Most of the people who hurt kids are people the kid knows, including people in their families and bullies at school, but a few of these people are strangers. Here are 4 tips to keep children safer when they are out. 1. Think aware - Be aware that there are some people who are not as nice as they seem. 2. Think smart - Be smart when you are out and about. Notice who is nearby and what is happening around you. 3. Think ahead - Work out with your parents, carers and teachers what you would do in an emergency situation. 4. Think first - If you are feeling unsafe, then look for a Safety House or business, a friend's house, stay with your friends, look for a trusted adult, go into a shop, super- market or somewhere where there are lots of people, or, if you have one, use your mobile to get help. Remember too that most adults are trustworthy. Look to see if there are a couple of adults, or someone with a child who you can go and stand close to.

31 May 2017 Western Australian Day A reminder to all our families that Monday 5 June is the Western Australian Day public holiday when we are reminded of the day when WA was founded. It was on 1 June 1829 that the State’s first Euro-pean settlers, men, women and children, completed their long sea journey from Britain to the Swan River Colony. They arrived on board the Parmelia under the command of Captain James Stirling and had

their first view of mainland Western Australia. Although wintry conditions prevented them from stepping ashore on the mainland until sometime later, Western Australian Day, former-ly known as Foundation Day, has since been recognised on this date.

Western Australian Day is a time when we pay tribute to all those who came before us and to the citizens of today who are building our future. It is also a time, when we can join in putting community endeavour on show in a spirit of pride and appreciation for the efforts and achievements of our fellow citizens, past and present.

It is a day of significance and pride to all who call Western Australia home. Students re-turn to school on Tuesday 6 June. We wish all our families a safe and relaxing long week-end break.

Keeping Safe Australia is mostly a very safe place to live. Every now and then something happens that makes us feel unsafe or uncomfortable and we have to count on what we have learnt to keep us safe. At Sacred Heart we do the Protective Behaviours program with children from the ELC to Year 6 and our OSHC children too. This program has two main themes: “We all have the right to feel safe all of the time” and “We can talk with someone about any-thing.” Parents can help at home by having conversations with their children, reminding them that there are some people around who can be a danger, particularly to kids. Most of the people who hurt kids are people the kid knows, including people in their families and bullies at school, but a few of these people are strangers. Here are 4 tips to keep children safer when they are out. 1. Think aware - Be aware that there are some people who are not as nice as they

seem. 2. Think smart - Be smart when you are out and about. Notice who is nearby and what

is happening around you. 3. Think ahead - Work out with your parents, carers and teachers what you would do in

an emergency situation. 4. Think first - If you are feeling unsafe, then look for a Safety House or business, a

friend's house, stay with your friends, look for a trusted adult, go into a shop, super-market or somewhere where there are lots of people, or, if you have one, use your mobile to get help.

Remember too that most adults are trustworthy. Look to see if there are a couple of adults, or someone with a child who you can go and stand close to.

Pentecost Sunday – 4 June Pentecost is often called "the birthday of the Church." Christ had prom-ised His Apostles that He would send His Holy Spirit, and, on Pentecost, they were granted the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Apostles began to preach the Gospel in all of the languages that the Jews who were gath-ered there spoke, and about 3,000 people were converted and baptized that day.

In preparation for their Confirmation, Year 6 students discuss the gifts of the Holy Spirit that they received at baptism and will have strengthened through Confirmation. Pentecost is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on these gifts and to see how you use them in your everyday life.

Wisdom is the gift of knowing the right choices to make to live a holy life. The gift of wisdom helps you to avoid the things that could lead you away from God. Understanding is the gift of comprehension, or the ability to grasp the meaning of the teachings of the Church. The gift of understanding helps you be tolerant and sympathetic of others. It helps you sense when someone is hurting or in need of compassion. Right Judgment, or Counsel, is the gift of prudence. The gift of right judgment helps you make choices to live as a faithful follower of Jesus. Courage, or Fortitude, is the gift that helps you stand up for your faith in Christ. The gift of courage helps you overcome any obstacles that would keep you from practicing your faith. Knowledge is the gift of knowing and enlightenment. The gift of knowledge enables you to choose the right path that will lead you to God. It encourages you to avoid obstacles that will keep you from him. Reverence, or Piety, is the gift of confidence in God. This gift of reverence inspires you to joyfully want to serve God and others. Wonder and Awe, or Fear of the Lord is the gift of wonder and respect that encourages you to be in awe of God. The gift of wonder and awe moves you to so love God that you do not want to offend him by your words or actions.

Assistant Principal

Tomorrow (Thursday 1 June) the funeral Mass of Thanksgiving for Debbie Gutta, wife of Peter, mother of Anthony and Madeline will take place in the Church. Many staff will be attending the Mass therefore var-ious adjustments will be made around the school. We thank you for your understanding.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

THE CANTEEN WILL BE CLOSED TOMORROW. Children will have to bring their own lunch.

The Oval will be opened for car parking for the funeral. Parents entering to and from the school are asked to be patient and respectful.

And from Mrs Mercer (School Chaplain)

In the Church tomorrow, I will be leaving some pamphlets and booklets on Grief, Loss, Anxiety and De-pression Please feel free to take these if you know someone who would benefit from this infor-mation. These pamphlets will then be left in the foyer of school office for you to take. At these times most people do not know what to say and so avoid the person who needs it most. Sometimes just letting them know you are there can be a help. You don't have to say much, in fact it's very hard to talk when you are experiencing grief. Being there for someone, without saying anything can be a comfort in it-self. I will be at the church tomorrow. Please also know that I am available for your children and your family if you need support.

Communicare’s MyTime Group is a coffee and chat morning held every Wednesday to support parents and/or carers of children with special needs.

Next Wednesday there is a FREE workshop on Meal time difficul-

ties: causes and strategies. At any time of life we can have a diffi-

cult relationship with food and mealtimes. For example, toddlers

are picky or fussy with their food because of their growing sense

of autonomy coupled with a drop in growth rate. Forming a good

relationship with food is vital, so it is important for care givers and

parents to manage mealtimes in a constructive way if our children

are experiencing difficulties in this area of their lives.
