Understand, please, that Bicarbonate ofSoda is not a cure-all. Its field of usefulnessas a home remedy is' limited to well-definedailments. Understand, also, that it shouldbe regarded as an aid-not a substitute-to the physician. But, as a study of the

BAKING SODA, which is Bicarbonate ofSoda, is described in that authoritativework, The New Standard Dictionary, as,"a white crystalline substance, less solublethan sodium carbonate and having only aslight alkaline taste, used in, cookery, inbaking powders and in medicine." Its useas a medicine is briefly! outlined by Nelson'sEncyclopaedia as follows:

"Sodium bicarbonate is used in medicine as anantacid (an alkaline remedy for stomach acidity),and, on account of the large amount of carbondioxide that is readily set free from it by acids orby heating, it is an important component of Seid-litz powders and other effervescing mixtures, andof baking powders."

The New International Encyclopaedia says:

"Sodium bicarbonate alkalinizes the blood andsecretions, and is used as a corrective in func-tional diseases of the stomach."

The proved value of Arm & Hammer Bicar-bonate of Soda as a therapeutic agent is furtherevinced by the following evidence of a promi-nent physician in a letter to the Church &Dwight Company:

"In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the 'Flu' withthe U. S. Public Health Service it was brought tomy attention that rarely anyone who had beenthoroughlY alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda con-tracted the disease, and those who did contract it,if alkalinized early, would invariably have mildattacks. I have since that time treaied all cases of'Cold,' Influenza and LaGrippe by first givinggenerous doses of Bicarbonate of Soda, and inmany, many instances within 36 hours thesymptoms would have entirely abated.

"Further, within my own household, beforeWoman's Clubs and Parent-Teachers' Associations,

I have advocated the use of Bicarbonate of Sodaas a preuentiue for "Colds," with the result thatnow many reports are coming in stating thatthose who took "Soda" were not affected, whilenearly everyone around them had the "Flu."

"Besides doing good in respiratory affections,bicarbonate of soda is of inestimable value in thetreatment of Alimentary Intoxication, Pyelitis(inflammation of the pelvis of the kidney), Hyper-Acidity of Urine, Uric Acid disturbances, Rheuma-tism and Burns. An occasional three-day course ofBicarbonate of Soda increases the alkalinity of theblood, assists elimination and increases the resist-ing poue« of the body to aU Infectious Diseases.

"---by advocating the therapeutic use of com-pressed yeast has no doubt benefited the healthof many, but the value of Yfast as a therapeuticagent is incomparable to that of pure Bicarbonateof Soda.

"The value of the World's famous Spas andHealth Springs is largely in the Alkalinity of thewater. A comparative few may need Vitamine,but our great "National Crime" is over-eating,both in Vita mines and everything else, which,

among other things, means an increased acid re-tention within the body and a predisposition toRheumatism, Gout, etc.

"Bicarbonate of Soda will not prevent the crimeof over-eating any more than water unappliedwill prevent a fire, but like water to a fire, ifproperly applied, it will neutralize the effect ofcarelessness, and help stay the body in its processof self-destruction,"

TESTED HOUSEHOlD REMEDIES

In order to secure the best results withArm & Hammer Pure Bicarbonate of Soda(Baking Soda) when taken internally, cer-tain simple rules must be observed. MateriaMedica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics(Bastedo, Page 88) dearly outlines theserules as follows:

"The effect of an alkali in the stomach will varyaccording to the nature of the stomach contentsat the time of its administration. In the restingperiod (after food is digested) sodium bicarbonatemerely dissolves mucus and is absorbed as bicar-bonate into the blood, to increase its alkalinitydirectly.

"In the digestive period it reduces the secretion ofgastric juice, neutralizes a portion of the hydrochloricacid, liberates the carminative carbon dioxide gas, andis absorbed as sodium chloride.

"In cases of fermentation or 'sour stomach' it mayneutralize the organic acids and so result in theopening of ~ spasmodically closed pylorus (the

opening between the stomach and the small in-testine) ; while at the same time it acts to overcomeflatulency (accumulation of gas in the stomachand bowels).

