From: Legacy Path: Discover Intentional Spiritual Parenting, by Brian Haynes
(1) Simplify – less is more: "Complexity of life, even when filled with good things, monopolizes valuable time and energy necessary to disciple our children... Simplicity buys us time with our children that enables us to disciple them and pass on a godly legacy." – p. 35
(2) Time – related to family schedule:
Only 1 extra-curricular activity
Prioritize family time together
Maintain family dinner time
(3) How Church and family converge:
Live at the conviction level (Heb. 10:23)
Attend church regularly with your children (Heb. 10:24-25)
Involve your children in Home Community (Acts 2:42-47)
What is Home Community (HC)? When we read the Bible, we read about Christians congregating for corporate worship on Sundays, and we read about Christians gathering in homes for more intimate fellowship and discipleship (see for example Acts 2:42-47). How are we incorporating children into HCs? The same material will be touched on in three different ways for children throughout the week:
1) Starting in September, each week children will receive good bible teaching on Sundays in Children’s Church.
2) During HC, children will process what they learned on Sunday, separate from the adults.
3) At the end of the HC meeting, the children will join the adults to talk about what they learned so that parents and their children can continue the conversation about how this applies to everyday life.
Sample of HC Children’s Church Bible Story Schedule for June:
June 12th – Ruth 1:1-22 June 19th – Ruth 2-4 June 26th – 1 Samuel 1:1-28
Building Christ Centered Family in missional Community
The Biblical Basis of Marriage – Genesis 1-3
Husband and Wife roles – Gen. 3:16 & Eph. 5:21-33 Communication – Eph. 4:25-32
Forgiveness (the Gospel) – Matthew 18:21-35 Progressive Sanctification – Philippians 2:12-13
Stewardship of Finances – Malachi 3:6-18
Stewardship of Parenting (June 12th) Stewardship of Sex (June 19th)
Stewardship of the Gospel (June 26th)
Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your
father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Parenting as a “Stewardship” The goal = bring them up in the admonition of the LORD to make wise and
godly decisions on their own (Joshua 24:15): Joshua 24:15 “And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom
you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

“The Household Code” – Eph. 5:21-6:9 Ephesians 5:21 “submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
The driving assumptions of the Bible’s instructions on parenting is: 1) Husband & wife are Christians, partnering together with their
offspring to recognize the Lordship of Christ (Joshua 24:15) 2) Husband & wife are seeking to be disciple-makers of their own
children (Matt. 28:19-20; Deut. 6:4-9) 3) Husband & wife are living by the 10 Commandments, led by the
Holy Spirit, teaching their kids to do the same (Ex. 20:3-17)
To “Children” (6:1-3)
Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
“Children” = not about age, but about relationship.
− “obey” = listen to parents’ advice with unswerving obedience.
− your parents “in the Lord” = home under Lordship of Jesus
for this is “right” = an expected standard for Christians
“Disobedience to parents is a symptom of a disintegrating social structure, and Christian families have a particular responsibility not to contribute to the collapse of an ordered community.” – A. Skevington Wood
Eph. 6:2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” “Honor”= more than “obey” it means to “respect” & “esteem”
The promises of following the 5th commandment (Ex. 20:12):
1) that it “may go well with you” blessings / curses
and…
2) that you “may live long in the land” has two applications:
A. This is biblical “survival of the fittest”
B. This is biblical “social security”
To “Fathers” (6:4) Eph. 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the
discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
“Fathers” = Paul is addressing the “representative head” – in God’s economy, the father is primary steward accountable before God
do not “provoke” your children to anger = to “drive a child to angry exasperation” or “perpetual resentment” by overcorrection so that the child loses heart or explodes.
This happens by “giving excessively unreasonable demands” or “unfairness” or “abuse of authority” or “constant nagging” or “subjecting a child to humiliation” or “complete insensitivity to the child’s needs and sensibilities” − The opposite is to abdicate responsibility = no discipline spoil
the child
but “bring them up” = bodily nourishment & education:
1) in the “discipline” = nouthesia (Greek), means correction by word of mouth involving:
Admonish = disapproval
Reproof = blame
Advice = give wise counsel
Encouragement = exhortation (see 2 Tim. 3:16)
2) and “instruction” of the Lord = paideia (Greek), means “Education” or “child training” or “strict discipline” in relation to the Word of God and how it applies to life.
