By COZET JONESSpecial to The Leader

"You Can't Take It With You" tells about crazy meet-ing between a conservative family and the eccentric household of Grandpa Mar-tin Vanderhof (played by Richard Williamson).

Grandpa's family of unique individualists amus-es with their silly physical antics and inspire with their wholehearted pursuit of happiness. Grandpa has a wonderful outlook on life despite the desperate state that the country’s economy is in. Grandpa’s life phi-losophy is a great one for all of us as our country is going through many similar things that happened during the Great Depression.

The stage is lled with great one-liners. The play is not one of those deep plays with hidden meanings to discover and ponder but a light-hearted way to escape today’s busy world.

"You Can't Take it With You" takes place in the liv-ing room of Grandpa Martin Vanderhof's home in New York City. The action begins on a Wednesday evening in 1936. "Grandpa" Martin Vanderhof (Richard Wil-

liamson) was once part of the competitive business world. However, one day he realized he was unhappy. So, he stopped working. Since that time, he spends his days catching and rais-ing snakes, watching gradu-ation ceremonies, visiting old friends, and doing what-ever else he wants to do.

This play seems as if it were written right for today. The audience will be able to relate to Grandpa’s world. Yet despite the times Grand-pa believes that really living and being happy is impor-tant. He reminds us that “you can’t take it with you.” Grandpa believes that you must do what makes you happy.

So following Grandpa’s philosophy, his grand-daughter Essie (Christie Caldwell) enjoys a life mak-ing candy and ballet danc-ing. Caldwell is delightful on stage as she attempts to be a ballerina. It is clear that Essie will never get paid for her dancing skills. Her Russian dance instruc-tor, Kolenkoff (Jerry Dunn) privately tells Grandpa that Essie stinks at ballet. But Grandpa just chuckles and says as long as she is having fun that is what matters. Es-sie’s husband, Ed, (Brandon

Meeks) plays the xylophone and runs a small printing press. This is Meeks’ stage debut. Meeks is a senior at Brighton High School. He has a lot of talent and will surely gain a following if he keeps performing.

The only sane member of grandpa’s family is Alice. She is quite normal despite the family. Alice is portrayed by Kaitlin Johns. Kaitlin is also a senior at Brigh-ton High. She has been on stage for several other performances, and again she does an outstanding job as the sweet adorable Alice. Her talent is matched with her counter part Tony Kirby (Cody Whitehorn). Whitehorn also has been in several plays His charm radiates from the stage. The female audience is bound to fall in love with this handsome young ac-tor. Tony’s family is just the opposite of Alice’s. His father is a very seri-

ous businessman who is much too stuffy. Mr. Kirby is played by Alan Hopkins. Hopkins is one of those un-expected delights on stage.

One would never guess that this mild mannered man could be a great actor on stage. Hopkins does a great job and is really talented.

The cast is lled with great character actors. For example DePinna (Cale Baskin) enjoys making loud and beautiful

reworks. Baskin is quite a charmer; the audience can look forward to see-ing him as a Greek discus thrower. Baskin is also a senior this year. He has performed in several local productions and always

gets warm responses from adoring fans. DePinna’s buddy is Poppin played by Matt Bentley. Poppin enjoys making masks. He ts in great with the kooky family. Bentley has got a lot of star potential.

This talented young man is sure to make a great name for himself. Another great actor on this stage is Aric Delashmit. Aric is a veteran to the Ruf n stage. He has grown up loving the theatre. His talent is clear to see. He plays both a Department of Justice investigator and a Russian prince. He is joined by Kevin Dunn. Kevin is also a veteran of the stage. He gets a certain glee in his eyes when he dons his trench coat and picks up his gun. The only thing he is afraid of is that drunken actress who is after him.

One of the funniest scenes deals with the IRS.Poor Grandpa (Williamson)

is being investigated by Mr. Henderson (Drew Montoya) for tax evasion. Grandpa chuckles and says he isn’t about to pay for something and get nothing in return. If he went to Macy’s he would come away with something so why shouldn’t the gov-ernment give him some-thing also. Drew is making his stage debut and shows great promise. He is also a senior at Brighton High School.

This romantic comedy will be sure to bring great laughs. The performance is by the Tipton Players a new community group. It will be performed at the Brighton Middle stage Tickets are sold at the door. Grandpa insisted that ticket prices stay low so everyone could hear his ideas about life, work and money you know you can’t take it with you!

Tickets are $5. It is a great price for a great show.

Not pictured are Lila Hyatt Sutton, Harriet Cobb Hendon, Jimmy Hensley, Ken Anderson, Carolyn Davis Rickard, Sanford Farmer, Ralph Smith, and Elizabeth Teasley Morgan.

Members of the 1959 gradu-ating class of Byars-Hall High School gathered at the Family Life Center of the First Baptist Church in Covington on May 2 to begin a day of activities in celebration of their golden anniversary. The day ended at the Covington Country Club with group photos and a buffet dinner.

The day began at 8:30 Saturday morning with a golf scramble. Because of inclement weather, only six classmates and guests were willing to ignore the coming rain. Richard Jackson, Kenneth Smith and Johnny Smith took top honors. Other participants were

Bobby White, Wise Smith and Billy Gilbreath.

At 11:30, classmates gathered in the Life Center for a luncheon. The Life Center was decorated with purple and gold stream-ers and with memorabilia from the '50s. Hyatt Williams gave the invocation.

After greeting old friends and socializing, members reintroduced themselves to the group and caught everyone up on what was going on in their lives. Barbara Davis Remi, mistress of ceremo-nies, led the class down memory lane about life at Byars-Hall High School during the ‘50’s with “Remember when…” or “Help

me remember when…” Teachers, dates, dances and pranks were most often discussed.

She then recognized the re-union planning committee made up of Jerry Creasy, chairman Nan Mashburn Fleming, Ed Flem-ing, Jere Hadley, Bobby White, Richard Jackson, Annette Branch Gilbreath, Bill Elam, Nell Hall Christopherson, Patricia Beasley Boswell, Walter McIntosh, Barbara Davis Remi and Hyatt Williams.

The luncheon ended with a prayer and with the class singing the school’s alma mater. After a short break, the festivities re-sumed at the Covington Country Club.

Group photographs were taken by Mitchel Kellum. A single group photograph was taken of all the classmates; then smaller group photos were taken of those who attended the various elementary schools: Holmes, Covington, Bur-lison, Garland, Mason, Owen and Charleston.

Larry Cullum then led the group in prayer before the buf-fet dinner. After dinner, Bobby White and Jere Hadley gave a special tribute to the 24 deceased classmates. Other memories were shared throughout the evening.

Ed Fleming recognized those businesses that contributed to

the reunion: Naifeh's Food Rite, Kroger, Turner Dairy and Charms. A special thanks went to First Baptist Church and the Covington Country Club for their help and support.

Richard Jackson, master of ceremonies, recognized those coming to the reunion from the farthest distance. Joe Rickard trav-eled from San Diego, California, and Bob Gasson from Scottsdale, Arizona. Forty-one classmates and 23 spouses attended this golden reunion.

Wayne Simmons, acting as DJ, ended the night with music from the '50s.