"The time of administration; must, therefore, bechosen Wl'th a deflnite purpose, Usually for hyper-chlohydria (excess of acid) one hour or two hoursafter meals will be the period of harmful excess ofacid.

"In continuous hyperacidity and in fermentativeconditions a dose an hour before meals will tend toprepare the stomach for the next meal ; or some-times a dose will be necessary immediately aftereating, because of abnormal acid or gas havingbeen present at the commencement of the meal.(For the average person one-half hour aftermeals is recommended).

"A dose at bedtime tends to check the earlymorning acidity, or a dose on arising cleans thestomach of acid and mucus before breakfast."

Whenever taking a bicarbonate solution inter-nally the soda should. be dissolved in coldwater.

ACIDITY

Dissolve a level teaspoonful of Bicarbonate ofSoda in a tumbler of cool water and take one totwo hours after meals. For a tonic form, aboutone-quarter teaspoonful before meals.

BABY'S BATH

Two teaspoonfuls of Bicarbonate of Soda to agallon of water, dissolving it in a little water be-fore adding it to the bath.

BABY'S BOTTLE

To make sweet after washing, fill with water towhich has been added one-half teaspoonful of Bicar-bonate of Soda, and leave standing until bottle isneeded.

BATH

A most delightful bath may be taken by fillingthe bathtub with water as hot as can be comfort-ably borne and then thoroughly dissolving in itfrom one-half to one pound of Bicarbonate ofSoda. It has the effect of softening the skin andgiving it a velvety texture; it also corrects, in agreat measure, body odors.

BODY ODORS

As an absolutely harmless and wonderfully effec-tive deodorant, Bicarbonate of Soda is fast becom-ing recognized as an indispensable adjunct to thedaily toilet of fastidious people. It checks thatrelentless enemy of dainty women-c-excessive arm-pit perspiration.

First thoroughly wash the parts with hot waterand soap, drying thoroughly. Apply the Bicar-bonate of Soda dry with a powder-puff or absorbentcotton; or place one teaspoonful (slightly moist-ened) in the palm of the hand and apply underthe arms.

COLDS

A half teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in aglass of cold water, and repeated if necessary inone or two hours, will often ward off a cold in itsearly stages.

In addition to the above a hot Soda bath isvery beneficial. Use half pound to one pound ofBicarbonate of Soda in as hot a bath as can beborne. Remain immersed in the water for aboutfifteen minutes. It is important to go to bed atonce after this bath in order to avoid exposure.

A bath taken in this way causes the Alkali topenetrate the system and is a material aid to thehuman system in throwing off the germs of Grippe.

COLDS AND INFLUENZA

A Physician Writes:

"In 1918 and 1919 while. fighting the 'Flu' withthe U. S. Public Health Safety Service it wasbrought to my attention that rarely anyone whohas been thoroughly alkalinized with Bicarbonateof Soda contracted the disease, and those who didcontract it, if alkalinized early, would invariablyhave mild attacks. I have since that time treatedall cases of 'Cold,' influenza and La Grippe by firstgiving generous doses of Bicarbonate of Soda, andin many, many instances within 36 hours the symp-toms would have entirely abated."

In the event of a threatened attack we recommendthe following treatment:

During the first day take six doses of half tea-spoonful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Sodain glass of cool water, at about two hour intervals.

During the second day take four doses of halfteaspoonful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate ofSoda in glass of cool water, at the same intervals.

During the third day take two doses of half teaspoon-ful of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda in glass ofcool water morning and evening, and thereafter halfteaspoonful in glass of cool water each morning un-,til cold is cured.

CORNS AND BUNIONS

Corns and bunions may be softened and relievedby making a salve of equal proportions of lard andBicarbonate of Soda, and applying at night beforeretiring.

DYSPEPSIA OR HEARTBURN

A quarter of a teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Sodadissolved in a tumbler of cold water, taken threetimes a day, will be found very beneficial.

