Mother’s Day Next Sunday
Have you recently stopped to ponder God's love for you? Jesus' wonderful words are recorded in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish, but have everlasting life." Here are three aspects to God's love worth contemplating over an open Bible and a hot cup of coffee.
It was an Initial Love. In 1 John 4:19, John states, "We love him, because He first loved us."
Before there were stars to twinkle in the night sky, thoughts of you twinkled in the heart of God. Before there was a sun to warm the earth, thoughts of you warmed the heart of God. Before there was a moon to tug at the oceans and create the tides, thoughts of you tugged at the heartstrings of God! He first loved us!
It is an Intelligent Love. God is not surprised by our faults and failures. He knows all about us, yet He still loves us anyway. Romans 5:8 declares, "But God demonstrates His own love for us
in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." He didn't wait to love us after we cleaned up, but while we were yet sinners, His heart ached for our souls. In all of our filthiness, degradation, and rebellion He loved us anyway! Paul stated it like this in Ephesians 2:4, "But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us..."
It is an Infinite Love. In John 3:16 we find a very little word with an infinite meaning. "For God so loved the world." Only in this context can one understand why God would sacrifice His only Son for fallen man. The reason - He so loved the world! His love is indescribable, inexhaustible, and forever undeniable. The proof of His love was nailed to a cross on a hill outside the city of Jerusalem for all the world to see. Man may reject God and be banished to Hell unsaved, but he will not go to Hell unloved.
Frederick M. Lehman captured in verse what we feel as we consider God's love for us. "The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell; it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win; His erring child He reconciled, and pardoned from his sin. O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure the saints' and angels' song."
