From Nashville & Youngstown, Ohio! Big Weekend atNighttown with Legendary Guitarist of Glass Harp Fame in arare, and exclusive, Small Club Appearance!!

Special Guest opening act Dan Bankhurst. Presented with thesupport of Roots of American Music (ROAM).Phil's solo career has spanned more than 40 years, and has included over 60 soloalbums, both vocal and instrumental, 8 releases with his band, Glass Harp, as wellas numerous duets and trio albums. One of the most sought after studio guitarists,Phil also continues to sell out concerts all over the United States, with his ever-changing style, ranging from rock-and-roll to fully orchestrated instrumentalcompositions.

Born on March 23, 1951 in Youngstown, OH, the ninth of ten children, Phil grew upin a home filled with music. On Phil's 10th birthday, his brother, Dave returnedhome with a Sears Silvertone guitar. That's when the magic began.

Phil spent most of his younger days involved in music, and at the young age of 13,he joined his very first band, the Keytones. He later went on to join such localgroups as The Vertices, The Squires, and the Volume Four, who later changed theirname to New Hudson Exit.

But it wasn't until 1970, when Phil's band Glass Harp (with childhood friend JohnSferra on drums, and Dan Pecchio on bass) recorded their self-titled first albumthat people really began to take notice of this incredibly gifted guitar player. GlassHarp gained more popularity in the Ohio area, opening for such bands as the Kinksand Yes, and even performing at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York City. Over the next few years, they recorded two more albums entitled "Synergy" and "ItMakes Me Glad".

By 1972, Phil saw his life going in a different direction, and made the toughdecision to leave Glass Harp and pursue a solo career. His first solo album, "WhatA Day", was recorded in just a week's time during January 1973. He married hissweetheart Bernadette, and they moved to Upstate New York and joined a Churchcommunity called Love Inn.

During his years there, Phil took a break from recording his own music. It wasn'tuntil three years later in 1976 that Phil would record his second solo album, "LoveBroke Thru", which was soon followed by a string of albums, including theacclaimed instrumental album, "The Master And The Musician".

With the Christian Music industry really beginning to grow, Phil won his very firstDove award in 1988 for his instrumental album, “The Wind and the Wheat. Phil'ssecond Dove Award came in 1992 for his Celtic-influenced, "Beyond Nature". Eachyear from 1998 to 2001, Phil has dominated the "Instrumental Record" category atthe Doves, winning for "Invention", "Acoustic Sketches", "Majesty and Wonder", andmost recently "Lights of Madrid". For three years in a row, Phil was voted one of thetop fingerstyle guitarists by Guitar Player Magazine readers.

These days, Phil Keaggy continues to delight audiences all over the US performingprimarily acoustic shows, and occasional concerts with a band. He is aware thatGod gave him a calling to deliver the Gospel through his music, and for over 40years, Phil Keaggy has been grateful to do just that, and will hopefully continue todo so for many years to come.

From NYC. Emerging Cabaret Star Marissa Mulder, and Jazz PianistExtraordinaire Jon Weber join forces live at Nighttown! With Bryan Thomas-acoustic bass.

Marissa Mulder grew up in Syracuse, NY. She moved to New York City in 2007 andhas gone on to become one of the most successful young cabaret artists on the NYscene. In 2011, she beat out 60 other singers to win the MetroStar Challenge at theMetropolitan Room, an American Idol type contest for up and coming cabaretartists. Since then she has performed in several of her own shows.

Stephen Holden of the New York Times called her show "Tom...In His Words, thesongs of Tom Waits", "Far and away the season's best show, everything the genrecan be but almost never is."

She is the winner of the 2013 Noel Coward and Julie Wilson Award which werepresented to her at Lincoln Center where she also sang. She was the winner of the2014 MAC award for Major Artist and Album Of The Year ( Tom...In His Words). Atthe end of 2013, TimeOut NY named Marissa, "Rising Star of The Year". She was afeatured guest and singer on Piano Jazz hosted by Jon Weber on NPR.

In New York City, She has performed at The Carlyle, Lincoln Center, Town Hall,Carnegie Hall, The Algonquin Hotel, 54 Below, Joe's pub and many others. She hasbegun taking her solo shows on the road as well as traveling to Dallas, St. Louis,Nebraska, Buffalo, Binghamton and many more. She has two CD's "Tom...In HisWords" and "Illusions".

