Issue No. 19 - May to July 2017

Welcome to the 19th edition of the Newark and Southwell Deanery Newsletter.

From Canon Mark Adams

Wind Power

I wonder where you were when Storm Doris hit a few weeks ago? I was fortunate to find myself on a plane flying

to Cornwall for a course! Fortunately, we were ahead of the worst of the storm – though it was very windy when

we landed. I only heard the reports from home of trees in the road that

had come down!

We have always sought to harness the power of the wind; as the old

windmills and modern wind turbines which are dotted around our area

remind us. But also, know that it can be unpredictable, hardly a breath of

wind one day, blowing a gale the next and moving from one direction to

another.

The ancient Hebrews saw such a strong connection between the wind and the Spirit of God that they had the

same word for both – Ruach (though that is about the only bit of ancient Hebrew that I know!). It’s an idea that

Jesus picks up when he is speaking to Nicodemus – one of the religious leaders who has come to see him in

secret:

“The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know

where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

This reminds us that following Jesus should be both powerful and unpredictable, an

adventure where we don’t quite know where we will end up. So, we are delighted that the

Diocese is launching a new initiative to work within our deanery later this year and are

looking forward to welcoming Revd Alison Jones and the (soon to be Revd) Anthony Dixon

to lead it. You can find out more by Googling “Mid County Rural Resource Church” and

following the link on southwell.anglican.org, but here is a flavour of what it says:

“The new congregation will include people of all ages, though with a distinctive focus on

nurturing faith among families, children and young people. It will seek to create a distinctive culture and

approach in connecting with people who do not presently engage in the life of the church … it will meet in

a dedicated space yet to be identified within a rural setting somewhere in the centre of the deanery. The

venue, which might be a barn or similar, will provide a different sort of meeting space for a variety of

activities, events and worship services.”

Please pray for Alison, her husband Freddie and their children George, Monty, Flora and Arthur as they prepare

to move into the Deanery; also for Anthony and his wife Amy as they also move and Ant is ordained in July. We

hope that they will be able to visit different churches across the Deanery in due course, so I know you will give

them a warm welcome.

All this should mean exciting and unpredictable times ahead, so above all please pray that the wind of the Spirit

will blow through this area; in the life of our churches and this new project.

With best wishes

Join the global wave of prayer 25th May - 4th June

“I cannot remember in my life anything that I ’ve been involved in where I have sensed so clearly the work of the Spir it.”

- Archbishop Justin Welby

How often have we said these words? Countless? And I suspect not really always having a full understanding of the meaning of the phrase, certainly this is so in my experience. It has meant slightly different things to me from school exam results to even wrestling with an understanding of the Epistle of James. However, Thy Kingdom Come is not only a petition from the Lord’s Prayer but is the title of an international and ecumenical prayer initiative held between Ascension Day and Pentecost (or Whitsun in old currency). I recently had the privilege of hearing the Archbishop of the Province of South-East Asia who talked about Thy Kingdom Come in his setting; it is international. The diocese is asking us all in our own settings to get involved with the Thy Kingdom Come events starting on Ascension Day May 25th (there is a prayer meeting in St Mary Magdalene Church, Newark led by Archdeacon David) and then finishing on Saturday June 3rd with a picnic and service at the Minster in Southwell. Churches and communities are asked to hold events for themselves during this time to encourage a wave of prayer for the world’s needs and to draw in more disciples. Our Deanery event will be on May 27th in Caunton. There are many resources for churches to plan their responses to the idea so you do not have to start everything from scratch. It could be as simple as holding a longer prayer session after a mid-week service or you may want to open your church up for the day, especially

