Soloway KO slated to start in 2019

The Soloway Knockout Teams premieres next fall at the San Francisco NABC.

Unlike the Vanderbilt and the Spingold, the Soloway KO opens with a two-day Swiss. The event starts on the first Friday of the tournament and continues until the final two teams face off on

the second Thursday. Placement in the KO will be determined

primarily by a team’s finish in the Swiss round-robin with seeding points being less of a factor. Match awards in the two-day Swiss qualifying are platinum.

The event honors four-time world champion and 20-time NABC champ Paul Soloway.

Don’t miss these free lectures by some of the best-known players in the game! Talks will be held in Coral Ballroom 1, Mid-Pacific Center. Speakers and topics are subject to change.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSThinking bridge

By Eddie KantarCounting your tricks. The avoidance play.

Which finesse? Defensive discarding. Dlr: South ♠ 7 3 2 Vul: None ♥ K J 8 ♦ 7 4 ♣ A J 6 5 2 ♠ A Q 8 6 4 ♠ 10 5 ♥ Q 5 4 3 2 ♥ 10 9 7 ♦ 5 ♦ J 10 9 8 6 ♣ 8 7 ♣ Q 10 9 ♠ K J 9 ♥ A 6 ♦ A K Q 3 2 ♣ K 4 3 West North East South 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♠6 Lead commentary: As West, a strong lead

against notrump is low from A–Q-x–x–x-(x). If partner has the jack or can get in and lead through declarer’s probable king, you have a good chance of taking a bundle of tricks. The returns are not nearly as great when leading low from A–Q–x–x.

Defensive commentary: As West, when the ♠10 at trick loses to the jack, South is marked with the ♠K J 9. Partner’s ♠10 denies both the 9 and the K.

Play commentary: As South, you have eight top tricks and the idea is to set up a ninth without allowing East, the danger hand, in to push a

spade through your vulnerable ♠K 9. You should know that West has the A–Q from East’s third-hand play of the 10. It must be right to start with the ♦A and ♦K. No luck there when West discards a heart on the second diamond. You remain

with a choice of two queen finesses for your ninth trick. When you have a choice of two queen finesses, play the ace and then the king of the longer suit (clubs in this case). If the queen doesn’t drop, take a finesse in the shorter suit, hearts. If you do that, you survive this diabolical layout.

Defensive commentary #2: As East, when declarer leads a high diamond, play the ♦J, conventionally showing partner a sequence headed by the jack. As West, when discarding on the second diamond, discard from length (hearts), not shortness (clubs). If you discard from a doubleton and then show out on the second round of the suit, declarer knows partner’s exact holding in that suit. It’s called giving away the show – and drives partners crazy!

Gary Ratts and Cathy Stahler came from Cupertino CA to visit a place they both used to live at earlier points in their lives. Stahler spent some time in Honolulu in the 1950s and ’60s, when her aunt Alta Mae Goffin worked for developer Chinn Ho. “I was here when nothing was here,” Stahler said. “I stayed at the Halekulani when it was nothing but shacks.” Ratts was here for a few years in the 1970s when he was working with the U.S. Navy. He recalls parking his car at the gas station overnight to be in line when gas was being rationed. Though both have been playing bridge for 58 years and duplicate at least 15 years, they are low in masterpoints. “We don’t play in a lot of sanctioned games,” Ratts said, and for a long time they never got more than a quarter of a point at a time. “I think I figured out it was going to cost us $30,000 to make Life Master at the rate we were going.”

Appealing a ruling Players in NABC+ events who want to appeal

a director’s ruling initiate the process by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what they believe to be wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

Buy your NABC entry onlineDon’t wait in line! Buy your entries in advance

for all national-level events at BridgeWinners.com. Entries must be purchased by 10 a.m. the day

of the event EXCEPT for events that require pre-registration, in which case the ACBL deadline, or the earlier of the two, applies.

A nice feature: You can buy entries in advance and be charged for the total number of sessions played after the event is over.

• You even earn $50 a session ($100 for the day) from ACBL. The first session on Sunday starts at 11 a.m.; the

second session is scheduled for 5 p.m.If you haven’t been an operator before but are

familiar with playing on BBO, Jan Martel can train you reasonably quickly either on Saturday before or between sessions or on Sunday. If you find you are available Sunday, please email or text Jan, even at the last minute: marteljan at gmail or 530–574–5780 and she will answer any questions you may have.

