The Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes (gr. I) is flush with new challengers that weren’t in the field for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr.

    I)—eight, to be precise.

History, however, suggests they face a tough task.

In the past 50 years, only seven of the Preakness

winners didn’t start in the Derby.

Three of those seven happened this century:

champion filly Rachel Alexandra in 2009 (who won

the Kentucky Oaks [gr. I]), Bernardini in 2006, and

    Red Bullet in 2000.

Three of the other four came within four years

of each other: Codex in 1980, Aloma’s Ruler in 1982,

and Deputed Testamony in 1983. The other was

    Bee Bee Bee in 1972.

Twenty-one Derby winners left Pimlico Race

Course with a Triple Crown still possible; only four

(Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Ameri-

can Pharoah) went on to complete U.S. racing’s

Holy Grail. There were also 22 Preakness winners

among the beaten at Churchill Downs.

There’s likely to be a number of reasons so

few non-Derby runners have won the Preakness,

despite many getting a longer than the two-week

break that Derby horses have to face. But one sig-

    nificant factor is probably class.

Of the eight 2016 Preakness runners that didn’t

run in the Derby, six ran in at least one Derby prep

race carrying qualifying points, with the intention

of earning their way into the field, and didn’t make

    it.

Four of them—Cherry Wine, Fellowship, La-

oban, and Uncle Lino—made strong pushes to

get into the Derby field, contesting at least one

170-point race and one 85-point race. All finished

at least third in one of those but were unable to

    earn enough points to qualify.

The other two effectively abandoned the Der-

by pursuit a little earlier. Awesome Speed didn’t

contest a Derby prep after finishing fourth to Mo-

haymen in the Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth

Stakes (gr. II), and while Collected ran in three

races with Derby points, all carried just 10 for a

win. Collected’s Derby campaign effectively ended

when he finished fourth in the Southwest Stakes

    (gr. III) Feb. 15.

The Derby points system has only operated

since 2012, but prior to that date horses still

had criteria to get into the race. In those years

many of the non-Derby starters in the Preak-

ness didn’t miss the Churchill classic by choice,

but because they hadn’t earned the right to be

    there.

The two Preakness entries that didn’t run in

Derby preps are Abiding Star, who comes into

the race on a five-race win streak, and Stradi-

vari, who won his past two.

    Derby winner Nyquist, second-placed Ex-

aggerator, and ninth-placed Lani are the only

Derby contenders running back in the Preak-

    ness. BH

Land Over Sea and Go Maggie Go will make quick turnarounds off positive runs in the Longines Ken-tucky Oaks (gr. I) to try another Friday feature in the

$250,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) May 20 at

    Pimlico Race Course.

While Reddam Racing's Land Over Sea avoided

    another clash with undefeated Songbird—she's

finished behind the 2015 champion 2-year-old filly

on five occasions—in the May 6 Oaks, she ran into

another star in Oaks winner Cathryn Sophia.

Go Maggie Go, a Mike Tarp homebred, had a

troubled Oaks trip, which resulted in her first loss in

three starts. The Ghostzapper filly entered the Oaks

off a 2 1/4-length score in the Gulfstream Park Oaks

    (gr. II), her stakes debut.

Dothraki Queen is the other graded winner in the

14-filly field, but that victory came five starts back

when she won the Pocahontas Stakes (gr. II) last Sep-

    tember at Churchill Downs.

SMOOTH TRAINING FOR DERBY WINNERBy Blood-Horse Staff

Another day, another solid morning session from Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Nyquist.

With just a two-week gap between races leading

up to the May 21 Xpressbet.com Preakness Stakes

(gr. I), trainer Doug O'Neill has Reddam Racing's un-

defeated champion on cruise control—and the Uncle

Mo colt has been his usual easy-going self at Pimlico

Race Course since arriving two days after the Derby.

Nyquist's strong final pre-race gallop May 19 un-

der exercise rider Jonny Garcia pleased O'Neill. The

champion 2-year-old of 2015 went out to the track

around 8:30 a.m. EDT, accompanied by assistant

trainer Jack Sisterson on lead pony Satire. He avoided

the trouble of a loose horse that was soon appre-

    hended by an outrider.

