Many Internationals ask for a class where they can learn about the fundamentals about Christianity. This class is it! Pastor Dave will

discuss information that helps them understand American culture through Christian eyes and society as well as learn from reading,

Parent-Child Play Group 10:30 Teachers Rachel & Alix All levels 1/7/2013

This class meets each Monday morning for two delightful hours of play, learning English and music education for young International

children and their parent(s). Games, puzzles, sing-a-longs, basic musical instruments, crafts and other children's' activities are used,

along with English conversation, to create just the right environment for learning, laughter and friendship. Classes are held at Friendship

This class gives International students opportunities to practice their English listening and speaking skills by featuring a new English-

speaking expert each week. The experts make a presentation on many different topics relating to American occupations and culture.

Some of the experts are our very own International students! The experts ask, and respond to, questions from Internationals. Real

English conversation is the result. Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Bible Study - Jesus' Words & Actions 12:15 Teacher Becky Intermediate 1/7/2013

Referred to as the Fourth Gospel in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, the Book of John describes the public ministry of Jesus

Christ. It begins with the story of John the Baptist realizing Jesus is the Son of God and ends with the compelling account of Jesus'

miracles, public acceptance, persecution, death, resurrection from the dead and appearances after His resurrection. Classes are held

at Friendship House MSU.

Preparing for the TOEFL 1:00 Teacher Gladys Intermediate+ 1/7/2013

Friendship House MSU is pleased to offer its first-ever class to help students prepare for the TOEFL. Teacher Gladys has studied many

TOEFL preparation materials and tutored ten students preparing for the TOEFL over the last eight months. This class is limited to the

first 8 students who register. She will use the textbook, Building Skills for the TOEFL iBT by North Star Publishing (Helen Solorzano).

Students will need to purchase the text book in order to attend this class. Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Want to Write Better English? 4:00 Teachers Lyonel & Rich Intermediate + 1/7/2013

This class teaches "The Lively Art of Writing" using a textbook written by Lucille Vaughan Payne of the same title. Students learn to write

classic English essays (a short literary composition). Whether preparing for the TOEFL, writing a university admissions essay or composing

a research paper, essays are a key writing format in the English language. This class is meant for intermediate level and above

International students. The class is limited to 10 students. A student fee of $10 applies to cover the cost of the textbook. Classes

are held at Friendship House MSU.

Tuesday

Casual English Conversation 9:30 Teachers Tom & Kathy All levels 1/8/2013

This class is for International students who want to learn English conversation in a comfortable, relaxing and fun environment. Teachers

Tom and Kathy are both retired teachers with over 70 years of U.S. teaching experience between them. Students are encouraged

to laugh and learn in equal amounts. Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

English Conversation Outings 11:00 Teachers Tom & Kathy All levels 1/8/2013

The purpose of this class is get International students out into the communities of East Lansing, Michigan State University, Okemos and

Lansing and Okemos where English conversation is used in many different ways. Students get plenty of fresh air and exercise through

biking, hiking, walking, golf and other activities. Most classes involve an activity away from Friendship House (but some classes are held

inside due to weather). Classes begin and end at Friendship House MSU .

Start to Learn Real English! 1:00 Teachers Maryam, Paola & Sara Beginner 1/8/2013

This class provides opportunities to practice your reading and listening skills with a variety of interesting topics, especially information

about the U.S. You will enjoy improving your speaking skills by talking about different issues, getting feedback from teachers & students.

As a regular part of the class, we evaluate ourselves and try to correct our mistakes! Classes are held at University Lutheran Church,

just around the corner from Friendship House MSU.

Conversational Speaking Skills (Section 1) 4:00 Teacher Kathiann All levels 1/8/2013

This is a "skills and drills" workshop class. Students practice English speaking and listening. In addition, the class: (1) improves

pronunciation with phoneme-grapheme correspondence activities, and; (2) improves understanding with a morphological approach to

new vocabulary. This class is repeated in two other sections. Students only need to attend one class each week. Classes are held

at University Lutheran Church, just around the corner from Friendship House MSU. Classes are limited to 12 students.

Many Internationals just want the opportunity to practice friendly and casual English conversation, using topics that relate to their daily

lives and social situations. This class provides a weekly opportunity to do just that. Some International students and visiting scholars are

busy during daylight hours yet still want a chance to learn this kind of conversation in the early evening. Classes are held at Friendship

House MSU.