Jon Weber, who won a 2015 Bistro Award for this show, is one of the most soughtafter musicians in New York cabaret. Critics raved about 100 Years of Piano Jazz. The New York Times' Stephen Holden wrote: "This one-hour program was anenlightening music history tutorial, delivered with enthusiasm and wit by amusician who is utterly devoid of professorial grandiosity. But because Mr. Webercan play up a storm, it was also a thrilling demonstration of one man's passionateattachment to his chosen instrument."

According to Hanks, the New York Cabaret Editor for BroadwayWorld.com, "LikeLeonard Bernstein, Jon Weber knows that the intricacies of certain musiclanguages--whether classical or jazz--can be frustratingly elusive, so he's made ithis mission to educate the masses. And when some of the students in the audienceare among the most accomplished instrumentalists in New York, you realize thatyour teacher is a virtuoso."

Trumpeter extraordinaire with All-Star Sextet live at Nighttown!

Featuring: Wallace Roney-trumpet, Lenny White-drums, Anthony Wonsey-piano,Ben Solomon-tenor sax, Mike Lee-tenor sax, and Rashaan Carter-bass.

Wallace Roney is from Philadelphia, born 1960. He began playing the trumpet atage six. As a child prodigy, by the age of 12 Wallace became the youngestmember of the Philadelphia brass ensemble which was comprised of members ofthe Philadelphia Orchestra.

During his affiliation with the brass ensemble Wallace met jazz great Clark Terrywho became a major influence, teacher, mentor and friend. Clark Terry taught himmore about the trumpet than previous classical trumpet teachers had. He taughthim technique, articulation and breath control. Clark Terry was the first ofWallace's three greatest mentors.

Wallace's moved to Washington, DC where he attended the Duke Ellington Schoolof the Arts. Wallace sat in with Art Blakey's band at the age of 15 and was offeredthe job to replace trumpeter Bill Hardman. A car accident that happened the dayafter he was offered the gig caused Wallace's father not to let him take the job.

At the age of 16 he met another trumpet player who would become the secondgreatest influence in his musical life, Dizzy Gillespie. Dizzy taught Wallace evenmore advanced techniques that enhanced his ability to play intricateimprovisational phrases. During this time he also went to NY and sat in with thegreat Philly Joe Jones which caused a stir. It wasn't long before he met the greattrumpet player Woody Shaw who also became a close friend and mentor. He alsoplayed with Joe Henderson, Dollar Brand and then studied for a year at BerkeleSchool of Music before leaving there to rejoin Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.

Since playing with the "Messengers" the list of people that Wallace has played withis a veritable who's who of jazz. Too numerous to name, he likes to say that he hasplayed with everyone from Jay McShann to Herbie Hancock.

In 1983 he met the greatest influence in his life, the person that was his idol andhis greatest teacher, Mile Davis. Wallace's relationship with Mile was similar toLouis Armstrong's relationship with Joe (King) Oliver. Being with Miles gave himinsight and tutelage on being a melodist, being on top of the most creative music, and uncompromisingly taking it further.

At one point Wallace rejoined Art Blakey's Band and at the same time was invitedto play with Tony Williams' quintet.

All of the time spent studying under and hanging with Miles Davis led Miles to askWallace to play with him on the Historic Miles at Montreux Concert. This washistoric because it was the first time Miles had played straight ahead jazz in 30years. The concert was recorded and it received a Grammy. Wallace joined whathe considers to be the greatest group in history, VSOP, which included HerbieHancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, and Wayne Shorter. It is with VSOP thatWallace won his second Grammy. In 1996 he joined Chick Corea's "SpecialQuintet".

HUGH MASEKELA & LARRY WILLIS$40.00 Thursday 12/03 8:00 pm Buy Tickets

South African Trumpet Legend Hugh Masekela joins forces with his old friend, and colleague, pianist Larry Willis, in Duo performance Live at Nighttown!

Playing music from their 4 CD Collection "Friends".

This evening brings a grand reunion of old friends, as South African trumpet iconHugh Masekela and master jazz pianist Larry Willis perform in a rare duet setting. When Masekela and Willis met as Manhattan School of Music students in the early1960s they were both fish out of water seeking their own musical paths.

Encouraged by Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Harry Belafonte, Masekelacombined his homeland’s music with hard bop and R&B, creating a hugely popularsound exemplified by his 1968 chart-topping hit “Grazing In the Grass.”