    "We're very happy," the

    trainer said. "Nyquist had

    great energy and looked real

    loose, and he galloped real-

ly well. So we're very, very

    happy the way the morning

    went. Tomorrow's going to be

    a very easy morning. We're

    feeling very optimistic about

    Saturday. He was pretty good

    before the Derby, and he's

    pretty good now. We had

    five weeks to prepare from

    the (Xpressbet.com) Florida

Derby (gr. I) to the Kentucky

Derby; now it's a quick turn-

    around, but he's showing all

signs that he's good as ever."

    Jockey Mario Gutierrez

was on hand to watch his

    second Derby winner train

    Thursday morning. Gutierrez

    came to the 2012 Preakness

    after winning that year's Der-

by with I'll Have Another and

took the second jewel of the

    Triple Crown before I'll Have

    Another was declared from

    the Belmont Stakes (gr. I).

    "I'm very, very optimis-

tic," he said of his chances.

"Watching him gallop today, it's hard not to get

confident. We're going into the race with a lot of

confidence. I have nothing but great memories from

Baltimore and the Preakness in 2012. Being able to

come back with the kind of horse that I'm coming

back with, it's a lot of joy. I'm coming here with a

heavy favorite, and that makes me really happy."

Asked what it feels like to ride Nyquist, Gutierrez

said, "I could stay here all day to try to describe the

feeling when I'm on his back. It's a good feeling. You

know what you have under your hands is a powerful

animal that's just waiting for you to let go, and you

know they're going to keep running. Besides that, he

loves to race. He loves the competition."

The last four horses expected for the Preak-

ness—Abiding Star, Awesome Speed, Lani, and

Stradivari—arrived at Pimlico May 19 and settled

    into their stalls. BH

DERBY WINNERS DOMINATE PREAKNESSBy Frank Angst

One would expect a Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner returning in what should still be top form two weeks after that initial classic score

would typically win a race of similar conditions.

Good news for those of us who

view horse racing as sport and not a

    fun random event generator: Those

Derby winners typically do win the

Preakness Stakes (gr. I). In the past 20

editions of the Preakness, 10 Derby

    winners walked into the Preakness

winner's circle after the Pimlico Race

    Course classic.

Throw out the two years in that

stretch where injury affected the Der-

    by winners—Grindstone didn't start

in the 1996 Preakness and Barbaro

didn't finish in 2006—and the success

rate of Derby winners in the Preak-

    ness improves to 56%.

In short, the Derby winner is very likely to

    win the Preakness.

Of the eight Derby winners not affected by

injury who came up short in the Preakness in

the past 20 years, Fusaichi Pegasus' loss to Red

Bullet ranks as the most surprising. Fusaichi

    Pegasus finished second at

    odds of 1-5, 3 3/4 lengths

    back.

    Without going too far out

on a limb, it's safe to say that

in two recent years the best

    3-year-old showed them-

    selves in the Preakness after

coming up short in the Derby:

Afleet Alex in 2005 and Point

Given in 2001. Both won the

    Preakness as favorites and

went on to add the Belmont

    Stakes (gr. I).

PEGASUS WORLD CUP SPOTS ALREADY BOUGHTBy Tom LaMarra

Organizers of the $12 million Pegasus World Cup planned for January 2017 say they already have 12 ownership groups on board at $1 million each.

The announcement was made May 19 at Pimlico

Race Course, which will host the Xpressbet.com Preak-

ness Stakes (gr. I) May 21. The Stronach Group owns

and operates the Maryland Jockey Club tracks and is

the driving force behind the Pegasus World Cup.

According to Starlight Racing's Jack Wolf, who

serves as chief executive officer of the Pegasus World

Cup, the period for owners to commit to the race

opened May 16 and all the spots were filled in about a

    day.

Those who purchased a spot in the starting gate

for the 1 1/8-mile race at Gulfstream Park Jan. 28 are

California Chrome LLC; Coolmore; Jerry and Ronald

    Frankel; Sol Kumin and James Covello; Jim McIngvale;

Paul Reddam; Reeves Thoroughbred Racing; Ruis

Racing; Daniel Schafer; Starlight Pegasus Partners; The

Stronach Group; and Jeff Weiss of Rosedown Racing

    Stables.

The Stronach Group intended to purchase three

spots in the starting gate if there hadn’t been sufficient

    interest, but it wasn't necessary.

The race will be restricted to 12 horses. Owners

with a spot in the gate can race, lease, contract, share

a starter, or sell their place in the starting gate. Origi-

nal entrants will have the first option to participate in

    future Pegasus World Cup races.