"Sodium Bicarbonate is the most efficient drug forgeneral use (in acid dyspepsia), about one-quarterteaspoonful before meals for a tonic form. In hyper-chloric (acid) dyspepsia a level teaspoonful twohours after meals."

ECZEMA

"Externally, in solution, it (Bicarbonate of Soda)is a solvent for dried exudates (secretion) such asthe crusts in, seborrheic eczema." Two level tea-spoonfuls of Bicarbonate of Soda to a pint ofwater gives the proper solution in such cases.

HEADACHE (SICK)

"Bicarbonate of Sodium" (Baking Soda) ......••"islargely used as an antacid in gastric fermentationand in sick headaches arising from this condition."Dissolve one teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Sodain a glass of cold water.

HICCOUGH

A teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda dissolvedin half a glass of cold water will, in most cases,give instant and permanent relief.

HIVES

"The local irritation and itching may be relievedby a dilute solution of Bicarbonate of Soda andwater (Soda) either in solution or paste is asoothing application for itching, insect bites, andburns. It is not caustic "-Materia Medica: Pharmacology and Therapeutics

HYPERACIDITY

Add a level teaspoonful of Bircarbonate of Sodato a glass of cold water. "It is beneficial if given aftermeals in hyperacidity due to fermentation."

INDIGESTION

"In many cases it will be found that the adminis-tration of small doses of- Bicarbonate of Soda, five toten grains" (quarter teaspoonful and a half a glass of

cold water) "before each meal will cause free secretionof gastric juice, particularly if it be given simul-taneously with bitter substances which act as stim-ulants to the gastric mucosa "

INSECT BITES

Bicarbonate of Soda "either in solution or pasteis a soothing application in erythema, urticaria,itching, burns and insect-bites."-Materia Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

INTESTINAL DISEASES

If food distresses the stomach, give a quarter ofa teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in a wine-glass of milk. "The alkalies have an extended usein diseases of the stomach and intestines, especiallythe former. Although we do not fully understandall their effects, it is obvious that they can neutral-ize an excess of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

"They are, therefore, indicated in all cases ofhyperacidity and hypersecretion; but in the author'sexperience they must be given in large doses.

"In hyperacidity they should, of course, be givenafter meals, preferably shortly before the time atwhich the patient expects disagreeable sensationsarising from the hyperacidity, such as pyrosis (gas)and heartburn."

"Very often, bathing the parts with one drachm(teaspoonful) of Bicarbonate of Soda to a pint ofcold water gives relief temporarily. . In otherinstances, to each bath of thirty gallons may be addedabout one pound of Bicarbonate of Soda."

. Ivy POISONINGThe eruption caused by Ivy Poisoning is reduced

and the itching quieted by frequent bathing with asolution (two teaspoonsful of Bicarbonate of Soda toa pint of warm water).

LEUCORRHOEA(Whites)"In a general way the agent (Bicarbonate of

Soda) is advantageous in the treatment of leucor-rhoea, especially if the discharge has an acid re-action." Use it freely in solution of two teaspoonfulsdissolved in a pinf of water as a douche.-Materia Medica, Pharmacology and 'Therapeutics.

LUMBAGOUse one-half pound to one pound of Bicarbonate

of Soda in bath as hot as can be borne. Remainimmersed in the water for fifteen minutes or more.Then go to bed to avoid exposure.

MOUTH WASHBicarbonate of Soda is a good mouth wash, in

fact, better than any other, as it neutralizes theacids which secrete themselves around the teeth,thereby preventing the decaying effect of theseacids. Dissolve a full teaspoonful of Soda in apint of water.

"A good cheap mouth wash, given by Seifert,may be made by dissolving one full teaspoonful ofsodium bicarbonate in a pint of water, and addingone tablespoonful of spirits of peppermint, orcologne, or simply a piece of camphor or a table-spoonful of spirits of camphor. A small amount ofthis mixture is diluted with water, half-and-half,each time."

