Advent Action
The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very
works I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent
me. (John 5:36)
Jesus is answering questions about the testimony of John the
Baptist, who he describes as a “burning and shining light” that
gave hope for a while. But then he continues “I have a testimony
greater than John, the works I am doing testify that the father has sent me. “Jesus says
“I am not asking you to just believe my words, look at my actions or the works that I
do.” Actions speak for themselves, whereas words can be debated and interpreted
on a theoretical level.
Advent is a time set aside for reflection, for waiting in hope for the birth of Christ
anew in our hearts; therefore, Advent is also a time of action. Most often we do not
think ourselves into new ways of living, rather we live ourselves into new ways of
thinking. Jesus tells us “See the testimony of my ministry, ok, now follow me.” Try
this and you will see for yourself that it is true.
Soren Kierkegaard used the phrase ‘Leap of faith” to describe moments of encounter
with the living God on the spiritual journey. In taking that leap from the status quo of
what is comfortable in order to cross a line based on what one believes are kingdom
values—then and only then can we hear in a new way and really believe what we say
we believe.
What leap of faith do you need to take this Advent? Is your leap of faith to start a
prayer practice that transforms your Advent from mainly a count down to Christmas
to a time of growth and renewal? Is your leap of faith to take time for yourself,
despite the demands of the world, simply because you are a beloved child of God
saved by grace. Maybe this Advent in particular you are being called to speak truth to
power to those who profess values very different from the kingdom values of Jesus.
Maybe this Advent you can risk volunteering at Feeding Brookings, the Harvest Table,
or another local ministry.
Advent is a time of waiting, reflection, and hope; therefore Advent is a time of action.

Add a hat, a pair of gloves, a scarf or other warm item to
the Christmas Tree by the Conference room. Items will be
distributed to those in need in January.
Page 2 December 2018 The Insight
From the President My dad loved Christmas. My brother and I remember mom and dad “discussing”
it after dad had gone overboard buying Christmas presents. As I have mentioned
in previous columns, my dad died when I was in high school. It was around 6 months
after his death that my sister-in-law joined my family. A few years later my oldest
niece was born. Then a few years later my youngest niece was born. At first it was
easy to buy my nieces toys or games as gifts. As they got older though, they started
requesting more adult presents and it got harder to find the gifts that they wanted. I
often ended up resorting to getting them gift cards. It was also hard to buy gifts for
my mom, brother, and sister-in-law because they simply didn’t want anything.
Often, my mom or my brother would mention ending the Christmas gift exchange
since it was getting so hard to buy gifts for each other. I said that we should keep
exchanging gifts. If for no other reason we needed to keep it going to keep dad’s memory alive because, like I said,
dad loved Christmas so much. After talking about it for a few years, about 5 years ago my mom finally put her
foot down and said “no more - we will stop exchanging gifts”. I fought tooth and nail to keep it going because dad
liked Christmas so much. But I lost that fight.
The first year we didn’t exchange gifts it seemed odd, and I missed it. But as time has passed I have grown to like
the fact that we no longer exchange gifts. I thought we had to keep exchanging gifts to keep my dad’s memory
alive. I was wrong. Instead of hurrying from store to store making sure I got the right gift for the right person,
remembering to get a gift receipt, and a thousand other things, I have more time to reflect on the good times with
dad. I also have more time to sit back and consider the greatest gift God gave all of us with the birth of his son.
This is, after all, what Christmas is about.
What things are we doing here at Ascension that we are hanging onto because of tradition, because it is easier to
keep doing the same thing than it is to change, or because “that is the way we have always done it?” As I
discovered with exchanging Christmas gifts, sometimes we must make some changes for things to be better.

Ascension Mission Diversity Travel Experience Award
The Ascension Mission Diversity Travel Experience Award has been established to foster
mission/service experiences, either domestic (cross cultural) and/or international, to those in
need in the United States and developing countries. This award is offered annually to
financially assist those participating in such experiences. A selection committee will determine the recipient(s) and
the amount of the award. Selection committee decisions will be final.
Applications for the award may be picked up at the church office during regular office hours and must be returned
to the church office by January 31st. Awards will be announced March 1st.
The recipient(s) of this award shall be based on the following criteria:
Use this award to participate in a domestic (cross cultural) or international mission/service project experience

outreach program deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
First preference will be given to active members of Ascension Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. If there are
no Ascension Lutheran Church members who apply, then members from SDSU University Lutheran Center
who apply may be considered. Preference will be given those who show/explain how this financial assistance
will be beneficial to them.

Upcoming Milestones:
3rd Grade: Bibles, January 6, 2019
4-year-olds: Understanding Worship, January 26, 2019
Ascension Lutheran Church is committed to the vision God has placed before us of passing on faith
in Jesus Christ. One way in which we do this is through Miles stones Ministry. Milestones are
identified moments that are right for a child's next step in his or her faith journey. By equipping
families with education about the milestone, lifelong faith formation is developed!

A Note About Advent & Christmas Eve
Offerings:
All offerings in special offering envelopes marked "Advent Offering" or
"Christmas Eve Offering" as well as all loose checks & cash from
special services will support Ascension's designated benevolences. Our
designated benevolences include: Habitat for Humanity, Luther
Seminary, Lutheran Social Services, Lutherans Outdoors, My Neighbor
Program, Native American Ministries, Seminary Student Scholarships,
St. Dysmas Prison Congregation, and University Lutheran Center. Any
offerings in regular Sunday envelopes will go in the general fund.
We had a very productive informational meeting on November 18th between services and are planning on having
another opportunity soon for those who could not attend. A lot of information was shared at our meeting. Below
is a copy of the hand out from November 18th. If you have any questions, please contact Naomi Stout
([email protected]) or call the church office and check your update for information on upcoming meetings.
We look forward to more conversations about how to move forward.
Organ Information
The Organ Selection Committee (OSC) has been working diligently for the last two months on gathering
information about replacement options for our dying Johannus Organ. We met July, started gathering information
and a week later took two trips to Sioux Falls and Fargo to hear organs.
After all this information and discussion, the OSC recommends that the congregation buy a pipe organ from
Nordlie’s for $190,528.50.
Here are the reasons why:
1. A pipe organ is the fiscally responsible choice:
Options:
Digital Organ Pipe Organ
Upfront cost $70,000.00 $190,528.50
20 year cost $140,000.00
40 year cost $280,000.00
50 year cost $10,000.00
50 year total cost $490,000.00 $201,000.00
2. We are a strong singing congregation that appreciates corporate worship. Singing has been an integral part
of Lutheran worship, and a pipe organ of this caliber would better support our worship here at Ascension.
3. This is a real instrument, blowing real air, through real pipes. Real air moving through the pipes brings
about thoughts of the Holy Spirit moving through us as instruments of God’s grace.
4. This organ would be a work of art, hand crafted and customized to our church. It is really a part of our
architecture--the built space in which we worship together. It will look like it was always meant for
Ascension--because it will be uniquely constructed for us.
Minimal maintenance would be needed on this organ. The organ they proposed to build for us doesn’t have
any reed pipes. These are the pipes that need the most attention. They have small moving parts that wear
out and need tuning. We would not have any of those kinds of pipes and so the maintenance on this organ
would be minimal.