Owners will share equally in 100% of the Pegasus

World Cup’s net income from pari-mutuel handle, me-

dia rights, and sponsorships. As for the purse, which

would be the largest in the world, the winner would

get $7 million, with $1.75 million for second, $1 million

for third, and $250,000 for the fourth- through last-

    place finishers.

"The Stronach Group wants racing to be on the

cutting edge," said Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer for

the company. "We're getting calls, even international-

ly, about the series. There are some high-end groups

    interested in it."

Belinda Stronach, chairman and president of The

Stronach Group, called the new race a "game-chang-

er" and part of the company's goal to "modernize the

sport and generate a new group of fans."

When asked if beyond next year the race would

be held at Santa Anita Park, another Stronach Group

track, officials said they're just focused on 2017.

"As a progressive company we always look at our

options," Ritvo said. "We're looking at making this

(first) one a success and doing it as a high-end event."

"We're totally open to looking at other venues,"

Stronach said. "Perhaps in the state of Maryland we

could look at doing something similar."

Ritvo said The Stronach Group intends to pursue

national television coverage of the Pegasus World Cup.

"We're already negotiating with networks behind

    the scenes," he said. BH

    SALES UPDATE

FASTEST QUARTER-MILE TIMES SAVED FOR LASTBy Ron Mitchell

The quickest quarter-mile breezes during the three-day under tack show for next week's

    Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-year-

olds in training sale were saved

for the last day, May 19.

Two fillies, one by Uncle Mo

and the other by Into Mischief,

breezed the distance in :21 2/5,

    improving the previous two-

days' best time of :21 3/5.

    Consigned by Pike Racing as

Hip 490, the Uncle Mo filly is a

    half to grade II-placed Lassoft-

    hemohicans out of an unraced

Tale of the Cat half sister to

    three stakes winners, including

    two-time champion sprinter Housebuster. Bred

in Kentucky by Tom VanMeter, Gaines-Gentry

Thoroughbreds, and Fox Strauss, the filly was a

Keeneland September buy-back on a final bid of

$80,000. Consignor Al Pike eventually bought her

    privately for client Danny Saloom.

"We thought all winter she had the makings to

be a star," Pike said. "You can't tell from watching

her how fast she is going because she does it so

easily. She is just a special filly"

The Into Mischief filly, bred in Florida by

Murray Stroud, is consigned by de Meric Sales as

Hip 527. The half sister to Panamanian champion

Normandia was acquired for $110,000 earlier this

year from the Fasig-Tipton March 2-year-olds in

    training sale at Gulfstream Park.

"The way she prepped and came into the work

we were not surprised by the time," Tristan de

Meric said. "She's a nice filly."

Also during the Wednesday session, three

    2-year-olds—Hips 461, 568, and 592—equaled

the under tack show's fastest eighth-mile time of

:10, recorded by three other 2-year-olds on the

    first two days.

Hip 461, a Friesan Fire colt from Scanlon Train-

ing and Sales, is out of the stakes-winning Crafty

Prospector mare Crafty Toast. Bred in Pennsyl-

vania by Hope Hill Farm, he was purchased for

$35,000 from Bill Reightler's consignment at last

    year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling sale.

Consigned by Justin Casse's Casse Sales, Hip

568 is Mistress Ofthedark, a First Samurai filly

from a solid female family that includes grade I

winner Folk Art and the stallion Sportin' Life. She

was bred in Kentucky by Sun Valley Farm and

was an $87,000 purchase from Dynasty Thor-

oughbreds at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July

    yearling sale.

Hip 592 is a More Than Ready filly bred in

West Virginia by James Miller and purchased by

her consignor, Grassroots Training and Sales, for

$25,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October

    yearling sale.

The sale in Timonium, Md., will be held May

23-24, with sessions beginning at 10 a.m. EDT

    daily. BH

Van Berg, S.C., brought all six juveniles from the

2014 crop of Wicked Rich to the sale with the in-

tent of finding them new homes, and eventually

proving the stallion should be given an opportu-

    nity at an established farm.

“I am just trying to prove this stallion and

prove that I am right about him,” Carter said. “I

want people to see the quality of the juveniles

my stallion produces. Obviously, I want to make

some money … they are going to be priced re-

spectably but reasonably. I just want to get them

    to the races.”