Walking the dogBy Leo Bell

San Diegan Rick Roeder takes great delight in “walking the dog.” This doesn’t refer to his delight in exercising the poodle. In bridge slang, it is initially underbidding a hand with a long suit and then repeating the bid at higher levels until one is doubled. For example, opening 1♠ with a 10-card spade suit and rebidding the suit in competition up to the four level. Finally, the exasperated opponents double.

Rick has perfected the art. This is Board 21 from the first session of the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Rick sat South. Dlr: North ♠ Q J 10 8 Vul: N–S ♥ 8 7 5 ♦ A Q 8 4 2 ♣ 5 ♠ 7 3 ♠ 6 5 4 ♥ A Q J 10 9 4 ♥ K 6 2 ♦ K 3 ♦ J 10 7 6 5 ♣ K 9 3 ♣ 10 7 ♠ A K 9 2 ♥ 3 ♦ 9 ♣ A Q J 8 6 4 2 West North East South Pass Pass 1♣ 1♥ Dbl 2♥ 3♣! 3♥ Pass Pass 3♠! Dbl All Pass

Most would simply jump to 3♠ or 4♠ with the South hand after partner’s negative double, but not Rick. When the smoke cleared, he made five by playing the hand conservatively. I think this wasn’t just walking the dog, it was wagging the tail!

Cui culpa?By Barry Rigal

Bridge World used to run a feature asking the readership to apportion blame for a debacle between the partnership.

Let’s look at this deal presented by Zygmunt Marcinski, first as a single-dummy defensive problem. ♠ K 8 5 3 2 ♥ 9 8 2 ♦ Q 7 4 ♣ 8 7 ♠ J 6 ♥ 6 4 ♦ K 9 ♣ A J 10 6 4 3 2 West North East South 1♣(1) 3♣ Pass(2) Pass 3♥ Pass 4♥ All Pass

(1) 16+ HCP(2) 0–7 HCPYou lead … (don’t worry, this isn’t the moment

to apportion blame) the ♥4: 2, 7, ace. A spade goes 6, king, ace. Partner shifts to the

♣9: king, ace, 7. The ♣J is won by declarer’s queen as partner follows. He cashes ♥K: 6, 8 5. Now comes the ♠7: jack, 2, 9.

What next?Does declarer have three spades? For sure!

Partner would have overtaken the ♠J to play diamonds if he could. If declarer has the ♠Q, you’d better try to set up or cash diamonds. If partner has the ♠Q and ♥10, lead a third club. Partner can overruff dummy and you eventually collect a diamond and a spade.

West went for the second option, and this was the full deal. Cui culpa? ♠ K 8 5 3 2 ♥ 9 8 2 ♦ Q 7 4 ♣ 8 7 ♠ J 6 ♠ A 10 9 ♥ 6 4 ♥ 7 5 ♦ K 9 ♦ A 10 8 6 3 2 ♣ A J 10 6 4 3 2 ♣ 9 5 ♠ Q 7 4 ♥ A K Q J 10 3 ♦ J 5 ♣ K Q

Have you decided yet? The answer is that West was blameless and East takes 100 percent of the blame. With ♠A 10 9, he must follow with the ♠10 on the second round – denying ♠A Q 10 – or he would overtake to play diamonds. Now West knows to cash out.

Optiumn D By Barry Rigal

Even in the Blue Ribbon semifinal, bidding too much and daring your opponents to beat you is often a good approach. Dlr: South ♠ A J 10 8 6 5 Vul: E–W ♥ 7 ♦ 10 7 6 2 ♣ 10 5 ♠ 4 ♠ Q 9 2 ♥ A J 8 5 4 ♥ K Q 10 ♦ A Q J 8 ♦ 4 3 ♣ A K 6 ♣ Q 9 8 7 4 ♠ K 7 3 ♥ 9 6 3 2 ♦ K 9 5 ♣ J 3 2 West North East South Pass 1♥ 3♠ Pass Pass Dbl Pass 4♥ 4♠ Dbl All Pass

East led the ♦4 to the jack. West cashed the top two clubs and continued the suit. Declarer ruffed, cashed the ♠A and ran the ♠J. With time on his side, he could draw trump and knocked out the diamonds.