Willis was studying theory and classical voice until Masekela encouraged him tofocus on jazz (but not before making his recording debut in an Aaron Coplandopera directed by Leonard Bernstein). Willis became a first-call accompanist, recording with everyone from Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan to Branford Marsalisand Roy Hargrove, while also making numerous excellent albums of his own.

A few years ago they reunited in South Africa and ended up recording a four-discduo project, Friends, featuring Willis’s incisive piano and Masekela’s soulfultrumpet and vocals. Interpreting standards with warmth and boundless humanity, they offer a timeless take on ageless music.

"The pair seemed to think as one as they alternated American jazz gems with Africaninfluences. Their call-and-response interplay was filled with ear-catching surprises,Masekela's horn style a contrast of fiery and earthy, as Willis created new configurationsof old melodies " — All About Jazz

CHRIS POTTER$30.00 Saturday 12/05 8:00 pm Buy Tickets 10:00 pm Buy Tickets

Cutting edge NYC saxophonist, and ECM recording artist leads All-Star Trio liveat Nighttown! Featuring: Larry Grenadier-acoustic bass, & Eric Harland-drums

A world-class soloist, accomplished composer and formidable bandleader, saxophonist Chris Potter has emerged as a leading light of his generation. DownBeat called him "One of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet"while Jazz Times identified him as "a figure of international renown." Jazz sax elderstatesman Dave Liebman called him simply, "one of the best musicians around," asentiment shared by the readers of Down Beat in voting him second only to tenorsax great Sonny Rollins in the magazine's 2008 Readers Poll.

A potent improvisor and the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's JazzparPrize, Potter's impressive discography includes 15 albums as a leader and sidemanappearances on over 100 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for hissolo work on "In Vogue," a track from Joanne Brackeen’s 1999 album Pink ElephantMagic, and was prominently featured on Steely Dan’s Grammy-winning albumfrom 2000, Two Against Nature. He has performed or recorded with many of theleading names in jazz, such as Herbie Hancock, Dave Holland, John Scofield, theMingus Big Band, Jim Hall, Paul Motian, Dave Douglas, Ray Brown and many others.

Since bursting onto the New York scene in 1989 as an 18-year-old prodigy withbebop icon Red Rodney (who himself had played as a young man alongside thelegendary Charlie Parker), Potter has steered a steady course of growth as aninstrumentalist and composer-arranger. Through the '90s, he continued to gaininvaluable bandstand experience as a sideman while also making strongstatements as a bandleader-composer-arranger.

Page 15: From Nashville & Youngstown, Ohio! Big Weekend atlive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_2-2015.11.05.15.36.archive.pdfas numerous duets and trio albums. One of the most sought after studio

Looking back over his 20 years since arriving in New York, Potter says, “I’ve had thechance to learn a lot from all the leaders that I’ve worked with.

His initial gig with Red Rodney was an eye-opening and educational experience forthe 18-year-old saxophonist. “I wish I had had the perspective I have now toappreciate what a larger-than-life character Red was.” Potter's years with PaulMotian's Electric Bebop Band represented a wholly different approach fromRodney’s old school bebop aesthetic on stage. “Motian has really had a big affecton the way that I think about music,” says the saxophonist. “He approaches thingsfrom such an anti-analytical way. It’s so different than so many of the othermusicians that I’ve had a chance to work with. Motian more relies on his aestheticsensibility and his instinct. He’s basically just trusting his gut and he’s so strongabout it that he can make it work. And it takes a lot of courage to do that.”

From bassist-bandleader Dave Holland he learned about the importance of focusand willpower. "Dave is determined to make his music as strong as possible andpresent it in the best way," says Potter, who has been a member of Holland'sgroups for the past 10 years.

Now a respected veteran (as well as a new father), Potter continues to work as abandleader and featured sideman. Surely many interesting chapters await. As hislongtime colleague, alto saxophonist-composer Dave Binney, told Down Beat,“Chris is open to anything now. From here on anything could happen.” - Bill Milkowski

FREDDY COLE QUARTET $30.00 Sunday 12/06 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Legendary vocalist and pianist and brother of Nat "King" Cole leads Quartet forHoliday Show at Nighttown:

Featuring: Freddy Cole-piano & vocals, Randy Napoleon-guitar, Elias Bailey, &Quentin Baxter-drums.

Freddy Cole, the legacy of his brother Nat Cole, will stir up memories that will neverbe forgotten. Now in his 50th year of performing, this great singer and pianist hasdeveloped a huge following of his own. The instantly recognizable Cole voice anda veteran quartet, play the classics as well as new compositions andinterpretations from a huge repertoire.