During the under tack show, the Wicked Rich

offspring flashed speed, with one, Hip 85, posting

    the co-fastest quarter-mile breeze of :21 3/5 dur-

ing the May 17 session. The filly is the first foal

from the Hold That Tiger mare, Mom's Honor.

From 10 foals in his first crop, Wicked Rich has

two winners from four starters, according to The

    Jockey Club Information Systems.

Carter bought Wicked Rich for Carolyn Vogel’s

Crossed Sabres Farm for $120,000 at the 2007

Keeneland September yearling sale. He was a

    $150,000 buy-back at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Mid-

lantic sale and eventually won two of nine starts.

Initial efforts to stand the horse at stud failed,

and Vogel let Carter have the horse to breed to

    his own mares.

Carter has represented Vogel and prepared

the Crossed Sabres yearlings for racing since

2006. Among the horses he has selected for Vo-

gel have been millionaires Lochte and Valid.

“My whole thing is to train horses to go to the

races,” said Carter, who was a successful Quarter

Horse rider and an exercise rider for the late Hall

of Fame trainers Mack Miller and Woody Ste-

phens. “I am just trying to prove this stallion and

prove that I am right about him. He’s got a head

    full of sense.”

According to Carter, the Wicked Rich foals are

much like their sire—quick, with an abundance of

    stamina.

“He could go a quarter in :21 and change and

stretch it out to a mile or a mile and a sixteenth,”

Carter said. “His horses all have a lot of speed

and I think they are going to be durable.”

By the time the Carter horses reached the

Midlantic sale, they had breezed a half-dozen

times and galloped 1 1/2 miles five days a week.

“They have a ton of mileage on them,” Carter

    said. BH

IMAGES OF THE 1966 PREAKNESSBy Evan Hammonds

Fifty years ago Kauai King became the first—and only—Maryland-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. Mike Ford's son of Native Dancer followed that up

with a 1 3/4-length score in the Preakness Stakes (gr.

This week Blood-Horse Daily will run a series of

photographer E. Martin Jesse's images from Preak-

ness week and Preakness day 1966, found in the

photo archives of Blood-Horse. They portray a Pimli-

    MARYLAND REVIVALBy Eric Mitchell

Mike Pons and his brother Josh run Country Life Farm, which has been in the family since 1933, and the Merryland Farm breaking and training

center that was acquired in 2001. Having kept the

farm running through some bleak years in Mary-

land, Mike Pons talks with MarketWatch editor Eric

Mitchell about the astounding changes he's seeing

as the state revives its racing and breeding indus-

    tries.

    MarketWatch: Clearly what's driving the

growth has been the five casinos that have

opened since 2010. What are the growth pros-

pects for gaming and how will it further impact

    breeding and racing?

Mike Pons: The 7% of the total slot play,

with the 80:20 split (Thoroughbred: harness), is

currently a $35 million to $40 million subsidy to

the purse and Maryland-bred accounts. The last

casino, the MGM National Harbor Casino, which

is three miles from Washington, D.C., will open

in November or December of this year, and the

projection is that the revenue will double.

MW: How dramatic has the revival been in

Maryland and where do you see it the most?

MP: One of the most fun things to watch is

what The Stronach Group has put into Laurel

and Pimlico, mostly Laurel. It has been dumb-

founding and beautiful to watch them back up

    their investment.

They also just bought Rosecroft, which

doesn't seem to be that much but it was his-

torically the largest of the OTBs and there was

always problems and litigation, and now that

will all be put to bed. Add Timonium's OTB and

you have a bunch of really interesting things

happening just in the last 18 to 24 months. It

has been great to see Maryland regain its stride.

Racing is the engine that drives everything else.

MW: How has the revival affected business at

    Country Life and Merryland?

MP: The growth has reenergized the breed-

ers who are here. We have seen the addition of

20-25 new stallions. What we are still missing

are the mare owners, which we are addressing

    with broodmare partnerships. Otherwise, we

are seeing more mares coming in from longer

distances to take advantage of the Maryland

    program.

In 2001 we bought the old Merryland training

center with the vision of handling everything

from conception to birth to training to racing

and back again. Here we are 15 years later and

it is finally starting to come to fruition. And it is

not just because of random decisions; it's been

thoughtful planning. We now have a 10-year

deal between the horsemen, the tracks, and the

breeders that has put all the differences behind

us. Now that we're all rowing together, we could

    pull a water skier. BH
