all teachers have been explicitly teaching Digital Citizenship which focuses on positive engagement with digital technology. The concept of digital citizenship is crucial to students' learning about technology- understanding the opportunities presented by the online world and how to minimise associated risks. The digital citizenship principles outline how to become a better digital citizen: 1. Know your online world: be curious, learn new things but be aware of the risks and how to protect yourself 2. Choose consciously and think before you act - the choices you make online can last forever 3. Engage positively: what you say and do online can affect everyone.

We are committed to informing and empowering our students with the knowledge of how to interact online appropriately and to provide each student with practical strategies to avoid engaging in negative behaviours. Online safety is a shared home-school responsibility and a valuable way you can be further informed is by accessing an interactive screen smart parent tour. This is specifically for parents of children 10-14 years of age and focuses on areas such as social media, screen time and cyber bullying, The website https://esafety.gov.au is a very practical tool and I commend it to you as a reliable source from the office of the eSafety Commissioner.

Parent session on Cyber Safety On Tuesday 2nd April Senior Constable Bottalico will be presenting age appropriate information to all students in years 3-6 and reminding them of their responsibility when using technology. On the same day at 2:35pm our police officers will be providing an opportunity for parents and carers to attend an information session. It is important we hear the strong message of the appropriate use of technology particularly in relation to the use of social media. We encourage all parents to take the opportunity to be correctly informed and actively involved in your child’s safety online. Leigh Russ Assistant Principal

PSSA SPORT

PSSA Basketball On Monday the 19th of March, Lewis and Joseph from 6N and Xavier from 5D went all the way to Sutherland to play Basketball for the Balmain PSSA team. The three boys were very excited in the days beforehand and were ecstatic to finally get to play. They all played to the best of their ability, unfortunately only winning one game out of five not making it to the finals. The three boys were all very thankful for the opportunity and for Joseph's parents providing transport to and from the venue. Lewis Walters

PSSA Girls Soccer trials After 2 weeks of cancelled trials due to stormy weather Lexi, Paris & Maggie finally got to try out yesterday for the Balmain zone soccer team. The girls had a great time and played very well. Lexi was selected for the zone team to play next Wednesday.

STUDENT WORK

The Arrival Depression and despair reigned over the clumped-up village. Morning light had shed past the horizon. The strong aroma of tea accompanied by the high-pitched whistle of a kettle gave a slight comfort to the man as he closed his suitcase. Her hand lovingly greeted his as their gaze shifted to one another’s. They both tried to smile. She entered the kitchen to mind the breakfast. A family portrait of a father, mother and daughter was enclosed in gift wrapping, stored in the front compartment of the father’s suitcase.

Who knows what it was? Either the light or noise - or maybe even both - had woken up the little one. She scrambled out of bed, scurrying through the path of the scent risen from tea and oatmeal. They were as busy as ants: hurrying to finish eating and get ready. The father’s gloomy-coloured coat and hat begged to be worn as they awaited his presence by the door.

Tears had formed in the mother’s eyes as they arrived at the busy train station. The innocence of the daughter was proven as she had not a clue of what was happening. Fumes and smoke from the steam of the

train ploughed towards them. The father had boarded the train, holding the mother’s hand. The train’s horn bellowed. Their grip loosened and parted. The train was off in a whoosh.

The mother and daughter trudged up the steep incline, heaving each step they took on their way back home. Sorrow seeped into their minds. Zacharie Popovic Kolicic

HARMONY DAY

‘Our diversity is our strength’

On Thursday 21 March, Drummoyne Public School was awash with orange as students and staff celebrated Harmony Day. It was an important day for our students as they remembered their own cultural heritage and showed respect for the heritage of others.

Almost 50 percent of the students at DPS identify as having a language background other than English. There are 41 different languages spoken by students and families at our school! Our diversity is our strength as we join together as one community to learn from and with each other.

Due to popular demand we are opening the Year 2 Choir to all Stage 1 students (all students in years 1 & 2). Our choir meets on Thursday mornings at 8.50am in the 1H classroom. Scholastic Book Club Issue #2 Brochures for Book Club Issue #2 were handed out this week. Spare copies are available outside the library’s internal door. The closing date for all orders is Thursday 28 March.

