A Message From Your GP – Dr Lloyd Sussens

In tHIS ISSuE I would like to talk to

you about a topic that is very difficult

to discuss with patients, Cancer.

I have recently had to diagnose

several people with various forms

of cancer and it is still a difficult task

telling someone they have cancer.

There are many different types

of cancer and they all have varying

outcomes and treatments. The

common cancers that we see

are lung cancer, breast cancer,

prostate cancer and bowel cancer.

The important thing with all of these

cancers is early detection and

diagnosis, allowing patients the

best chance of curing the disease.

There are national screening

programs for breast and bowel

cancer and there is still debate

surrounding screening for prostate

carcinoma. The screening program

for bowel cancer consists of a

simple test to detect the presence

of blood in faeces, the kit is being

mailed out to all 55, 60 and 65

year olds. If the test is positive

then the patient will be offered a

colonoscopy either through the

public health system or a private

Colonoscopist.

The breast screening program

is well established and has resulted

in a decrease in the death rate from

breast cancer. This program is free

and open to all women over the

age of 40. There is no screening

program for lung cancer because

no method of screening has found

to change the outcome. The most

important aspect in lung cancer is

prevention and the most important

way to prevent lung cancer is

to stop, or never start, smoking

cigarettes. If you do smoke and make

the choice to quit your risk of lung

cancer will decrease each year that

you have stopped smoking. After 10

years of having not smoked, the risk

of lung cancer will have reduced to

that of a non smoker. Some people

will still unfortunately develop lung

cancer many years after quitting;

however it is still worth stopping.

Your GP or Pharmacist can help

with strategies to QUIT and in turn

greatly increase your odds of an

extended life.

Need To See An Orthopaedic Surgeon? Meet Dr Michael Delaney

Limited Edition Estēe Lauder Sets - Now On Counter!

MICHAEL DELAnEy was born in Wondai. His mother was a teacher and his father a school principal and this meant many moves throughout country QLD – Quilpie, Maleny, Carmilla, Witta and finally Bundaberg. During those years he enjoyed following the Works Department men around the school grounds, watching them sawing wood and drilling and hammering. Perhaps this was his first introduction to the skills he would later use as an Orthopaedic Surgeon.

Michael finished high school at North Bundaberg State High in 1980 and initially enrolled in Engineering at uQ. He soon realised that Medicine was the career for him, so he came home to Bundaberg for six months and picked tomatoes and chipped cane. He returned to university with callouses on his hands in 1981 to study Medicine for six years.

Upon graduation, all first year doctors were asked by the Health Department if they were

“keen” or “ willing” to be placed in Western QLD. Michael was one

of the only graduates who said he was “keen”, so the first few years of his medical practice were spent in places like Mt Isa, Mornington Island and texas. He eventually got back to Bundaberg and decided to specialise in Orthopaedic Surgery.

Michael completed his Fellowship in 1998, the year that his second son was born. With a newborn and a toddler, he and his wife made the move back to Bundaberg to be close to their families. Michael commenced private Orthopaedic Practice in 1999

and their third son arrived in 2000. Dr Delaney has a strong

commitment to public health, evidenced by his contribution as a visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Bundaberg Base Hospital. He has recently been acknowledged by QLD Health for more than 25 years of continuous service to the public health system.

In 2005 he was recognised by the University of QLD, receiving the Mervyn neely Award for excellence in surgical teaching.

Whilst his family thinks he works all the hours of the day,

Michael is very involved with his son’s and all of their cultural and sporting pursuits and derives great pleasure from his family.

Michael continues to update his orthopaedic skills and is at present one of the few orthopaedic surgeons in Australia who is now using “Patient

Specific Instrumentation” for knee replacement surgery. We often think that cutting edge technology is only available in the city, but in fact, many specialists are doing work of the same calibre in the regional areas.

A dedicated surgeon, and family man, Dr Delaney is a quiet achiever.
