Rabbi’s Reflections…
Reflecting on the Acts of the Summer
in the Days of the New Year
As you may already know, through the
efforts of our Temple Chaverim,* this summer our chapel
was filled with beautiful, meaningful worship each and
every Friday evening and Saturday morning. Members of
our Temple family and the wider Jewish community
found our doors open to them for worship, learning and
communal connection each Shabbat morning.
Many a synagogue finds itself forced to follow a “reduced
summer schedule” while clergy are on vacation or volun-
teering at our camps. We can take great pride in our
community’s dedication to making sure that no one finds
our doors closed to them on Shabbat.
I want to thank all of our Temple Shalom Chaverim who
helped lead worship this summer: Shirley Bauer, Alissa
Okrent, Robin Katchen, Anita Dickman, Barbara Herman,
Andrew Mensch, Gary Platt, The Temple Shalom Brother-
hood (organized by Michael Schreiber), Marilyn Baron,
Erik Rofe and family, Joe & Jada Guido, and Barbara Lev-
inson. There is one more person who deserves special
mention, Don Fast. In addition to leading a number of
services this summer, as our Ritual Chair, Don was indis-
pensable both in terms of helping to recruit service lead-
ers as well as in support those who agreed to lead us in
worship.
Our thanks go out to all of you for sharing the gifts of
your presence and spirit this summer. Your actions this
summer tangibly demonstrate what it means to help care

for the spiritual and physical needs of your community and are a reflection of synagogue engage-
ment at its best. My prayer as we enter this new year is that all of our work in the New Year
ahead might be reflective of the type of commitment and engagement you have already shown
us.
During the coming Holy Days, I plan to speak to our congregation on “Four Challenges for a New
Year”. My topics will include, “Social Justice - The Challenge to Make a Difference”, “Trust: The
Challenge of our Times” “Israel: The Challenges Facing Our Homeland” and “Our Congregation:
The Challenges of Tomorrow”.
In considering the last of those, I find myself inspired by those like our summer worship leaders
and so many others whose Temple Shalom connection is defined by their active participation on
behalf of the Temple community. These are the people who, to paraphrase JFK, do not simply
ask what Temple Shalom can do for them, but ask what they can do for Temple Shalom. My wish
for the new year is that each and every Temple Shalom chaver can begin a journey toward feeling
that same level of engagement and Temple ownership. It is a journey that will strengthen each
person’s individual Jewish soul and the soul of our Temple in a way that will not only benefit
each of us, but also draw in others to join with us in our sacred mission.
Like any journey, it is not something done in a day or a week or even a month, but rather over a
lifetime of involvement and like any journey, it begins with one small step. During the Holy
Days, I will invite you to take specific small steps toward greater Temple connection, even as I
call on our professional staff and lay leaders to do more for you in support of your journey. For
now, let me share one small initiative, inspired by our summer worship leaders, that you can
look forward to in this new year.
Immediately following Rosh Hashanah, I will be offering you the opportunity to participate in
our regular Friday evening Shabbat worship by leading us in one of the English readings. There
will be an on-line sign up form with dates and parts that you can choose from. I hope that in ad-
dition to participating in our worship, you will invite friends and family to join you that evening.
In the midst of our sanctuary as we raise our voices in joyful prayer and celebration, I hope you
will find this to be an opportunity to take another step in your journey of Jewish connection and
synagogue engagement.
I look forward in the coming New Year to having you join me on the bimah and to joining you in
your continuing Jewish journey, and in engaging together in the mission of our Kehillah
Kedosha, our sacred community.

High Holy Day Reminders:
Ticket Request forms are due to the office by Wednesday,
September 10, 2014. Ticket(s) will be mailed the week of Sep-
tember 15, 2014.
Yizkor Book information is due to the Temple Office by Friday, September 19, 2014.
Did you know that there is reciprocity among temples for High Holy Day guests? As a member in
good standing, we will be glad to let an out-of-town congregation know that you will be visiting
them for the High Holy Days. At the same time, if family and friends will be visiting here, we offer
the same reciprocity to them. Reciprocal tickets are available at no charge. Call Leslie Kallus,
Temple Administrator, at 973-584-5666 for more information about reciprocity.
Cemetery Visit
It is customary to visit the graves of loved ones during the High Holy Day period. For those peo-
ple who have loved ones who are buried too far away to visit, or whose loved ones are buried at
the Temple Shalom section of the Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery, there will be a memorial
service on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 11:00 am. The service will be held at the Temple Shalom
section of the Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery.
Directions from Temple Shalom to Mount Freedom Hebrew Cemetery:
Make a right when exiting the Temple parking lot. Turn right onto Righter Road. Continue
straight through the light at Eyland Avenue. At stop sign, turn right onto Park Avenue. Turn left
onto Pleasant Hill Road. Turn right onto Dover-Chester Road (Route 513). Turn left onto South
Road. Cemetery will be on the right, about one mile down.
Making Your Holy Days More Meaningful
Each year, Temple Shalom participates in collecting food for the food pantry sponsored by Rox-
bury Social Services. Ushers will provide you with shopping bags on Rosh Hashanah. Bring them
back to the synagogue through October 11, 2014, filled with non-perishable food items. We will
weigh the amount of food donated and publish the weight in the November Kesher.
The Officers and Trustees of Temple Shalom wish you and your family a happy and healthy new
year, a year of peace.

Welcome Back 5775 is fast approaching. The upcoming month holds many fun and engaging opportunities for Temple
Shalom members of all ages to find personal meaning and community connection at the outset of the
new year. You can find all these events on our online Temple Calendar at: http://bit.ly/tshalomcalendar
Our youngest friends will especially enjoy Tot Shabbat on September 12th and the Joanie Leeds concert
(more info at http://www.joanieleeds.com/) on September 14th.
Junior Youth Group (3rd through 5th graders) kicks off the year with a trip to Bushkill Falls after Sunday
School on the 21st.
All our families will want to join us for the official “kick-off” to our High Holy Day season, Selichot. Jews
around the world gather the Saturday night before the 10 days of awe to emotionally and spiritually pre-
pare for this traditional time of reflection. A variety of interactive family activities on this theme await
you at 6:30 pm on Saturday night, September 20th. The activities conclude with an all-generation
oneg and havdallah. Other family-oriented highlights coming up this month include:
Outdoor Shabbat service at Horseshoe Lake: Sept. 5th at 5:45 pm
Opening of Religious School: Sun., Sept. 7th
First Session of Temple Shalom Academy (8th - 10th graders): Mon., Sept. 29th
Apple Picking at Sun High Orchards in Randolph: Sun., Sept.er 28th after Sunday School
High Holy Day program for children during the early morning Rosh Hashana service on Sept.
25th
As we enter this season of reflection and renewal, it is a perfect time to deepen your family’s connection
to our tradition and our Temple Shalom family. Wishing everyone a very sweet, healthy and fulfilling
5775 ahead and I look forward to ushering in the new year with you and yours!

Rosh Chodesh Women’s Journey Group
Rosh Chodesh Women’s Journey Group is a group of women who meet to learn more about our-
selves, our history, and our Jewish culture and customs.

derie, support, sharing our lives and having fun.
We meet nine or ten times a year either in each other’s homes, at the Temple or out on an ad-
venture. Leadership for events and hosting rotate on a strictly voluntary basis.
The group’s goals are to enjoy ourselves, to develop deeper relationships with each other, to
share our joys and sorrows, to be supportive in times of need, and to promote equality of leader-
ship bringing together women of all ages and life experiences.
We are here to learn about each other and from each other.
Rosh Chodesh Women’s Journey Group is open to all Jewish women in the community. Please