6S CATAPULT CREATIONS

In science class 6S has been learning about the different types of energy, ranging from potential energy, kinetic energy and so much more. But recently we have been focusing in on Elastic Potential Energy (EPE). To explore this Mr Sutton allowed us to find a way to build our own catapults. We each had to devise a plan to build a catapult (using elastics) and shoot a ball of newspaper, coated in paper-mache. We used a large range of material including wooden spoons, paints, hot glue guns and planks of wood. The main criteria included was that it had to transfer Elastic Potential Energy (EPE) into kinetic energy making this engineering project fit into our science topic perfectly, helping 6S students learn another type of potential energy. Teachers have been reinforcing the need for students to line up promptly and safely over the past two weeks. It is every student’s responsibility to stop playing when the music begins and walk to their class line to ‘be ready’ and to ‘be on time’ when the bell rings.

The Easter Hat Parade

The Easter Hat Parade will be held on Friday 12 April and students are requested to bring in chocolates. There will be no raffles this year but donations will be made to charities and the rest will be shared in class. Please bring in your donations by Tuesday 9 April. They will be collected by each class teacher.

Whooping Cough Keep coughing kids home and see your GP. Whooping cough (also called pertussis) began increasing across NSW towards the end of 2018, especially in children between the ages of 5 and 14 years. NSW Health anticipates that this increase will continue into 2019.

School-aged children who are infected with whooping cough usually experience a troubling cough that can persist for months, but they rarely get severe illness. However they can spread the infection to younger siblings and other more vulnerable people, who are at higher risk of severe disease. Whooping cough can be a life threatening infection in babies.

What can you do to prevent whooping cough?

Make sure vaccinations are up to date for all family members

Be alert for symptoms of whooping cough

Keep coughing kids home, to prevent them spreading the infection to others, and see your GP to get them tested for whooping cough

Lost Property As part of the year 6 leadership program two groups of students will be looking after lost property and returning items twice a week to students’ classrooms. They can only return your child’s hat, lunchbox, jumper etc. if it is clearly labelled with their full name.

P&C NEWS

Positions Vacant The P&C is seeking to fill two executive positions on the P&C namely Treasurer and Vice President. The positions involve:

Treasurer - Responsible for all funds in the DPS P&C Association (including any sub-committees), reporting on financial performance, complying with various laws and regulations and ensuring adequacy of internal controls.

Vice President - Support the President in his/her role to lead the P&C. Lead the monthly meetings, speak or attend school events in the President’s absence. Support the P&C’s fundraising and community building efforts.

Please note there will be no Sausage Sizzle happening at the election on Saturday but thank you to those who volunteered. The P&C are planning to hold a BBQ at the Federal Government election later in the year and will be seeking out volunteers.

Last Friday’s shooting of innocent people in two Christchurch mosques is an event that has shaken people to the core worldwide.

While we’d like to protect our children from such events, in reality it’s impossible, as the news coverage is so widespread and the event itself has impacted so many people. The personal nature of this particular tragedy makes it even harder to stomach than some recent natural disasters that have made the news, as awful as they have been.

So how do you approach this with your children? There is no easy answer, but be assured that your child will benefit from talking to you. These ideas may help:

Be availableLet your child or young person know that it is okay to talk about the events in Christchurch. Listen to what they think and feel. By listening, you can find out if they have misunderstandings, and you can learn more about the support that they need. You do not need to explain more than they are ready to hear, but be willing to answer their questions.

Filter the newsWhile we don’t advocate censorship, we do suggest that you take particular care about your child’s exposure to news events. The consistency of images can be frightening for young children who don’t understand the notion of distance and have difficulty distinguishing between reality and fiction. Older children and teenagers will probably be interested in the news events, but they probably need an adult available to answer their questions and reassure them.

Engage in the news with older childrenMany issues are now arising from this event that may be of significant interest to older primary-aged children and teenagers. Be prepared to engage in discussions about political leadership, gun laws, the coverage of the event itself by the media and other issues that will emerge. Increasingly, young people are demonstrating that they want to have a voice in shaping the world they live in. Give them a chance to air their concerns and formulate their ideas in the safe confines of home.

of life, confusion over how such an event could happen, and outrage over injustice. Take your cues from your children and follow the threads that emerge. Demonstrate that you understand how that they may be upset and clarify their emotions if possible: “It’s understandable to be angry when you hear news like this.”

