Friends of the Phil Sponsorship and legacies Leeds Philharmonic Society, like many other cultural organisations, has at its heart a loyal band of Friends who act as a conduit for encouraging support, for keeping interested people informed about the Chorus and who help to raise much needed funds. The Friends help the Chorus to promote its performances and to bring new audiences to support its objective of promoting choral music to the public. The Friends’ membership consists of many loyal spouses, partners, friends and former members who regularly come to the Phil’s performances, and who welcome the chance to lend their support. In return they are kept informed of our activities by means of letters from the Friends’ Secretary and Chorus Newsletters. Joining the Friends of the Phil is a way of expressing a belief in the value of maintaining high standards of live choral music in Leeds. For further information about joining the Friends of the Phil please email Rosemary O’Dea via [email protected] or visit www.leedsphil.com. As a registered charity, Leeds Philharmonic Chorus does not receive government funding or any other endowments other than members’ subscriptions (which generally only cover music hire and the fees of its professional music team). The cost of performing great music continues to rise, and therefore, particularly in the case of its own- promotion concerts where it must meet all the costs of publicity, venue/orchestra hire and soloists, the Chorus relies on outside funding to help it continue to perform on a regular basis with the highest-quality orchestras, conductors and soloists. The Chorus is therefore very grateful for the generosity of its commercial and other sponsors, as well as to the people who leave it a legacy. Your association with the Phil may be as a singer past or present, or as an audience member who has enjoyed our concerts. Becoming a sponsor or leaving a legacy is a chance to show how much you have valued this association and what the Chorus has given to you, perhaps over many years. For nearly 150 years Leeds Philharmonic Chorus has been at the heart of choral music in Leeds. Your support, either as a sponsor or benefactor through legacy, will help to sustain the future of the Chorus for forthcoming generations of singers and concert-goers. Welcome to our 2018/19 choral season programme. This coming Season is a little more straightforward than the last, but still provides some superb music for our audiences. We are looking forward to working with our new chorus master, Joseph Judge, as he takes over the reins from Richard Wilberforce.

The first part of the season is focussed on the events that were still under way one hundred years ago: we are commemorating the end of the First World War via a joint concert with the Airedale Symphony Orchestra, conducted by John Anderson. This features Elgar's deeply moving Spirit of England, a choral version of the ‘Classic FM No1’ Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, together with Walton's Spitfire Prelude and Fugue and John Williams’ Hymn to the Fallen (from the film Saving Private Ryan) plus other pieces appropriate to the occasion. War is a dreadful thing but it has inspired some deeply moving music and the Phil's commemoration of the horrendous events of WW1 is a tribute to all those who gave their lives, not only in that conflict but in all wars.

For Christmas this year we are presenting Handel's Messiah in the special arrangement for brass band. We are really excited about performing alongside the world famous Black Dyke Band, together with the Halifax Choral Society and members of the Dortmund Chorus joining us from Leeds' twin city, under the baton

Christmas would not be complete without carols and for the third year we will be singing to the prisoners at Armley, as well as taking part in the regular Lord Mayor's Carols in the Town Hall. We are delighted to be taking part in this celebration, which is becoming part of the musical fabric of the City.

March 2019 allows us to showcase the Dvořàk Stabat Mater, promoted by the Leeds International Concert Season, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of David Hill.

The final concert of this season is our second in the LICS series and presents Elgar's Dream of Gerontius conducted by Simon Wight and performed with the Leeds Festival Chorus. We are looking forward to working once again with the Orchestra of Opera North to present this exceptional, visionary work.

To you, our audience, ‘Thank you’ for your past support… we look forward to welcoming you again this season.