PERSPIRATION

An absolutely harmless and wonderfully effectiverelief from the annoyances of excessive perspira-tion is offered in Bicarbonate of Soda. Applied asdirected below, it will keep the under-arm sweetand dry and prevent the ruining of gowns, waists,etc:

First, thoroughly wash the parts with hot waterand soap, drying thoroughly. Apply the Bicarbonateof Soda dry with a powder puff or' piece of absorbentcotton; or place one teaspoonful (slightly moist-ened) in the palm of the hand and apply underthe arm.

In addition to being absolutely odorless, Bicar-bonate of Soda has the added advantage of beingabsolutely, harmless, as its use in no. way impairsthe action of secretive glands.

RHEUMAT-ISM

Sodium Bicarbonate "has been widely employedin the treatment of rheumatism and is found to beof great service in allaying pain and soreness in thejoints when used in a lotion made by dissolving itin water and applying it to the part on lint or rag."Use a saturated solution of two to four teaspoonfulsdissolved in a pint of water.

Also use as a bath, adding one-half pound to onepound of Baking Soda in tub of water as hot ascan be borne. Remain immersed in the water forfifteen minutes or more. Then go to bed to avoidexposure.

SCALDS OR BURNS

"Externally the agent (Bicarbonate of Soda)seems to possess antiseptic properties. Because ofthe presence of carbon, with its alkaline reaction,the agent is applicable to burns; applied in the formof a moist paste, it will relieve the pain at once inmost cases.-Materia Medica, Therapeutics and Pharmacology.

Cover scald or burn with a paste of Soda andwater. Then cover with a damp cloth.

SKIN

A shiny, red, hot-weather complexion is cooledand refreshed by a bath of warm water and Bicar-bonate of Soda. Add one teaspoonful of Soda toa pint of water.

SOUR STOMACH

"In cases of fermentation or 'sour stomach' it(Bicarbonate of Soda) may neutralize the organicacids and so result in the opening of a spasmodi-cally closed pylorus (the opening between thestomach and the small intestine); while at thesame time it acts to overcome flatulency (accumu-lation of gas in the stomach and bowels)."-i-Moteria Medica, Pharmacology and Therapeutics.

cold water, and take one to two hours after meals.

SUNBURN

Cover the affected parts with a paste of Arm &Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda and water. Imme-diately upon application a cooling sensation willbe experienced. When the moisture has been ab-sorbed from the paste, the fire of the burn willhave disappeared and the danger of blistering is

lessened. Application of the paste as soon aspossible after one is burned is advisable.

TOOTHACHE

"Sodium Bicarbonate in solution (two teaspoon-fuls to a pint of water) on plugs, of cotton in pain-ful cavities, or applied to the gums appeasesagonizing toothache (Duckworth) ."

the mucous membrane of the mouth in nearly allinflamed and irritable conditions, and may befreely used. It has also the advantage of over-coming or in some measure of neutralizing acidconditions." Care of the Teeth-Hopkins, page 124.

To PRESERVE ENAMEL OF TEETH

"In order to prevent early decay of the teeth theyshould be kept free of albuminous coating. Thiscan be accomplished by the daily use of a good fatneutralizer. Such a neutralizer can be found inthe use of BICARBONATE OF SODA. Actingas an acid neutralizer, it dissolves the fatty acidsin the mouth without damage to the enamel of theteeth. It leaves the mouth clean and 'the teethfree from the film of animal matter, which, if notremoved. would soon become the lodging placefor myriads of bacteria, to the ultimate ruin of theenamel of the teeth."

Dissolve one level teaspoonful of Bicarbonate ofSoda in a glass of cool water and take on arising in themorning. This will clean the stomach of the mucusthat has accumulated during the night and act as amild laxative on the bowels.

COLICFor a baby from one to six months of age with Colic

and distended abdomen give in an enema one levelteaspoonful of Soda dissolved in a half glass (two ounces)of warm water.