Wednesday

Boost Your English Vocabulary 9:30 Teacher Janine All levels 1/9/2013

In this class students learn useful vocabulary to impress their family, friends and even college professors. Your English speech will reach

an improved higher level by using academic words necessary to successful, professional communications. Students will also learn how to

pronounce and effectively use these words. Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Learning by Reading 10:30 Teacher Janine All levels 1/9/2013

The emphasis in this class is to read a book to improve all your English skills. You also will become more confident in speaking English in a

fun and relaxed environment. Students will memorize this new knowledge using creative and fun exercises. A $5 texbook fee applies.

Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Water Color Painting 10:30 Teacher Clyde All levels 1/9/2013

Watercolor is a painting method where paints are made of water-soluble pigments. Watercolors are usually transparent and appear

luminous. In East Asia, watercolor painting is often called brush or scroll painting. Finger painting with watercolors originated in China.

Teacher Clyde is a professional watercolorist whose work has been exhibited and sold at many different art venues. This class is

limited to 10 students. A student fee of $40 applies to cover the costs of painting materials - scholarships are available. Classes are held

at Friendship House MSU .

Learning English 12:00 Teacher Ken Intermediate 1/9/2013

Internationals sometimes think that learning English is an extremely challenging experience. But, the truth is that learning and using

English in conversation can be a fun, rewarding and greatly interesting thing to do. This class proves that English conversation can be

successfully learned, remembered and used during your stay in the United States. English vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation

are emphasized in this class. Students are given many opportunities each week to practice their "second" language. Classes are held

at University Lutheran Church, just around the corner from Friendship House MSU.

U.S. News & English Conversation 6:00 Teacher Dave Intermediate 1/9/2013

Many International students discover that studying the news in the U.S. -- newspapers, TV, news magazines, blogs and other online news

sources -- is a great way to learn English conversation and patterns, as well as a way to remain up to date on news and events around

the world and back in their home country. This class uses U.S. news sources as a means of teaching English in an easy, informal way.

Classes are held at Martin Luther Chapel in downtown East Lansing.

Bible Study - The Life & Words of Jesus 10:00 Teacher Clyde Intermediate 1/10/2013

Jesus is the central figure in the Christian faith because He died for the sins of everyone, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven.

His life on earth, some 2000 years ago, is well documented in the Bible. His words are there as are His teachings, miracles and promises.

This class will use the four Gospels of the Bible's New Testament to find, study and understand His words and life. Classes are held

at Friendship House MSU.

Enjoying English Experiences! 10:30 Teacher Mary Lou Intermediate 1/17/2013

The class features helpful topics with opportunities to practice speaking and writing in English. Editing assistance will be offered with

suggestions for fluency and TOEFL success. Teacher Mary Lou incorporates many forms of teaching media in her classes to maximize

the learning experience of International students. Fresh new topics this semester make this class especially stimulating.

Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Bible Study - Reading the Bible Together 1:00 Teacher Mary Lou Intermediate 1/17/2013

This class will explore God's Word in the Bible with emphasis on discovering peace and joy for our lives. Questions and discusssions

American Culture (Section 1) 12:30 Teacher Annette All levels 1/17/2013

Closely related to learning English is learning about American culture. Many English words and expressions are taken from the history,

diversity and unique traditions that make up American culture and society. This class helps International students better understand

and apply American culture to their daily lives. Students with young children are very welcome to attend. Classes are held at Friendship

Friendship House MSU.

Learning English with Music 1:00 Teacher Elaine All levels 1/17/2013

The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote that, "music is the universal language of all mankind." This takes on special

meaning at Friendship House MSU with students from nearly 20 countries during most semesters. Using English conversation, this class

explores the rich musical traditions of not just the U.S. but the countries of the International students attending this class. Classes are

held at University Lutheran Church, just around the corner from Friendship House MSU.

American Culture (Section 2) 2:00 Teacher Annette All levels 1/10/2013

Closely related to learning English is learning about American culture. Many English words and expressions are taken from the history,

Bible Study - Gospel of John 7:00 Teacher Dick Intermediate 1/10/2013

This class reviews the Book of John, the fourth and last of the New Testament Gospels of the Christian Bible. The author is considered

to be John the Apostle, one of the twelve original followers of Jesus Christ. In addition to being about Jesus' life and ministry on

earth, the book also discusses religious issues at the time it was written (about 90 A.D.). Classes are held at Friendship House MSU .