if you have the Open Church banner readily available. The web site for Thy Kingdom Come is easily accessible from which ideas and suggestions of what to do can be taken. So please do become engaged with the idea and pray for God’s Kingdom here with us. I am planning to hold a day of prayer, along with our Methodist friends in Balderton which will cover a number of the themes suggested. The plan would be for the church to be open most of the day and involve bible readings, reflection and prayer during each hour. It is being planned but all the details are yet to be finalised. What I must remember is to let Jubilee House know so that the map of what is going on in the diocese is flagged up for everyone. It would be good for the deanery to have a lot of pins on the map identifying our response to Thy Kingdom Come. This deanery has been blessed recently with the number of appointments to fill our many vacancies. In conversation with Bishop Paul we reflected upon the journey the deanery has taken in the last few years. There are still pastoral matters to be finalised, legal hurdles to clear and changes to settle but it is good to have a full chapter. The recent installations of David and Paul and anticipated arrival of Alison for the new church in the deanery means we have been given the resources to support the diocesan vision of Growing Disciples Younger, Wider and Deeper. Let us respond by being committed to action by becoming involved with Thy Kingdom Come this Ascensiontide. Michael Wilson – Deanery Lay Chair.

PRACTICAL TRAINING THROUGH CHIPPS: CHURCHES IN PASTORAL PARTNERSHIP

Young Minds Matter! Mental Health : Children & Younger People

Saturday June 10th 2017 10am - 4pm

Toton Methodist Church NG9 6GA Cost: £15.00 (bring your own lunch)

The aim of this workshop is to provide an understanding of the mental health issues that may affect children and young people, and includes information on how we can support them. It is suitable for parents, family carers, those involved in children/youth work, and pastoral care. The health of our minds determines how we feel. Children and young people’s minds are developing at a rapid rate as they grow and change. These natural stages affect their behaviour and emotions, and the way they experience the world. Relationships and interactions in their early years have a powerful influence on the development of chil-dren’s mental health and emotional well-being. Mental health problems relating to children & young people are more common than you might think - three children in every classroom have a mental health problem. However, mental illness is something most peo-ple find hard to talk about. WD Why should the Church be concerned about mental health? At least one in ten children will have a significant mental health problem at some point in their lives. The church has always been called to work with the marginalised in society. Those with mental health problems of-ten have additional social problems to face, including family relationship breakdown, social isolation and being the victim of abuse or violence. Sadly the incidence of young people experiencing mental health issues has increased. One in Four (26%) young people in the UK experience suicidal thoughts. ChildLine (UK) has revealed that it held 34,517 counselling sessions in 2013, with children who talked about suicide, a 116 per cent increase since 2011. Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years, The number of children and young people who have presented at A&E with a psychiatric condition have more than doubled since 2009. 55% of children who have been bullied later develop depression as adults. (Young Minds is the UK’s leading charity committed to improving the emotional well-being and mental health of children and young people)

My name is Paul Franklin and I've been appointed as

the new team vicar of Christ Church, Newark with my

wife Liz - who is also ordained and has Permission to

Officiate.

I'm thirty-eight and have been working full-time in

Christian ministry for many years. I grew up in

Nuneaton (near Coventry) and after university and

teacher training I moved to Whitstable to work as a

Youth Minister for a team ministry of six churches. It

was a really enjoyable and fruitful time for me. My

main role was to pastor the weekly youth

congregation that was made up of approximately

thirty teenagers who did church in a fun and informal

way. I stayed there for almost ten years before moving

to Wycliffe Hall to fully train as a vicar. That's where I

met my wife Liz, who was also in ordination training,

and we married in 2013, shortly before starting our

curacies in Blackheath and Kidbrooke (South-East

London).

In London – as part of my curacy – I managed a

Christian youth and community centre with a cafe,

meeting spaces, hall, football pitch, skate ramp and

offices. It was a really exciting project to be part of

and has been a great opportunity to connect with

people who have no previous experience of church. I

was also heavily involved at a local parish church (St

Nicholas, Kidbrooke) where I would preach, lead

services, run the youth club and everything else that

you might expect! I love reading, watching TV and

playing some sports just for fun. I also like to write

when I get the chance: I'm particularly interested in

writing novels for teenagers..

