Here was a fun slam we had in the Wednesday knock-out atthe regional. It is sort of a trump coup, but a typical trump coupinvolves a high trump that iyou cannot finesse. Here we will seesome little trumps to coup away.

1: Good hand, usually a limit raise or better in hearts, but maysometimes be just a strong game forcing hand

2: A stall, since South still does not know where the hand isgoing

3: Roman Keycard Blackwood for hearts, 1430 responses 4: 1 or 4 keycards 5: Ask for the ♥Q 6: No ♥Q7: If we’ve got six footnotes why not have a seventh?

If I had been able to show the ♥Q then I would do so bybidding 5♠, which would show the ♠K as well. Now partnercould visualize 13 tricks, because he can see a club pitch com-ing on the spade. However, in a team game, do not bid a grandslam if you are off the queen of trumps.

The play is the interesting part though. In fact, just ignorethe bidding if you don't like it, and play the hand in 6♥ by South.

West leads the ♣K.You win the ♣A, then play a heart towards the ace. If both

opponents follow suit in trumps, you can virtually claim 12tricks because you can discard the club in dummy on the ♠K.But to do that, you need to use that diamond queen as an entryto your hand. All of this is no problem as long as trumps are noworse than 3-1.

However, it turns out that West discards a spade when youlead towards dummy at trick two. So East has all four trumps, the Q872. Your fear is that when East wins the ♥Q, they canforce dummy to ruff a club. This will leave dummy with onefewer trump than East holds. You can then get your pitch of theclub in dummy and try to draw trumps, but you will have no re-entry to the long diamonds.

The answer is simple. But you absolutely need to think thisthrough, to visualize what happens, and why it works. So win

the club at trick one. Play a trump to the ace, then cash the ♠A,and return to hand with the ♦Q. Cash the ♠K, and pitch the clubin dummy.

Here are your hands at this point. The lead is in the South.

If you try to draw those trumps while ending in the dummy,East can force you to ruff a club when she gets in with her queen. This is the position that you feared, but you had no real choicein the play.

Have no fear however, as this is the position you saw earlyin the hand, now come to life. Just lead a trump to the 10 indummy. Suppose that East wins the queen, and then returns aclub to force a ruff in dummy. You ruff with the 3 spot. Then juststart to play diamonds.

Those diamonds are all good now. What can east do? Sheremains with two trumps, the 87, but if she ever ruffs, you willoverruff. You also have two trumps, the J9. So if she ruffs, thenyou overruff, and play your last trump to dummy. That will drawher remaining trump, and you have only good diamonds left indummy.

Now, think about what happens if earlier, East ducks theheart when you played to the 10 before. This would leave herwith Q8. You start playing diamonds with the K3 remaining indummy. If East ever ruffs a diamond, then she can do no morethan to get her one trump trick, but that is the end for her again.

No matter what East does, you will spirit those long trumpsaway in her hand. It is a trump coup, but not the classical trumpcoup you see in the books. It is a trump coup you can visualizeas soon as you see the poor trump split.

As it turns out, this hand is probably crucial. You gain 17IMPs on the board, since they went down in the heart grandslam. They went to 7♥, which never had a chance to make, because they never bothered to find out about the missing trumpqueen. If you essentially push the board, that might let themsneak past you in the knock-out.

Opening lead: ♥Q

You are declarer on the above auction in yesterday’s SwissTeams. There is nothing unreasonable in the action at the tablebut you have to play the hand correctly as you are in a teamevent and misplaying this hand may cost the match.

It appears that you have three club losers. (West did doublefor takeout and should have some values in clubs.)

You win the opening lead with dummy’s ♥A. The ques-tion is how to play trump. On the auction, West may have a sin-gleotn spade. Other days West will have two spades.

Take a minute to decide how you would play the trump suit

before reading on. (Yes you can guess that East should have the♠Q because West’s takeout double implies spade shortness butcan you come up with a play whihc guarantees the contractagainst any lay of the cards. Afterall, our opponents don’talways make perfect takeout doubles and West may have the♠Q.

This is a trick question as declarer’s best play is to delaydrawing trump. Look what happens when declarer goes abouttaking a few tricks and ruffing a few others.

Start by playing a diamond to the ♦A and ruffing a dia-mond in dummy. Now cash the ♥K and ruff a heart. Follow byruffing a diamond in dummy and another heart in hand. Younow have seven tricks.

Dummy has the ♠AJ and you have the ♠K108. Exit a cluband wait patiently for your three spade tricks. This brings yourtrick total to 10 and your contract is safely home.
