30-YEAR HONOREE REFLECTIONS

All 30-45-year honorees were given the opportunity to respond to one or both of the following questions:

What do you value most about Salisbury University? What is your most notable memory thus far from your career at Salisbury University?

Vicky Adeniran, Program Administrative Specialist, University Dining Services

“I value the diversity and inclusion of students, faculty and staff in planning and decision-making processes like the strategic planning. I was instrumental in the automation of the time and attendance system and training other departments to use the same system. I am proud to see that this system is used campus-wide. I have also enjoyed volunteering for various events on campus such as Sea Gull Century, convocation ceremonies and SUSRC.”

Lola Andrews, Food Service Aide I, University Dining Services

“I enjoy the people. I like the way they treat me. The job makes me strong. I like dealing with all of the people I interact with. I enjoy what I do.”

Paul Clements, Engineering Technician II, Henson School of Science and Technology

“I tried to Google a good spiel to plagiarize for this spot, but nothing quite fit. What I value about SU is all the important things to note you’d find on Google for this occasion: learning so much from those I’ve been privileged to work with, my friends here, being in awe at how hard people work here, and how good they are.

In many places, people take pride in craftsmanship, advancing technology, creating art, discovery and launching ambitious endeavors. Most often, before they do that, they stop at a university to prepare. Being even a minor part in the mission to launch them out into the future is like being a part of the Apollo mission to the moon, only better and more important.”

Dr. Elizabeth Curtin, Associate Professor, English

“What I value about Salisbury University is the collaborative spirit among faculty to do the best for our students. As long as faculty continue to value the close relationships among colleagues and among students and faculty, this place will be a great place to work. Students know that they can come to us, and faculty across the board recognize that time spent with the students is the most crucial aspect of our community.”

Dr. Memo Diriker, Associate Professor, Management & Marketing/Director, BEACON

“As part of my job at BEACON, I get the opportunity to visit many universities here in the U.S. as well as overseas. It is a very rare institution of higher learning that has this university’s commitment to being a part of the community. Think of all the students taking part in service learning assignments and fundraising activities for local nonprofits. Think of all the faculty members doing community-based research, volunteering and serving on local boards. Think of faculty, staff and students welcoming the general public to our civic engagement, arts, culture and athletics offerings. Salisbury University is a valued and key community partner throughout our region. I am always filled with great pride when I tell folks I work at SU. I always add that I am a Gull! I cannot imagine the Eastern Shore of Maryland without the wonderful and beneficial presence of this university. I hope that, through my work at BEACON over these past 30 years, I have been able to add to the great body of work done by my peers and colleagues. It is also nice to be able to say that I respect each and every one of them. I also like almost all of them. Almost … “

Tammy Harris, Business Operations Specialist, Fulton Dean’s Office

“My 30 years at Salisbury University means to me that I have found somewhere I like, and that likes me too.”

Dr. Kathleen Shannon, Professor, Math & Computer Science

“What I value: SU is a community that puts students first. We have avoided schemes that pit people against one another and reward me-first mentalities. Many university evaluation systems have folks squabbling over pennies; not ours. I sincerely hope that we can resist the ever-present pressure to change that.

Strongest memories: The opportunity to work with so many outstanding students and colleagues – some of the students are now colleagues, here and elsewhere, some are in grad programs, others working or still here as students. The best productions of Pirates of Penzance and Hamlet I’ve ever seen and countless wonderful music, theatre and dance productions.”

Dr. Kenneth Smith, Accounting & Legal Studies

“I value our beautiful campus and my friends and colleagues. There are just too many memories to narrow it down to one.”

Dr. Linda Cockey, Professor, Music

“Sharing with students and colleagues our dream of what music might become.”

Gerry DiBartolo, Director, Athletics and Campus Recreation

“The thing I value the most about this institution is the wonderful people who teach, work and/or study at SU. While the campus landscape has been completely transformed, the people continue to be genuine, caring, kind and have the attitude that no matter what it takes we will get it done and will do it to the best of our ability. Despite receiving some of the lowest funding from the University System of Maryland, we continue to provide and exceptional product/experience. There is only one reason this campus continues to receive accolades and honors and that is due to the tireless effort of those individuals associated with our campus. I am very proud to be a 40+ year member of this campus. Well done SU!”

Vaughn White, Director, Multicultural Student Services

“My most positive memories of my career at Salisbury University have been the excitement and sense of belonging that new freshman participants and their parents exhibited at the annual Powerful Connection program sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Student Services.”

45-YEAR HONOREE REFLECTIONS

Gail Larmore, Office Supervisor III, Admissions

“What I value most about SU is all the wonderful people who are SU – People who truly care! SU is a prideful community made up of some of the most dedicated staff, faculty and students that anyone could ever hope to be associated with. I feel fortunate to have been part of such a community.”

Dr. David Parker, Professor, Math & Computer Science

“I’ll long remember working with other faculty to help to create the Faculty Senate, giving the faculty a clear voice in shared governance at SU. I’ll remember representing the faculty on the Senate for almost two decades and representing both the SU faculty and SU itself on the Council of University System Faculty, also for almost two decades. The most important successes by both groups were improvements in faculty benefits and rights, in particular regarding full-time contractual faculty.

My most lasting memories will be how friendly everyone has been – students, faculty, staff and administrators, as well as the professionalism of faculty, staff and administrative colleagues. I look forward to coming in each day and interacting with everyone. That’s what I will miss most when I retire!”