After the diamond lead, won by West, the best defense is not obvious, but I think he can work it out. Cash the ♣K, ♣A, underlead in hearts, then take the two diamond winners. You have the first six tricks. ♠ A J 10 8 6 5 ♥ — ♦ 10 ♣ — ♠ 4 ♠ Q 9 2 ♥ A J 8 5 ♥ K Q ♦ 8 ♦ — ♣ 6 ♣ Q 9 ♠ K 7 3 ♥ 9 6 3 ♦ — ♣ J

Now the ♦8: East ruffs with the ♠9 to promote his own queen.

West persisted in clubs and Glubok called for dummy’s ace, pitching a low diamond from hand. Declarer then ducked a diamond. West cashed his good club, East pitching a heart while South pitched the ♦8, and exited a heart. Glubok won the trick in dummy and cashed the ♥K J – West discarded a spade and a diamond while East discarded a diamond. Glubok cashed the ♠K and ♦A and … Yes!” he said. “I see a Heineken in my future!” The ♦7 ––the beer card – was the ultimate trick. One spade, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs: making three for plus 400

Meanwhile, in the same event, Alex’s son, Finn, was playing with Leigh Gold. Gold declared 3NT on the lead of a low spade. When declarer drove out the ♠A, West switched to a heart, giving declarer the tempo to set up diamonds for three tricks. Gold also took the last trick with the ♦7 – but he made four for plus 430.

2017 ACBL President Bob Heller presents the Reisinger Trophy to winners Yinghao Liu, Jack Zhao, Yuxiong Shen, npc Jianhua Miao and Zijian Shao.

Competition for the Reisinger Trophy (the Chicago Trophy until 1965) starts today. The event is a six-session open team event scored by board-a-match with two qualifying sessions, two semifinal sessions and two final sessions. It was contested as a four-session championship until 1966. The event is generally thought to be the toughest on the ACBL tournament calendar.

The event began in 1929 as the North American Open Team Championship and the prize was the Chicago Trophy, donated by the Auction Bridge Club of Chicago. (In 1928, the open team competition was for the Harold S. Vanderbilt Cup.)

The Chicago Trophy was replaced in 1965 by the Reisinger Memorial Trophy, donated by the Greater New York Bridge Association in memory of Curt H. Reisinger.

Reisinger (1891–1964), of New York City, was a principal patron of contract bridge and the American Contract Bridge League in the early years of both.

Reisinger was a great-grandson of Anheuser and a grandson of Busch, co-founders of the brewery from which he inherited great wealth. That wealth enabled him to become a stalwart financial supporter of the game, as well as a noted philanthropist on a far larger scale.

In the years when there was often a struggle to meet the League’s modest payroll, Reisinger was often called upon and never failed to help with a loan or an outright gift. His support made possible several early contract bridge tournaments, clubs and books.

Among the positions in which he served were director of the United States Bridge Association, president of the Greater New York Bridge Association and chairman of the ACBL. In 1953, Reisinger was named ACBL Honorary Member.

New Life MasterMimi Levison of Koloa

HI became a Life Master on Thursday playing in the Patsy Lum Wednesday-Thursday KO Bracket 2. She was playing with Stuart Vance, Dileep Bal and Patti Moore, all from Kauai, the Garden Island. Levison needed 15 gold points. She earned 11.54 on Tuesday by winning the Edith Neff Daylight KO Bracket 2, and the rest by reaching the Thursday semifinal of the later knockout.

MilestonesMax Schireson of Stanford

CA became a Bronze Life Master on Thursday playing in the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs with Debbie Rosenberg, placing 29th in the event for 30 platinum points. “I’m no longer eligible for the Gold Rush,” Schireson joked. It’s been a few years since he played in one.

Ron Leight of Santa Fe NM became a Ruby Life Master on Thursday playing in the 0–6000 Mini-Blue Ribbon Pairs with his wife, Ivy Leight, placing 14th. He was 21 points short of 1500 coming in and picked up 13.58 in regional events. The Mini-Blue overall of 19.57 covered the rest. It was Leight’s first time in the final of a national event. “This is harder than work,” he said.

