RED RIBBON WEEK is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention program reaching millions
of Americans. During this week, students pledge to
live a drug free life in honor of the ultimate sacri-
fice made by DEA Special Agent, Enrique “Kiki”
Camarena. Agent Camarena died in 1985 at the hands of drug
traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs
to keep our country and children safe. We are celebrating Red
Ribbon Week October 23– October 31. The following is an outline
of activities during Red Ribbon Week:
Tuesday, 10/23: “Get RED-dy to Stay Drug-Free” Day
Wear drug-free t-shirt or a red shirt. Red Ribbon Bracelets
will be given out to wear all week
Wednesday, 10/24: “Put a CAP on Drugs” Day
Wear a baseball cap to school
Thursday, 10/25: “Give Drugs the SLIP” Day
Wear slippers to school (gym shoes still needed for recess and gym)
Tuesday, 10/30: “TEAM Up Against Drugs” Day
Wear your favorite sports team shirt
Wednesday, 10:31: “Say BOO! to Drugs” Day
Wear your Halloween costumes.
Students worked on two projects during their Art class for Red
Ribbon Week. They decorated cardstock “bricks” that will be
displayed in business windows around the Square, “blocking out
drugs in our community!” Students are encouraged to “find their
brick!” by taking a walk around the Square during Red Ribbon Week.
Students also decorated Strack’s paper grocery bags that the
stores will use during the week. A huge “THANK YOU” to our Art
teacher, Mrs. Czapla, for her help with these projects!
Additionally, grades K-2 will be having a coloring contest and grades
3-5 will be having an essay contest. The winner of the essay con-
test will receive a bike and the winner of the coloring contest from
each (K-2) will receive an assortment of Red Ribbon items. The
deadline to turn in the coloring sheet and essay is Tuesday,
October 30th.

October is Bullying Awareness Month Statistics show that an adult was notified in only
about a third of bullying cases. Kids don’t tell
adults for many reasons:
• Bullying can make a child feel helpless. Kids
may want to handle it on their own to feel in
control again. They may fear being seen as
weak or a tattletale.
• Kids may fear backlash from the kid who bul-
lied them.
• Bullying can be a humiliating experience. Kids
may not want adults to show what is being said
about them, whether true or false. They may
also fear that adults will judge them or punish
them for being weak.
• Kids who are bullied may already feel socially
isolated. They may feel like no one cares or
could understand.
• Kids may fear being rejected by their peers.
Friends can help protect kids from bullying, and
kids can fear losing this support.
This is why it is so important to talk frequently to
your child about this important topic. For more
great information on bullying and helping your
child, please read the article, “Face Bullying With
Confidence, 8 Skills Kids Can Use Right Away”
which can be found on at www.kidpower.org under
Articles section.
