Thanks to you, 2016 was yet another great year for Friends of Gumbo Limbo. Our total revenue increased, boosted by healthy gift store sales and donations. Friends funded a number of projects during the year with an aim toward supporting vital research and sea turtle rehabilitation. Those projects include: continued support with

tracking devices that will provide data regarding the feeding grounds and migration patterns of sea turtles

a portable X-ray machine for the sea turtle rehabilitation facility

and a spectrometer for lighting data research for sea turtle rehabilitation

completion of the lighting upgrades to the outdoor aquariums due to the generosity of the Davenport Family Foundation

Friends continued to fund an increasing number of scholarships for graduating high school and college graduate students pursuing degrees in relevant scientific fields. In addition, we supported Sea Turtle Month, the lecture series and the Center’s volunteer recognition programs. Friends has no debt and maintains $200,000 in a reserve account for emergencies.

“2016 was an even busier year than ever before for sea turtle rehabilitation at Gumbo Limbo! We had some very challenging cases this year which provided unique opportunities to apply new treatments.

In particular, a juvenile Loggerhead rescued in March by the Boca Raton Police Department, suffered from severe boat strike injuries. We were able to use new wound-vac technology donated by KCI Animal Health to save this turtle’s life. In early November, we admitted our first adult hawksbill sea turtle to our rehabilitation facility, due to a fishing line flipper entanglement injury. Despite the severity of the wounds, initial treatments with cold laser therapy show promise and we are confident that we will be able to save the flipper.

As in previous years, our rehabilitation center continues to treat green sea turtle cases with fibropapilloma tumors. These cases often require multiple surgeries to recover fully, but we continue to learn from each case and release more successfully healed patients each year. This year, we even flew a sea turtle across the country! Carr, one of our permanent resident green sea turtles, was transferred to the Sea Life Michigan Aquarium, compliments of FedEx. This has been an exciting year and we cannot wait to see what 2017 has in store!”

Friends of Gumbo Limbo celebrated its 7th annual Sea Coast Toast cocktail party and auction on February 18th, which was held at Lakeside Terrace. This benefit evening afforded the community an opportunity to celebrate our achievements in coastal and marine environmental education, conservation, preservation and research.

Over 200 guests contributed to help us raise a combined total of $16,300.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the annual CRESTT Award, which recognizes individuals and groups who are devoted to protecting and conserving coastal and marine ecosystems and this year we presented the award to John Englander.

John Englander is an oceanographer, consultant and leading expert on sea level rise. His broad marine science background coupled with explorations to Greenland and Antarctica allows him to see the big picture of sea level rise and its societal impacts. We thank him for all of his contributions that align with our mission.

CRESTT stands for Conservation, Research, Education and Stewardship for Today and Tomorrow.

The Board of Trustees of Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Inc. has established three Gordon Gilbert high school senior scholarships named to honor Gordon Gilbert and one Charles N. Kurucz graduate student research grant award.

The Gordon J. Gilbert merit-based scholarship awards $2,500 scholarships to high school seniors who plan to continue their education in a marine-related major that ties into our mission.

The Charles N. Kurucz Memorial need-based scholarship awards one high school recipient with $2,500 for their freshman year of college, and grants eligibility a second year for $2,500 based on first year performance.

The Manjunath and Roja Pendakur scholarship awards one first generation College student with $2,500 for their freshman year of college,

The graduate student research grants are awarded for Masters and PHD candidates performing research at a university which supports our mission.

The Scholarship Committee selected the following winners for 2016:

THE LEGACY OF MARY ANN

AND GEORGE SINCLAIR Extraordinary Gumbo Limbo Volunteers and Benefactors Dedicated to the memory of Mary Ann & George Sinclair By Nancy Leeds & Barb Sinclair

Each brought unique expertise to their volunteering and the comradery

spawned by their connection to Gumbo Limbo created lifelong friendships.

Mary Ann’s forte was her love of teaching, fostered in part by her role as a

Girl Scout leader and she carried the torch of learning and ignited the flames

of education in those she touched.

The 1995-96 volunteer of the year, Mary Ann was often found on her hands

and knees helping students make sun prints of the hammock’s leaves. She

gladly waded into the lagoon to identify the marine critters thriving in the

brackish waters. As an expert canoeist, Mary Ann helped quite a few novices

– some fearful, others excited – paddle through the unique tangle of the

Intracoastal’s mangroves.
