Whatever . . . from Fr. Robert
from Fr. Todd. . . . . .
Dear Parishioners,
Last weekend I was able to baptize my niece - the one born on Ash Wednesday. I have another niece or nephew
due right around Easter. My brother, Fr. Gary, and I take turns with the family sacraments, so he will be baptizing the
next one in April. (If you are wondering, we drew straws for the first baptism years ago to start the rotation. He is the
one who made both of the straws and he won, but I have largely resisted accusing him of rigging it!).
We are entering into Holy week. This sacred time is filled with spaces where we can take extra time in prayer.
One of my favorite times of the whole Triduum is Holy Thursday night when Jesus is taken from Church to the Altar of
repose. It is to mimic the time he spent in the Garden of Gethsemane. That night the apostles fell asleep and he asked
Peter “Could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matthew 26:40). That evening is a powerful one to spend with Jesus,
to just go and be with a friend. Look for the time God is calling to you and give Him a gift this week. Even as He walks
with us we can walk with Him.
As we celebrate Palm Sunday, we begin Holy Week. I know many families will be leaving for Spring Break vacations, and while it will be sad not to have you here for these celebrations, I pray you have a safe vacation. I encourage you to celebrate these Holy Days wherever you are. I promise we will make our Holy Week Liturgies as family friendly as possible. (We will be using incense on Holy Thursday, at the Easter Vigil on Saturday and at the noon Easter Sunday Mass.)
Holy Thursday we will have the Mass of the Lord's Supper at 6:30 pm . This liturgy celebrates the institution of the Eucharist and our participation in Jesus' presence, not only in the Eucharist but in our lives and the world. I encourage all those who help in Liturgical Ministries to join in this celebration: Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Musicians, Sacristans, Servers, Ushers, Greeters and those who decorate the church (I am sure I a missing some other ministries). I invite
everyone to consider coming forward to have a foot washed, this custom doesn't just remind us of what Jesus did for his Apostles, but it also reminds us that we are charged to be his presence in this world as disciples, and we are in need of His cleansing from our sins to be truly effective.
We will have the "Garden of Gethsemane" in the Gathering Space of Church with adoration until 10:00 pm, following the Holy Thursday liturgy. We will hear confessions right after the Mass, this will be the last chance until after Easter.
Good Friday Liturgy begins at 1:00 pm after the 12:30 pm Stations of the Cross. This simple ceremony with a more somber mood stands in stark contrast to the Easter Vigil which is Saturday at 8:00 pm. We move from the Cross to the Resurrection. If you haven't celebrated these two liturgies together I encourage you to do it this year. I maintain that it is hard to fully appreciate either liturgy without the other. I promise to keep the vigil to a reasonable length (about 1 1/2 hours, Fr. Todd doesn't believe it can be done!) it is a very beautiful ceremony.
Reminders:
No confessions Saturday March 31st!
No 6pm Mass Easter Sunday!
No Mass or confessions Monday April 2nd!

Greetings in Christ!
Palm Sunday the last Sunday before Easter; we
are about to celebrate God shattering the
shackles of death, opening the gates of heaven
and hell, and opening everlasting love to us.
This day is so valuable for Catholic Christians,
this day is exciting! Do not let this exciting time
go to waste. So - I have a challenge for you this
Palm Sunday; I challenge you in the next week
to invite the people you encounter in your day
to day life, and invite them to join you at St.
John’s for celebrating Jesus’ resurrection.

Hi my name is ____________________________
I would like to invite you to join me at St. John’s to
celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ! I am
going to the _______________ Mass. I really hope
to see you there.
Yours in Christ,
HOLY WEEK - Holy Week services CAN be meaningful for
children! In fact, children may find these services intriguing and of particular interest because of the “different” things that occur. For years I have taken all of my children to Triduum services, and combined with traditional activities and celebrations at home - we consider this one of the best weeks of the year. Color Eggs! (Of course.) Make Hot Cross Buns (They really are easy, and oh, so, tasty!)
If you have never made Resurrection Buns for Easter they are easy and so much fun. Ingredients: Can of Crescent Rolls
3 Tablespoons Butter
Small bowl of Cinnamon/Sugar
1 Large Marshmallow for each crescent roll
Aluminum Foil for cookie sheet
Directions: Melt the butter, preheat oven to 350 degrees, and cover the cookie sheet with foil. As you make the rolls, tell your children the Easter story:
Jesus was completely perfect and sinless, but because He claimed to be God, they crucified Him, and he died on the cross on Good Friday. Pass out the marshmallows: This white marshmallow represents Jesus, because He was without sin. When Jesus died, they prepared bodies for burial by putting special oils and spices on them - that’s what the butter and the cinnamon remind us of. Have them dip the marshmallow first in the melted butter, and then in the cinnamon-sugar. Then they wrapped Jesus’ body in a white cloth. That’s what the roll represents. Now wrap the marshmallows in the crescent rolls. After that they sealed the tomb. (Seal those rolls well!) Then, they placed Jesus’ body in a tomb cut in stone. It was kind of like a cave. They sealed it with a big heavy rock so that no one could get in, and placed soldiers in front of the tomb to guard it! Bake the rolls for 10 to 12 minutes until they are golden brown. Before removing them from the oven, say, Jesus was in the tomb for 3 days, and then he rose from the dead!
Let the rolls cool for a few minutes. Now, when you cut the roll in half - it’s empty inside! Then you tell your kids: Our Rolls are empty inside, just like that tomb—and just like our rolls, God’s love for us is sweet!