An exercise in percentagesBy Barry Rigal

The Blue Ribbon second qualifier threw up this problem for declarer. Dlr: East Vul: E–W West East ♠ A ♠ K 8 5 ♥ A Q 10 4 3 ♥ K 5 2 ♦ Q J 7 6 ♦ 5 4 3 ♣ A 10 4 ♣ 8 7 5 3 West North East South Pass 1♥ 2♥ 3♦ 3♥ Pass

You may disagree with East’s raise to 2♥ as opposed to a nonforcing 1NT; I’m on the fence about it (and I made the call myself). Regardless, you receive the lead of the ♠J and congratulate yourself for not driving to game.

Having taken the ♠A (nice play!), you must decide whether to go the direct or indirect route. Indirect is to duck a club, hoping they play spades or diamonds for you. Direct, which was the line chosen at the table, was ♥A, ♥K, ♠K pitching a club. Now, what is the best play to hold the diamond losses to three?

I believe the right answer is to play a diamond from dummy and duck if right-hand opponent follows low unconcernedly. If a spade comes back, you pitch a club from hand, planning to regain the lead, draw trump and duck a second diamond. This line works against a doubleton honor in either hand ... but this is the full story: ♠ J 10 4 3 2 ♥ J 9 8 ♦ 9 8 ♣ Q J 9 ♠ A ♠ K 8 5 ♥ A Q 10 4 3 ♥ K 5 2 ♦ Q J 7 6 ♦ 5 4 3 ♣ A 10 4 ♣ 8 7 5 3 ♠ Q 9 7 6 ♥ 7 6 ♦ A K 10 2 ♣ K 6 2

Yes, South did pass, nonvulnerable, and if he had ducked his ♦K, he might have been the only defender in the field legitimately to hold declarer to eight tricks.

The Past Comes AliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van

de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-Internet era — these periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl.

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before. WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

NABC Results by Email/Text

Want to be notified when results and the Daily Bulletins from the NABC are posted online? Want to see your results in the events you played in? ACBL Live does just that.

With the ACBL Live notification system, you will receive emails and/or text messages after each session with links that go directly to the information you’re looking for. The email/text message will contain your score for the session and a link to your results. (These results will also be available on your MyResults page at MyACBL.) Players will also receive a notification to indicate when the Daily Bulletin for that day is available.

This service is automatic for members unless they have specifically opted out. To receive text messages, go to MyACBL at acbl.org and select Update My Information to enter your email address and/or cell phone number.

Also at MyACBL, visit the Privacy Settings tab to make sure you’ve selected the Subscribe setting for General Email Communication and Cell Phone Text Communication to receive these notifications.

The winners of last year’s North American Swiss Teams were Berend Van Den Bos, Agnes Snellers, Wubbo De Boer and Joris van Lankveld.

Play begins today in the six-session Keohane North American Swiss Teams, with semifinal matches on Saturday and the final matches on Sunday.

Players will be vying for the Keohane Trophy, donated by Ethel Keohane in 1973 in memory of her husband, William H. Keohane, one of the leading New England bridge personalities.

Bill Keohane (1896–1972) was a consulting engineer, bridge teacher and bridge administrator. He served as chairman of the 1970 Summer NABC in Boston and, for many years, was chairman of the New England Individual Championship.

Keohane was elected in 1972 to a one-year term as the first District Director of the newly created District 25 (New England). He died later that year, just before he was to attend his first Board meeting.

North American Swiss Team action begins today

Use of the bidding box – Alerts and Announcements

When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

FOR THE RECORDBy Robb Gordon

Psych!Benjamin Disraeli

famously said, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” In bridge we have a fourth kind – the psych, or psychic bid.

Psyching in bridge is a gross distortion of one’s hand in the bidding in an attempt to fool the opponents. Of course, you are also distorting your hand for partner and this isn’t without risk!

Psychs were supposedly invented and named in the early days of contract bridge by Dorothy Sims, wife and partner of the great player, P. Hal Sims. In those early days, psychs were much more common than they are today. As bidding has become more scientific, the risk/reward of psyching has made the practice generally undesirable. Indeed, up until about 25 years ago, there was a place to indicate on the convention card whether you never, rarely, occasionally or frequently psyched.

Psychs generate a lot of controversy and the Office of National Recorder is frequently contacted in this regard, both to report a psych and to argue for regulation and/or systematic monitoring.