Friday

Mom's Bible Study 9:30 Teacher Intermediate 1/4/2013

Busy Moms need a chance to get out of the house or apartment and experience fellowship with other Moms. This Bible study gives

them the chance to do just that every Friday morning. Supervised child care in a great play room is available while Moms meet together

and share study and conversation. Internationals are welcome to attend this weekly class. Rides to St. Luke Lutheran Church from

Friendship House MSU are available to all students who register for this class. Classes are held at St. Lutheran Church.

Crazy English Idioms! 10:30 Teacher Jodi Intermediate 1/4/2013

Idioms are some of the most challenging, yet fun, features of the English language. Idioms -- also known as slang or figures of speech --

are expressions consisting of a combination of words that have a figurative (not literal) meaning. There are an estimated 25,000 idioms in

the English language. In this class students will learn about many common idioms, how they are pronounced and how to use them.

Classes will be held at Friendship House MSU.

International Spouse Connection 1:00 Teachers Jing & Dana All levels 1/4/2013 Teachers Dana & Jing All levels 1/4/2013

ISC (International Spouse Connection) is a group for, and organized by, International spouses. They share their cultures, life stories

and interests. Spouses practice English while talking about different topics every week. All International spouses and all conversation

levels are welcome. Classes are held at Friendship House MSU.

Bible Study - Book of Faith 1:00 Intermediate 1/4/2013

This class is an interactive English language review and discussion of key passages in the Bible. The comfortable, casual, friendly and

dynamic atmosphere openly invites International students to participate. The class is also open to members of the University Lutheran

Church congregation. This is a gathering that is helpful to both people curious about Christianity as well as those who are experienced

Christians. Classes are held at University Lutheran Church, just around the corner from Friendship House MSU.

Saturday

Bible Study - Gospel of Luke 10:00 Teacher Peter Intermediate 1/5/2013

This class reviews the Gospel of Luke, the fourth and longest book of the Christian New Testament Bible. Like the other three Gospels, the

book of Luke is an account of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. The author of this gospel is Luke the Evangelist; he is also known as

"the physician." As translated into English, Luke is a beautiful example of English writing and shows the global reach of Christianity,

more than two thousand years ago as well as today. Classes will be held at Friendship House MSU.

Homework Helpers 10:00 Teacher Flora All levels 1/5/2013

This is a two-hour period each Saturday morning that provides homework assistance and English conversation for International youth.

In many instances, parents attend the English or Bible study held at the same time and bring their elementary, middle or high school

youth for homework assistance. The teacher has exceptional English proficiency, patience and are very welcoming. Classes are

held at Friendship House MSU.

English Conversation, Vocabulary, Pronunciation 10:00 Teacher Maxine Intermediate 1/5/2013

In this class, English conversation is approached through attention to vocabulary, pronunciation and American culture. Traditions and

special observances unique to American life and society are also highlighted. This class emphasizes student speaking, sharing,

comparing and contrasting what they see and experience in the U.S. with their home countries. This is a good class for Internationals

whose work, academic or child care schedules make it hard for them to attend Friendship House classes during the week. Classes are

be held at Friendship House MSU.

Sunday

Dinner & Church Service

Martin Luther Chapel in downtown East Lansing offers a free dinner for MSU students, including Internationals, followed by a short

church service. Dinner starts at 5:30 pm. The Chapel bus stops at Friendship House MSU beforehand at 5:15 pm to pick up any

Internationals who wish to attend and will return students to Friendship House afterwards. All Internationals are invited and welcome

to attend.

English Conversation Partners AvailableEnglish Conversation Partners (Tutoring)

Friendship House has many volunteer tutors willing to assist International students with their English conversation on a one-on-one

basis. While we are pleased to have many volunteer English-speakers available, our supply of tutors is limited; in order to be fair,

partners are assigned according to first-come-first-served. All English levels are considered. All English Conversation Partners must

first be assigned before the first meeting and the tutor and student will arrange their own meeting schedule. If interested, please