Liz is originally from Suffolk and she has a background

in social work – previously working in mental health

services. She has also worked with people with

learning disabilities and elderly and vulnerable

adults. She loves reading books and baking cakes,

and is offering her ministry to Christ Church on a

voluntary basis.

We've had a great welcome here from the church, the

local community and the wider deanery and diocese,

and we're really excited to be here on the Hawtonville

estate thinking, praying, planning and networking as

we try to work out how to take things forward with

mission and ministry in the area. We look forward to

working with you all and seeing what God has in store

for us as a parish, deanery and diocese!

God brings good things out of confusion

From The Benefice of West Trent (formerly The West Trent Group of Parishes). On Sunday 18th June we are holding a service of celebration at St Peter's Thurgarton to mark becoming the Benefice of West Trent (Bleasby, Halloughton, Hoveringham, Morton, Rolleston, Thurgarton & Upton). Bishop Paul is coming to assist us in this and at the same time baptise (1) and confirm (5). The 7 Parishes previously constituted 2 Benefices suspended some years ago and will retain each PCC whilst delegating certain tasks to a Benefice Council. There have been difficult periods for the Group since the suspensions, but through those times of lack of clarity a wonderful sense of working together and collective purpose have emerged. This is what we are celebrating, God bringing good things out of confusion. No one can see very far into the future, but by working together we are stronger together. Encouragement, affirmation and mutual respect are qualities of love that are a gift from above to be nurtured. Rural churches may have small numbers but have a large contribution to make in their local communities. What village is better without one?

Dear Friends, This is a very belated hello from me. I’m Mandy Cartwright and I’m rector of the East Trent Group of churches, just north of Newark and squashed between the river Trent and Lincolnshire. All of our villages are strung out either side of the Gainsborough road and I’m finding my way around them now, though that’s nothing to boast about really because I’ve been in this post since December. I must say, the springtime driving is a delight after the dark foggy journeys from one carol service to another. I am still surprised to be here. I was born and grew up in Nottingham and I love the city. My last post was in Bilborough and Strelley (two outer city estates and one small village) and when I knew it was time to think about moving on I assumed it would be to another urban situation. However, years ago I was told If you want to find out if God’s got a sense of humour, tell him your plans, and I guess that’s true. A number of chance meetings, surprise comments and conversations led to the thought of East Trent settling itself in my mind. I learnt more about the Ignatian idea of consolation because I was so energised (if surprised) by the whole idea. Thanks to good advice, informal meetings and an interview which left very little unasked, here I am and I’m very pleased to be so. I’m living in Collingham with my husband Phil and we’ve got three grown up children who live in York, Manchester and London, so we’ve got great cities to visit. I’ve joined the Pilates class in the village, which is one of the best decisions of my life, it’s really good exercise and so I look forward to Tuesday evenings. I also find time to spend with family and friends, do lots of reading and as much daydreaming as I can manage.

I’m getting used to the traffic thundering past our house constantly, no street lights, stars in the sky and needing to travel all the time. I’m really encouraged by the enthusiastic and friendly welcome I’ve received. Since January we’ve been having monthly meetings for everyone involved in leading worship which is really encouraging and five adults are preparing for confirmation. There are lots of opportunities for ministry in the four schools in the group, for outreach to the community in villages where the church is the only public facility and also for pastoral ministry. At the end of April I’m attending the Arthur Rank Rural Ministry Course, so I hope to learn more about where I am and how to focus some of the discoveries I’m making. Thank you to everyone in the Newark and Southwell deanery for your welcome and encouragement and I look forward to getting to know everyone better as we work together. God bless you all. Mandy.

Deanery Prayer

Most merciful God,

our creator and redeemer,

in baptism you called us

to be members,

one of another as witnesses

to your saving power.

Grant that, united in your love,

and confident in your promise

to be with us always,

we may be led by your Holy Spirit,

to be your living body in this deanery,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