Law 40 allows regulation of conventions. This law also allows the Regulating Authority to restrict psychs only in conjunction with conventional calls.

The ACBL prohibits psyching of artificial opening bids and responses thereto. The ACBL also prohibits psych “controls.” These are responses that allow the psycher to confirm whether he has psyched.

The looker-on sees most of the game

By Barry RigalWhen the spectator is Michael Rosenberg, you

can be sure that a few variations that did not actually come to fruition may be mulled over.

Rosenberg was watching the Life Master Pairs second final with the winners David Grainger and Greg Hinze sitting North and South respectively. Dlr: West ♠ K 10 9 3 Vul: Both ♥ 6 5 ♦ A Q 10 9 4 ♣ 5 3 ♠ A 7 2 ♠ Q J 8 ♥ 7 ♥ A Q 8 4 ♦ J 8 6 5 2 ♦ K 3 ♣ K 8 6 2 ♣ A Q 10 7 ♠ 6 5 4 ♥ K J 10 9 3 2 ♦ 7 ♣ J 9 4 West North East South Pass Pass 1♣ 1♥ 2♣ Dbl 3NT All Pass

Grainger, North, saw his partner lead the ♠6: 2, king, 8. Perhaps a trifle intellectually he placed declarer with 4–4–1–4 or 3–4–1-5, hence a singleton ♦K. So he laid down the ♦A and disappointedly shifted to his top heart. Declarer let it run, but missed his way later on and finished down one.

Had declarer drawn the correct inference from the play of the ♦A, he would have run the black suits, ending in this position: ♠ 10 ♥ 5 ♦ Q 10 ♣ — ♠ — ♠ — ♥ — ♥ A Q 8 ♦ J 8 6 5 ♦ K ♣ — ♣ — ♠ — ♥ K J 10 3 ♦ — ♣ —

The play of the ♦K catches South in a one-suit squeeze. If South discards the ♥3, he is endplayed by declarer leading a small one. If he unblocks the 10, declarer leads the ♥Q and South wins, to be caught in the same endplay.

If that doesn’t keep you up at night, imagine a heart suit of: ♥ 8 5 ♥ 9 ♥ A Q 6 4 ♥ K J 10 7 3 2

Now at trick three, North must shift to the ♥5 to avoid the squeeze.

In addition, the following are prohibited: • Frivolous psychs that are not an attempt to be

successful • Unsportsmanlike psychs by a pair not in

contention to aid or harm a pair in contention• Risk-free psyches – bids that by agreement,

prohibit partner from acting • Overly frequent psychs that create an implied

agreement in a partnership. While legal, it is frowned upon for an

experienced or strong pair to psych against an inexperienced or weak pair. Such actions create bad feelings and may cause an inexperienced pair to give up competitive bridge. It is also bad strategy, as the stronger pair is giving up its natural advantage.

Because psyching is legal, there is little a director or recorder can do. However, if there is reason to believe that the person who does this does so quite frequently, or if the person psyching appears to be a much better player than his or her partner, it is a good idea to report the psych through a Player Memo.

Because ACBL-sanctioned clubs must operate under the Laws of Duplicate Bridge, a club may not bar psychic bids. However, clubs generally have broad latitude to discipline their players, including suspending or barring them. If a club manager feels that a player is psyching so frequently as to be disruptive or is doing so in a predatory way against newer players, that club manager would do well to warn, and then discipline, the disruptive player.

But remember, psychs are a part of the game. When you are psyched against, often you will have been handed a gift. Take advantage of it!

Masterpoint disclaimerResults reported in the Daily Bulletin are subject

to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

“We’re delighted,” Massey said, explaining that Sands will be going over 6000 soon, so they might not have another chance at a national title at this level. The pair has been playing together for 18 years. “But we just started playing nationals the last two years,” Sands said.

Massey and Sands were third after Tuesday’s qualifying sessions and fourth after Wednesday’s semifinal. They moved back up to third in the first final session with a 54.5%, then made their move in the last session with a 60%.

They have a secret to their success. “We talk bridge all the time,” Massey said, at least an hour after every game. “There’s always something more to talk about and learn.”

They’re also avid readers of the Bridge Bulletin and especially enjoy practicing The Bidding Box problems. After completing a set, they’ll later try the same set of a problems from the other side. “That helped a bunch,” Massey said.