Moderate your languageCurrently, we live in very divisive times. The fact that this shooting was carried out on one particular group demonstrates just the extent of the divisiveness of our community. Encourage kids to be inclusive, steering clear of valued-laden, extreme language such as ‘terrorists’, ‘evil’ and ‘horrors’ when describing the events and the alleged perpetrators. Not only does this type of language encourage children and young people to take a position rather than focus on the problems, it risks desensitising them to the reality of the impact of this event. The use of more sedate, yet descriptive language such as ‘gunman’, ‘awful’ and ‘tragedy’ can take remove the emotional sting, while demonstrating the enormity of the event’s impact.

Keep to a normal routineYour child may feel powerless. You may feel the same way as that’s what events like the Christchurch shooting does to us. Maintaining the same sleeping, eating and daily routines can help to restore a sense of control over our daily lives.

Show them how to change the worldArguably, these are the worst of times in terms of social divisiveness. Our children in many ways are letting us know that they don’t want to continue living this way. So how can they have an impact? Recently a timely clue came my way in the form of a notification from Facebook. Over the weekend, a parent shared an existing message to her Muslim friends as a message of hope. The quote reads:

“Don’t become too pre-occupied with your child’s academic ability, but instead teach them to sit with those sitting alone. Teach them to be kind. Teach them to offer help. Teach them to be a friend to the lonely. Teach them to encourage others. Teach them to think about other people. Teach them to share. Teach them to look for the good. This is how they will change the world.”

We get that power back when we start to impact the people around us in small ways, making positive changes for the better.

‘Kindness’, ‘helping others’, ‘encouraging’, ‘sharing’ and similar concepts don’t make great political slogans but they form the basis of every strong community- which is precisely what kids need.

3-6 Creative Composition Classes

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

As part of the Creative Arts curriculum, in term one, years 3 to 6 will be participating in a creative composition program by external provider Jellybeans Music. The focus is on meeting the curriculum requirements by covering musical concepts through engaging students in a building and developing their musical skills. Information on this year’s program can be found overleaf. The Jellybeans music teachers are specialists in their field and are able to compact the time for students to learn the music skills required allowing the class teachers more class time to devote to the teaching of literacy and numeracy and the other key learning areas. Research into the benefits of music education in schools highlights that students who study music:

show improved academic scores,

are more co-operative,

have higher levels of self-confidence

are more able to express their ideas

have improved motivation and engagement, persistence and self-discipline. In addition, a longitudinal study in the United States, ‘Champions of Change’ found that students who participate in regular music programs are far less likely to be involved with drugs, crime or have behavioural problems. Year 2 INTENSIVE SWIMMING Dear parents/caregivers,

An Intensive Swimming School for all students in Year 2 has been organised from Monday 1 April to Friday 12 April 2019 at Drummoyne Swim Centre.

The students will have a 45-minute lesson each swimming day with qualified swimming instructors with a ratio of

approximately 1:10. They will be accompanied by their class teachers and will walk to and from the pool. Cost, which includes swimming instruction, admission and lane hire for 10 days, is $70.

Students are only able to participate for the whole program – no partial payment is possible.

The children will need to bring a hat, towel, goggles and a bottle of water in a large sturdy bag and wear their swimmers

(including rash vests) under their school uniform. Please also pack dry underwear for your child to change into after

their lesson and a spare plastic bag for their wet costumes and towel. All items should be labelled with your child’s

name. Please ensure you have applied sunscreen before school.

Girls’ hair must be tied back while swimming or a swim cap worn. Children may wear sandals to the pool, however no

thongs are allowed. Please remember to have regular school shoes to change into once they are back at school. They

will change out of their swimmers at the pool in the change rooms.

Please complete the permission note below and return to the administration office no later than Monday 25 March 2019.

2019 Drummoyne Public School P & C Volunteer Form

Introduction Each year our parent community plays a vital role in supporting Drummoyne Public School. We are very fortunate to be part of such a great community! The richness of school life that the children enjoy is due to the ongoing support of parents, grandparents and friends of the school.

One important avenue of support is through P&C organised activities. As a result of these activities, last year over $172,000 was given to the school through various projects.

The purpose of this flyer is to ask all families to support the organisation of one P&C activity this year. Our hope is that all families will ‘play a part’ in enriching the lives and learning of our children through volunteering for just one activity.
