From Blackboards to TabletsDo you remember your classrooms in school? Did they have a blackboard, overhead projector, whiteboard, iMac, or tablet? You probably remember classrooms full of color, bulletin boards, posters, and learning materials like markers, paper, and pencils.

Classrooms in the U.S. have advanced with technology and understanding of different learning styles, but in Tanzania, not much advancement has happened. Most classrooms have a blackboard, beat-up desks, no internet or technology. Students are taught through lecturing and notetaking. There is a textbook shortage and most students share, often a 1-book to 5-students ratio.

Southwood is partnering with Opportunity Education to implement their Quest Forward Learning Program at Uroki High School (sister church school). This program runs on the Amazon Fire Tablet ($40/Tablet) and features lessons called Quests. Each Quest is written by Tanzanian educators in English (required language) and focuses on specific topics in the Tanzanian required curriculum.

The Quests offer a different method of learning. Students engage in active, experiential learning. Teachers guide students not to simply seek the right answer, but instead work to create their own conclusions.

The Quest Forward Learning was implemented at another Tanzania Scholarship School called Mtakuja. When visiting these students, you can immediately see that they speak exceptional English, are more confident, and have developed critical thinking. They are also performing above their peers on the government standardized tests.

We are thankful for the Southwood Endowment Fund for giving a gift of $2,000 to install internet to Uroki High School plus all of the Christmas Giving Tree donations for tablets! As a church community, we are making student’s futures brighter!

Talk with GodPrayer is simply having a conversation with God. Some people have ideas of what they should or should not include in prayer. Perhaps God is more concerned that we just come to talk. Parents are always grateful to hear from their children, no matter what the conversation!

Try these simple ideas to help in your journey of prayer:

f Keep it simple—Don’t make prayers complicated. Talk with God as you are talking with a close friend.

f Make a prayer list—When you become aware of specific prayer requests, write them down so you can follow through when you tell someone you will ‘keep them in your prayers’.

f Use a prayer journal—Write down your prayers and thoughts as you pray. Reread them and see how God is active in your life in more ways than you realize!
