Almost immediately, I began to educate myself in the ardent artistry that is Lutherie. I took classes from some of the best builders at Martin. Tracy Cox, my inlay art mentor and the person whom donated the majority of the wood for this project, taught me anything is possible with building and inlaying. He is the greatest inlay artist I know. Tracy now runs his own studio out of Upper State NY (www.inlaydesignstudio.com) where he helped inlay some of my designs for the Roses guitar. Ed Golden taught me the precision and geometry of guitar construction. Danny Brown and Emily Meixell ensured the angles on the neck pre-fit and final fit were perfect. With the help of Tom Dougherty and his team at TKL guitar cases, a custom case was designed and donated to compliment this one of a kind instrument. Shortly after construction was underway, I had a new goal for the project. I made it my duty to attain 65 celebrity signatures to go conjointly with the 65 roses on the guitar. Chris Martin was the first to sign and help add validity to the project. It would be a long, draining 4 months before a letter made it through to someone famous willing to sign in support. Willie Nelson said he would sign the guitar top plaques. This was the true start of the adventure. When backstage with Willie Nelson, my father and I met with the owner of the local event center (Sands Event Center in Bethlehem, PA). His name is Tom and he loved the guitar so much he made it his goal to help fill up the plaques. Tom and his security team made me feel at home and aided my pursuits with approximately 20 signatures before a quiescence of meet and greets halted their efforts. I was on my own for the remainder of the “65” signatures. Each celebrity got to see the progression over the year it took to build. It was a pleasure to eventually allow some of the celebrities to play the finished product. The biggest critic of all was David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Him, his wife, and son all took the time to talk with me and truly understand what I was doing. David looked me right in the eye and told me, “ this guitar is dead on, it’s perfect.” He was astonished of its beauty and playability and they were all happy to be a part of it. It was an experience that will always stick with me. I traveled across the country for signatures making it as far as Anaheim, CA for the NAMM show. The quest for signatures was completed when Anne and Nancy Wilson of Heart were the icing on the 65-signature cake. This adventure will be one that sticks with me for the rest of my life and am proud to have taken what was an idea to what it has become. -Justin Jacobs

From an early age, I developed a tenacious love for making things and understanding how things work.

Around the same time I developed a love for music after finding the guitar my Father brought home from the

Navy, hidden away in the back closet. A continuing devotion for engineering and craftsmanship lead me to

continue this passion into undergraduate studies. After graduating college I was interning as an Engineer at a

nearby foundry. My Father called with news of CF Martin & Co.’s pursuit of growth in its workforce. I

didn’t hesitate to take an entry-level position to get my foot in the door.

Almost immediately, I began to educate myself in the ardent artistry that is Lutherie. I took classes

from some of the best builders at Martin. Tracy Cox, my inlay art mentor and the person whom donated the

majority of the wood for this project, taught me anything is possible with building and inlaying. He is the

greatest inlay artist I know. Tracy now runs his own studio out of Upper State NY

(www.inlaydesignstudio.com) where he helped inlay some of my designs for the Roses guitar. Ed Golden

taught me the precision and geometry of guitar construction. Danny Brown and Emily Meixell ensured the

angles on the neck pre-fit and final fit were perfect. Mark Smith is the guitar action/setup guru. He

enlightened me on the philosophy and importance of a proper setup, especially for the Roses guitar. With the

help of Tom Dougherty and his team at TKL guitar cases, a custom case was designed and donated to

compliment this one of a kind instrument.

Shortly after construction was underway, I had a new goal for the project. I made it my duty to attain

65 celebrity signatures to go conjointly with the 65 roses on the guitar. Chris Martin was the first to sign and

Man builds guitar to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis Author: Meghan Packer , Reporter, [email protected] Sharing Services Man builds guitar to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis NAZARETH, Pa. - Justin Jacobs has had a passion for guitars since he was young. Now 25, he doesn't only play the guitar, he builds them. His most recent project has a special purpose. Jacobs calls it a 65 Roses guitar. "When kids were younger they couldn't pronounce Cystic Fibrosis so they'd say 65 roses or it sounded like that and now they actually use it as a tool to get kids to say it properly," he explained. With the help of some friends, it took Jacobs a year to design and build the 65 Roses guitar. Much of the work on it was done at Golden Guitar Gallery in Nazareth, where Jacobs spoke to 69 News Thursday. Jacobs was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was three. It's a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. "You don't realize how terrible it really is until you get older," said Jacobs. "It's something that slowly wears down on you and eventually catches up with you. It's not curable right now." Jacobs wants to change that and help find a cure for and raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. He has gotten the signatures of many celebrities on guitar tops that he plans to frame and auction off with the 65 Roses guitar. He is trying to line up famous musicians to play at a benefit where he'll auction off the items to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. "When I met Willie Nelson that was really cool," he said. "Peter Frampton, that was a really good one, I liked him." "Jay Leno and Kevin Eubanks." Other celebrity signatures he has include those of Cheech and Chong, Dwight Yoakam, and Slash. He has met many of the big names at Sands Event Center. "The more awareness we spread about it the better," said Jacobs. "That's who I'm really doing it for, for those who are still alive and those who haven't made it." Strumming for the Cause November 7th, 2013 by Melissa B. | Leave a response

A couple weeks ago, we had the opportunity to make guitar picks to help support a wonderful cause. One of our customers, Justin Jacobs, has a passion for guitars and has recently been working on a very special project…building a guitar that he has christened the 65 Roses Guitar. Jacobs himself was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at the age of three, and he explains that kids that age have trouble saying “cystic fibrosis” and it ends up being pronounced like “sixty five roses.”

Because Cystic Fibrosis is still non-curable, Jacobs wanted to take action to help find a cure. He has combined his musical passion with his desire for change to come up with the unique idea of building this special guitar to auction off. In addition, he has gotten the signatures of many celebrities who support his cause, and he will be framing those and auctioning them off as well. He is also currently working on a musical line-up for a benefit concert where he’ll auction off the items and collect the funds to donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Our contribution to Justin’s project was to donate custom guitar picks that he can hand out to help spread awareness about his project and what he is trying to accomplish.
