The authors have con- tributed works specifically written for this compilation, which creates a forum for writers to voice their opinions, hopes, and concerns for the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. The 50 poignant essays and poems of Comeback Wolves are divided into five sections: “Invocations to Return the Wolf” introduces concepts, such as the ecological healing that wolves can create, and our culture’s lingering fears and hatreds. “A Howling from the Belly” deals with the tensions between environmentalists and ranchers in the pursuit to reintroduce the wolf. “The Voltage of Legends” focuses on the reintroduction efforts, and proposes alternative ways of understanding wolves. “Becoming Wolf” explores various ways to see ourselves as kin to wolves. “Landscapes With Wolves” considers the future of wolves through reintroduction efforts, looking to our near future where we will be able to again live in harmony with wolves. This book is the brainchild of Gary Wockner, an environmental writer and ecologist in Fort Collins, Colorado. He has written for publications such as Orion, High Country News, and Rocky Mountain News. He currently serves as a wildlife advocate on the Colorado Wolf Working Group. Gregory McNamee is the author of several books including Blue Mountains Far Away: Journeys into the American Wilderness. He also contributes to many publications in the United States and abroad.