When Gawrys smilesBy Jan van Cleeff

When Dutch expert Marina Witvliet was kibitzing Pierre Zimmermann’s team on Monday Night in the Mitchell BAM, she experienced a remarkable moment. As soon as Piotr Gawrys saw dummy after his lead against 4♠, he was all smiles. However, nobody understood why.

“First time in my life I came across such a card combination: Ace till two, the perfect sequence,” the Polish star explained. Dlr: West ♠ A K Q 10 7 3 Vul: E–W ♥ Q ♦ J 8 4 ♣ A J 8 ♠ 9 8 2 ♠ 6 5 4 ♥ 9 5 ♥ K J 3 2 ♦ K 7 3 ♦ A 10 9 6 5 ♣ Q 10 6 4 2 ♣ 7 ♠ J ♥ A 10 8 7 6 4 ♦ Q 2 ♣ K 9 5 3

I asked my friend Rob van den Bergh to do the math. Such a combination occurs only once in 9462 deals. When you play 200 boards a week, this layout pops up approximately once every year.

Postmortem:1. 4♠ made 10 tricks.2. Apparently Piotr doesn’t play bridge enough.

Kupperstein was a beloved friend and mentor. A child of the Depression, Kup was a quick-witted musical prodigy who turned his talents into passion for classical music and all things intellectual.

As the station manager for the classical radio station KUAT in Tucson AZ, Kup mentored many students and staff, allowing him to share his love for music and serving the community. Kup had a second passion for rubber bridge and would teach the game to any unsuspecting undergraduate who showed interest. Fiercely fair and ethical, Kup used the game of bridge to reflect his own outlook on life – take on challenges, play the game right, accept your victories and defeats humbly and enjoy the company of friends and family.

While these plaudits acknowledge her bridge playing skills, she is most

beloved as a teacher … strict, sometimes humorous and always insightful. She enjoys the successes of her students, even if they outscore her (which is a rare occurrence) and is available to answer any questions. As a measure of their respect and affection, her students honor her with the Friday–Saturday Knockout Teams. Please play and enjoy. Bridge is a game of logic.

John JohnsonJohn Johnson Jr. was an

avid bridge player who began playing bridge in clubs in Aiken SC and Augusta GA. He played in multiple tournaments at all levels and achieved Life Master rating in the late 1970s.

He quit playing for quite a while but took up the game again when he retired and moved to Hawaii. He played for many years at both the Elks Club and the Ala Wai Golf Club and was happy to partner with others to help them in their quest to reach the Life Master rank. Bridge was the center of his social world, and his children wanted to honor his love of the game and the friends he played with by helping to sponsor a small portion of the North American Bridge Championships when the tournament returned to Hawaii.

Susan Kobayashi DaySusan

Kobayashi is the seventh of 10 children born into a Boston Irish Catholic family. She first discovered bridge at Regis College in Weston MA but had very little time to play after she moved to Hawaii to teach in 1968. Soon thereafter, she met and married Bert Kobayashi.

By 1975 Susan was teaching half time and raising their growing family. Susan, Bert and their three children have made major contributions to real estate development throughout the state of Hawaii through the Kobayashi Group.

We in Honolulu Unit 470 are very lucky that Susan decided to start playing on BBO while recovering from a major illness in the early 2000s. She soon became addicted to the game and now plays whenever she can. Susan’s kindness and generosity seem to know no bounds. She donated items to our silent auction that raised almost $3000

for this tournament’s hospitality fund and she arranged for us to hold our fourth Wednesday Unit game in her beautiful condo when we lost our usual venue.

Susan Kobayashi is a loving, kind, beautiful soul and we are grateful that she is part of our bridge community.

Thank you, Susan!

Wally YoungBy Friends of Wally Young

Wally Young has been an integral part of duplicate bridge in Honolulu since the early 1970s. He has a deep understanding of the game and his love and enthusiasm for bridge are contagious. Wally has taught several generations of students and has had success in playing with them at sectional, regional and national events.

He has been the club manager for Unit 470 for many years and he made sure that the regular Wednesday game continued after Karen and Dick Lanke retired. Wally has been a professional player and teacher since 2011. Most of all, Wally is appreciated for his good cheer, good humor and his willingness to help wherever help is needed. Thank you, Wally.
