Friday, May 1 2020

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to our 3rd edition of Marnebek’s Weekly Update. This week we held our SSG conferences re-

motely, another first of many new things we have had to do this term. We understand that this is a diffi-

cult time for everyone in our school community and you may have had many questions. We are here to

support all our students and families, and our Allied Health team , speech pathologists, occupational ther-

apist, social worker and psychologist are able to assist you if required. Your child’s class teacher will be

able to assist in linking you with our Allied Health team.

Please know that teachers have all the same feeling in not being able to sit side by side with your children,

teaching in the classroom, using all of their professional skill set. It is hard and we know you are doing

your best to support your children and for many of you while you also work from home.

The feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive and families are appreciating the time our

staff are taking to make sure their child's educational needs are met.

Thank you for your continued support. We will continue to support you.

Kind regards,

Jennifer Hamilton

VIRTUAL CLASSROOMS @ MARNEBEK

Although our school corridors are quieter, Junior School online corridors are busy with lots of hustle and bustle. All the teachers have upskilled themselves in the technology, which we are using. Seesaw is the place to be. Students have been doing amazing work in their homes on Seesaw. Here are a few examples for you to look at. Teachers have been using the green screens, creating videos to interact with students. Educations Support is also doing their bit by liking and commenting on student’s work. They are also leaving personalized voice comments on student’s work.

FOOD TECH @ HOME

Students have enjoyed following a range of recipes set out by their teacher including freshly squeezed orange juice, tuna pasta bake and pesto pasta! We may be stuck at home, but that does not mean learning and having fun has to stop. Here are some examples of delicious foods prepared by Marnebek students. A few words from the teacher………

“I just wanted to write a quick note on something that has amazed me. They say life is for learning and that we should all try to learn one thing new everyday. Throughout my career I have always tried to engage parents, letting them know that education is effective only when we are all invested and barri-ers are broken down realising "we are all on the same side". I think it's poignant that at a time when many Australians thank Service personnel, and more recently our health workers who are helping us get through our own difficult period in history, that another group has surfaced who are in need of praise, and have displayed many characteristics that make this coun-try what it is. I have been blown away by how our students have coped in this challenging times, the home learning teams of parents, guardians, siblings, etc. have produced some of the most amazing work that I have seen in over 20 years of teach-ing! You should all be immensely proud of what you have achieved, please save the work and look at it again in 10-20 years and relive the fabulous job you did in this extremely challenging time! Heartfelt thank you” - Gerry Burns, Food Technology Teacher

MIDDLE SCHOOL REPORT

First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU to the families and carers for your patience while we all navigate this new remote learning space.

Middle school teachers have done an amazing job in preparing for this time. Preparation started towards the end of term 1, with teachers working hard to prepare learning packs for students to take home. Teachers have also been working to make sure that all students have work every day on Seesaw as well as making regular phone calls to parents and carers.

Whilst the teachers are providing the learning component as an option for families and carers to assist keep students engaged, it has also been great to hear about the many other activities students have been involved in, such as cooking at home, regular bike rides and walks which is equally important during these times.

It has been absolutely amazing to see all the photos that are being uploaded to Seesaw of the students completing tasks, hav-ing fun at home and partaking in key events such as recognising ANZAC Day. Keep them coming, we love to see them!!!

Once again, we will work through this together. If you have any questions or need further guidance please call the school on 5996 3858.

Important information

Take Home Packs

Any parents requiring take home packs of student work should get in contact with their classroom teacher. These packs can either compliment the students online learning, or replace the online component for students who cannot engage with tech-nology. The teacher will provide appropriately levelled work to support their home learning and engagement. Families will be notified by the classroom teacher once the packs are ready for collection from the school.

We are offering parent pickups next Wednesday, 6 May, Thursday, 7 May and Friday, 8 May between 9:30-10:30am & 1:30pm-2:30pm from the Multipurpose Room at the New Holland Drive Campus.

Communication Channels

As our school continues to promote digital learning, we will continue to increase the functionality of Compass across our

school. We have also made important documents such as SSG minutes available online through the Chronicle section.

Please direct any questions about Compass to your child’s classroom teacher, or the school email address. We will continue

to keep you informed of the increased benefits of utilising Compass as we work through them together as a school.

Accessing Compass: you can use the Compass School Manager app available for iOS or Android on your mobile phone. To ac-

cess the Parent Portal, go to the following link: marnebek-vic.compass.education

TIPS FOR PARENT WELLBEING During this period of remote learning, we’re determined to ensure families still feel the support of our amazing school commu-nity. Here are some tips for parents to maintain their wellbeing:

LOOK AFTER YOURSELF - Prioritising self-care will keep your stress level under control, which also helps to reduce your child’s stress levels. It’s win-win!

REDUCE YOUR EXPECTATIONS Having your child at home will affect your regular productivity levels – expect to get less done. You may also need to manage your expectations of what your child can handle right now.

FIND A ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR YOU Remote learning won’t look like school and that’s okay, but creating structure in the day is important.

PRIORITISE CONNECTIONS Fostering the connection with your child reassures them that they are safe and loved. It’s as easy as spending a few moments in the day engaging in an activity they are passionate about.

Make sure you have some fun too!
