December 2016 - January 2017

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I want to wish everyone a great Holiday Season!

Just a couple of reminders, we do not have a General Meeting in December and our December and January newsletters are com-bined as one publication; our next issue will be February.

FAN is a great way to meet new friends and I encourage you to get involved in an activity. Mona Malone has just taken the position of Activities Chair, so see her at the activity desk and sign up for one … or more … of our many fun activities.

Our Christmas Charity Luncheon will be a great success because so many of you have given your time to put it together. Many thanks to all for your help. We will be able to give a large dona-tion to our charity of choice, Family Violence Center at Northwest Assistance Ministries.

Also, thanks for donating baskets and other items to help the raffle and silent auction to raise money for our charity.

The luncheon and Christmas cookie exchange are fun events. Be-ing a member of FAN is about women helping women and enjoy-ing lots of fun activities… so get involved and enjoy!

I hope you have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season with your friends and family.

Carol Huddleston, President

Unique local museum brings pioneers to life

Klein. Doerre. Wunderlich. Thiess. What inspired these street and school names?

Pioneer families who settled the Klein-Spring-Tomball area are honored in this way. Going fur-

ther, the Klein Texas Historical Foundation was established in 1988 to help preserve documents,

photos and buildings and to promote interest in learning the community’s history.

The Foundation’s centerpiece is Wunderlich Farm, the cornerstone of which is the 1891 house

built by the youngest son of the first Wunderlich immigrant. This tiny home was originally the res-

idence of Peter Wunderlich, his wife Sophie Krimmel Wunderlich and their 12 children.

Steve Baird, Living History Educator at Klein ISD, will bring this one-of-a-kind living history to

FAN members at the January 3 General Meeting. Dressed as a farmer in the 1800s, Steve delights

adults and children as he educates them about pioneer life in our community. In a unique educa-

tional program, fourth grade students throughout Klein ISD enjoy a half-day hands-on tour of the

working farm on 20 acres adjacent to Doerre Middle School. They experience a 1925-themed

school lesson, learn their way around an old-time outdoor kitchen and try gardening as if it’s 1922.

Above all, they learn of the hardships faced by settlers who worked the land.

Kids also interact with the farm’s animals, including goats, sheep, horses, rabbits and chickens. All

the animals have a purpose on the farm, and kids love petting them. Popular this year was a new-

born goat, just 18 inches tall.

Wunderlich Farm also hosts a Farmer’s Market, including demonstrations of 1800s farm life in

Klein, on the last Saturday of most months. Visit heirloom vegetable gardens and barns filled with

tools that served the people of this community while strolling among several original buildings

that have been moved to the shade of age-old trees.

Popular community events at the Farm include an Old Fashioned Christmas Market on December

3, a candlelight tour of the grounds December 21, and Heritage Day on the last Saturday in May.

Here’s another easy way to support distressed families

Hotel amenities and samples you receive in the mail

can be a big help to families served by NAM’s Family Violence Center, FAN’s 2016 charity.

Shampoo, soap, lotions from hotels and small snack samples we receive in the mail are welcome niceties for these client families. Simply look for the basket at the registration area at the Christ-mas Luncheon and future meetings. It’s an easy way to offer care.

Lost? Found!! If you leave an item at Faithbridge after a General Meeting, please con-tact Lin Fish, [email protected]. Lin picks up any random items left behind, including two tote bags of canasta material left after the Sep-tember meeting.

SENDING SUNSHINE WISHES TO OUR FRIENDS

Please keep in your thoughts and prayers these friends and neighbors who are ill or recovering, have lost loved ones, or have great news to share.

Our sincere sympathy goes out to Clarita Doussan. Her husband Chuck lost his fight with can-cer on October 27. Please keep Clarita and her family in your prayers. She served on FAN’s Board for several years.

Idalia Skates lost her husband Glenn on October 27. He was a survivor of tonsil cancer, but radiation side effects took their toll on his body. Idalia is the FAN auditor and a current Board member. Please keep her and her family in your prayers.

June McMillin had knee surgery recently. She is healing well and would like to thank everyone for their cards and phone calls.

FINAL REPORT FROM DIRECTORY EDITOR

Now that the directories have been turned over to Sherry Dunn, who will distribute directories for the remainder of the year, I would like to report the results of the methods I tried to decrease the amount of waste created by members being unable to pick up a directory.

The deadline for payment of dues in time to secure a member’s contact information being in the directory was extended this year to July 30, 2016. (In past years the deadline was June 30.) Since the turn-around time for having the directories printed decreased due to vendor efficiency and improved technology, less time is needed for printing than in the past. The deadline was extended to give as many members as possible the opportunity to be in the directory.

We ordered 300 printed directories.

Totals prior to the November General meeting:

Total ordered 300+

Sent to advertisers 10

Picked up by member or her friend 201

Given to Activity Leaders distribution 28

Delivered to member’s home 15

Given to Sherry Dunn 46

Members who had not picked up a directory by the October General Meeting were called and a message was left if no one answered. Some did not return my call. Ten or so members stated they would pick up the directory at the November General Meeting.

Several directories on the home delivery list were undeliverable due to the home being in a gated community. Without the gate code, I was unable to gain access. I waited to see if I could gain ac-cess by waiting for someone with the code to enter but could wait only so long for access in this manner.

The remaining directories will be used for new members, returning members and continuing member pick up.
