‚From Bharata to Bartenieff – A Trans-cultural Movement Studies programme’ is a modular training programme specially conceived to impart specific experiential and analytical tools that enable understanding and working with the intricacies of movement and expression from a trans-cultural, trans-disciplinary perspective. Theoretical and practical framework: The practise of traditional Indian movement disciplines like dance, dance theatre and yoga reveals a profound insight into the multi-facetted functions of movement. Major movement analytical systems in the West like Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals provide tools to understand these functions. The programme puts together the practical, theoretical, scientific and artistic insights gained by Rajyashree Ramesh as movement art practitioner and movement science researcher during academic and studio application of integrating these movement systems in cross-cultural settings. Goal and target groups: With the aim of finally enabling certification, the programme targets movement practitioners looking for trans-cultural movement knowledge in an increasingly globalised world. The goal is to give participants analytical and practical tools that enable applying such knowledge in fields of individual interest – performance, choreography, pedagogy, therapy and/or academic pursuit. Faculty: Conceived and taught by: Rajyashree Ramesh (B.Sc, M.A., CLMA), Dancer/choreographer (Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dance theatre), Dance/Movement Educator, Yoga practitioner, Certified Laban Movement Analyst and research scholar. Advisory and prospective teaching faculty: Ed Groff (Laban Movement Analysis/Bartenieff Fundamentals), and select professionals with a trans-cultural focus from the fields of medicine/therapy, dance pedagogy and somatic studies. The structure: The modular year-long programme in three phases will be offered both in Berlin and India: Part 1 – Introductory Courses (three modules 2-3 days each or an 8-day intensive). Introduction to Laban’s movement categories Body, Space, Shape and Effort through the lens of Indian movement vocabulary and everyday movements. Part 2 – Immersion (three modules of 1 week each or 3-week intensive) Supported by a prospective guest faculty, this part intensifies the theoretical-practical aspects introduced in Part 1. Participants will learn to apply a thus enabled trans-cultural/trans-disciplinary understanding of movement to individual areas of interest. Part 3 – Project Application/Certification (individually designed weekend modules or two-week intensive). Participants develop and present individual application projects in the form of a written and practical assignment - requirement for certification. Note: The durations for Part 2 and 3 are currently approximate, depending finally upon target group requirements. Course languages will be English and/or German.