Outreach has Moved!!
Outreach has moved! We are now at the west end of the Parish Office Building. That is the door closest
to Adelaide Street. The problems we faced at the Stone Church were continually worsening. Our move became a safety issue
and a health concern with all the critters living there with us.
Moving Outreach is no picnic. There is a lot to move and few hands
to do the job. Thanks to Shauna’s patience and the cooperation of everyone who had to move, or be moved, to create space for us, all went very well. We will be trying to settle in to our new surroundings over the next few days.
One of the new problems we will face, is the fact we have no space to store beds or frames meant for others. We will have to schedule all donations to be directly delivered. If there is space somewhere to store beds and furniture we will seek it out. Let us hear your suggestions.
We have had several people in financial distress in the last few weeks. They were local mothers trying to raise their families. Thank you for helping these Moms stay in their homes and raise their children with some sense of dignity. I will tell their stories in coming weeks.
Our Parish continues to amaze me. We come together in times of distress or urgent need. While often Parishioners we have successfully raised them out of their present misery. We try to set people on a path of success, not leaving them to fall back into the abyss. This is not always possible depending on a specific situation. And the issue at hand, but that is the Goal. That’s what Jesus expects of us.
Have a Happy Palm Sunday!!
One side of the “quality of life” argument is the claim that abortion is justifiable for babies who are diagnosed with terminal illnesses. After all, they are going to die anyway, so what kind of quality of life can they possibly have?
If you really think about it, it isn’t fair to condemn someone to death because “they are going to die anyway.” You are going to die someday, too. That would not be a good excuse for someone to kill you now.
Recall Mary at the foot of the cross. She knew her son was going to die, but she didn’t run around begging the Roman soldiers to “put Him out of His misery.” She stayed with Jesus out of love, commitment, care, and compassion, recognizing that His life had a purpose even to the very end.

Week 28: God made me so clever that I can now do somersaults by a series of movements similar to walking. The placenta that is attached to my umbilical cord is an organ that provides oxygen and nutrients to me. It also removes carbon dioxide and other waste products. Cool, right? The placenta maintains a higher temperature than that of the rest of my mother’s body, roughly 100.7 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit! Isn’t God amazing! Thank you for spiritually adopting me and praying for me and my mom.

An Education in Faith
Roller Skating is Fun and Exciting! The students at St. John the Evangelist Catholic School have a unique treat in physical education once a year with the roller skating unit. The skating program is offered as part of the physical education program for students in grades K-5th. The students learn to stand on skates, stand in a T position, how to stop and the progressions for forward and backward skating. Skating is very good for building and developing cardiorespiratory endurance, helping with balance, posture and coordination.
It is so much fun to watch the students progress from not being able to stand on their skates to being able to skate around the room independently. I often hear, “Look at me! I am doing it!” The students look forward to the skating unit every year. Seeing the smiles on their faces when they are skating is priceless!

Lord God, I give you thanks, for you are good, and your mercy is endless. Here I stand, at the start of this holy week, This week in which your church remembers Jesus’ passion and death, and I am distracted by many things. Turn my eyes now to the One who comes in your name The one who opens the gates of righteousness The one who answers when we call. I bless you, Lord, for sending your son to us, in human frailty. To walk the road we walk. Open my eyes that I may see him coming and praise him with a pure heart. And I may walk in the way of his suffering, and share also in his resurrection. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
ROSARY FOR LENT
Looking for something different to commit to this Lent? It is not too late to join us as we pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary one half hour before the 5:00 p,m., 8:00 a.m. .and 10:00 a.m. weekend masses.
During Lent we will be praying for those in our parish family and in our individual families who are ill, especially those suffering from terminal illnesses. As we meditate on His sufferings for us, we will be praying for those among us who are suffering physically or mentally.
Human Trafficking – Vocabulary of Survivors Awareness has come a long way since the term “human trafficking” first made its appearance in various forms (news articles, TV, books and magazines). Some thought that the term was just a buzz word that would die out in a short time, but others pledged to keep this topic in the forefront. As time passed, survivors came forward to tell their real-life stories. The “telling” was an integral part of their healing and exposed a vocabulary from the inside.
There is a common thread among the stories. Words like shamed, blamed, abandoned, isolated, hopeless, and darkness describe feelings prior to gaining help to escape the horror of being a victim of trafficking. The road to recovery is very long and difficult because the victims are convinced they are worthless. As they walk the road to reclaim their lives, new words enter their vocabularies. While these words are not truly new, they have been unused and forgotten for a long time. These words evolve slowly and form a new life within. What are these words? They are power, hope, future, potential, victory, and joy. As time heals, the words become a reality for these people (once seen as victims – now known as survivors).
Please pray to end all forms of human trafficking and report all suspicious activity to authorities or the Hotline by calling 888-3737-888.

St. John Memories…..
My Grandmother, Catherine Clinton,
told my father that when she was a girl,
before any church structure was
completed, the mass would be held in
parishioners’ homes on a monthly
basis, and later on every other week.
The priest, traveling in his horse and
buggy, said mass one week in Fenton,
the next week in Holly, the next week
in Deerfield and so on. One family who
would host the mass was Sister Tony’s
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Dauner.
Another location was the big square
house on the corner of Silver Lake Rd.,
east of Leroy Street by the alley. I don’t
know who lived there. Before it was
torn down, it was used by the
American Legion.
The first church structure was begun in
1868. When they had any spare money,
they built, when there was no money
they didn’t. That was the church my
father attended as a boy. He said it was
a wood frame building that had no
insulation and too small of a potbelly
stove, so in the winter time it was very
cold in there. In those times, every day
was penance. It was located just north
of where the stone church is today.
Where the stone church is located now
was where the parishioners parked the
horses and buggies.
My father was born in 1906 and
baptized at St. John that same year. My
parents lived in Tyrone Township,
eight miles from Fenton. It took one
hour to go to Fenton, and an hour back
home. There was no such thing as a
lukewarm Catholic in those days.
