Annual Election

Election of officers for the Friends of Menominee County Library will take place at the meeting

on May 26th

at 7:00 p.m. in the Haywood Room at the library. The only qualification for any of

the above offices is that candidates must be a current member of the Friends of the Library.

Nominations for the following positions are open:

President

Vice President

Secretary

Treasurer

Director(s)

Writer’s Group: Words in Motion

Short stories, personal essays, memoirs, commentaries, poems . . . what is

your favorite way with words? Maybe you even have a novel in your head

or computer. Come to the Writers' Group for company on a

creative journey. Sessions are twice monthly on the second and fourth

Tuesdays at 6:30 PM in the Hayward Room at the MCL.

Participants write, share works, provide encouragement, and offer

suggestions when requested while having a good time along the way. No

long-term commitment is needed. Visit a time or two to see if there is

inspiration for your special expressions in written communication. Call

Ruth at 906-863-8334 for more information

Garden Committee

The Garden Committee is in the process of planning a spring sale and

clean-up day! Do you have items from your flower bed to share? Do you

have a new pair of work gloves you need to break in?

We are looking for individuals to help organize and work on gardening

events at the library. Come join us at the annual meeting or by leaving

your name and number at the circulation desk.

Maple Aire Community Center

Library Book Corner

President's Letter:

Does the library have a presence near where you live? Imagine my

surprise when I walked into the Maple Aire Community Center to find a

corner full of books! Pinned to the wall was a “Courtesy of the

Menominee County Library” sign asking you to return the book when

you’re finished. I often see small town lending libraries in movies and

thought it was a nice touch. I didn’t know we had them in Menominee

County. Quite an embarrassing thing for the president of the Friends of

the Library to admit!

These mini-libraries are often located near bookmobile stops, so our

library is able to refresh the selection of books on a regular basis. Local

residents also contribute their own items. The library does not own the

space; we are fortunate to have thoughtful individuals behind it all. We

need more than dedicated space, however. At the community center, for

example, we had an overabundance of older magazines and

encyclopedias. It takes just a few minutes to bring a little order to the collection and determine what else

might be needed. I understand that some of our members, for whatever reason, aren’t able to participate in

many of the events that we conduct throughout the year; spare time is often in short supply, and the

economic situation continues to be challenge. Still, I wonder if some of you might consider adopting one of

these mini-libraries as a way of helping our organization become more effective in the community. We need

you!

I was just asking someone the other day, “What happened to spring this year?” Hopefully it will have

arrived by the time you read this. Garden chores call, and seeds wait patiently to be planted. It is the same

here at the library. Spring is our annual meeting where officers are elected, goals set, and plans discussed.

Won’t you please join us to mark this occasion? No, there’s no need to bring your garden tools!

If you voted on the 24-Hour Road Patrol this spring at the Stephenson Township Hall, you may have seen

me helping in the election process. It was a long day, but it gave me some time to think about what would

happen if funding for our libraries disappeared. You should know that by law the Friends organization is not

allowed to conduct activities that are political in nature. Therefore, we depend upon you to speak up and let

your opinions be heard, whatever your political persuasion may be. Politics aside, we can certainly all agree

that literacy and access to information strengthen our ability to decide for ourselves. As a result, we

certainly can’t afford to take them for granted.

David Eagleton, President

Don’t forget our July 29 and 30 book sale.

We encourage people to donate hardcover and paperback

books, VHS tapes, DVDs, CD books, magazines, etc.