Lionel Frederick Cole was the youngest of five children. His three elder brothers,Eddie, Ike and Nat (12 years Freddy’s senior) were all musicians. “Music was allaround me.” In the Chicago home of his youth, visitors included Duke Ellington,Count Basie and Lionel Hampton. Cole moved to New York in 1951, where hestudied at the Juillard School of Music and found himself profoundly influenced byJohn Lewis, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. He received a master’s degree fromthe New England Conservatory of Music and then spent several months on the roadas a member of an Earl Bostic band that also included Johnny Coles and BennyGolson.

It was back in New York that Cole successfully laid the groundwork for a career thatcontinues to flourish to this day. Cole doesn't apologize for sounding like hisbrother, Nat Cole. There are certain unmistakable similarities. He plays piano andsings, and performs live with guitar and upright bass, just like Nat. Yet his voice israspier, smokier, jazzier even. But he has emerged from the awesome shadow castby his elder brother. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable and articulate - areamong the most respected in jazz.

A don't miss concert for the holidays!

Ramsey Lewis has been an iconic leader in the contemporary jazz movement for over 50years with an unforgettable sound and outgoing personality that has allowed him to crossover to the pop and R&B charts.

The Ramsey Lewis Trio, with bassist Eldee Young and percussionist Redd Holt, became afixture on the Chicago jazz scene, releasing their debut album, Ramsey Lewis & HisGentlemen of Jazz, back in 1956. Lewis earned his first gold record, as well as a Grammyaward for Best Jazz Performance, for their swinging version of Dobie Gray’s hit “The InCrowd.” He returned to the pop charts in 1966 with versions of “Hang On Sloopy” and“Wade In The Water.” Throughout the years, Lewis’ trio has undergone membershipchanges, all the while staying true to Lewis’ high musical standards.

After Young and Holt left Lewis’ trio to form their own group, the pianist hired a newrhythm section with Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice White on drums. When Whiteleft the band to form Earth, Wind & Fire, Morris Jennings signed on as the trio’s newpercussionist. White returned to produce Lewis’ 1974 smash album entitled Sun Goddess,in which Lewis first experimented with electronic keyboards and featured Earth, Wind &Fire on the album. In 1983, Lewis returned to the studio with Young and Holt for thealbum Reunion.

Throughout his illustrious career, Lewis who is a NEA Jazz Master, has also joined forceswith countless other artists to create new and innovative music. In 1984, he collaboratedwith Nancy Wilson on The Two of Us; in 1988, he recorded with London’s PhilharmonicOrchestra for the album A Classic Encounter; and in 1989, Lewis and Dr. Billy Taylor cut aset of piano duets in We Meet Again. In 1995, Lewis launched the side project UrbanKnights, in which he collaborated with a handful of successful crossover jazz stars, including Grover Washington, Jr., Earl Klugh, and Dave Koz. In 1997, Lewis added discjockey to his resume, hosting a popular show on Chicago’s WNUA-FM that ran until 2009. A new show was syndicated in 2006 under the name Legends of Jazz with Ramsey Lewisand was broadcast on jazz radio stations across the country. In 2006, a well-received 13-episode Legends of Jazz television series hosted by Lewis was broadcast by PBS. Latelyhe has been touring with Philip Bailey (Earth, Wind & Fire), John Pizzarelli and Dee DeeBridgewater as well as doing dates in celebration of the 50th anniversary of "The 'In'Crowd".

After having played mostly in an acoustic trio for the last fifteen years, Lewis’ latestendeavor has him returning to his electric roots. The three time Grammy® winner willrelease his new CD Taking Another Look – Deluxe Edition on July 24, 2015, featuring anew electric quintet with Henry Johnson on guitar, Michael Logan on keys, Joshua Ramoson bass and Charles Heath on drums. On the CD, Lewis rekindles his 1974 career-definingalbum “Sun Goddess”.

The CD also features three bonus tracks. First, the legendary Dr. John serves up someCajun style funk with his rendition of “Jungle Strut”. Then up and comers and jazz fusionfunksters Kung Fu turn in a mesmerizing version of “Tambura”. Finally, TAUK delivers anamazing take on “Sharing Her Journey” that clearly establishes them as a band to watch.

"I've recorded maybe 70-80 albums, and this album is definitely among the top five" saidLewis.

The development of a true jazz singer is along-range prospect, laden with learning experiences that forge the voice into atrue instrument, rich with passion, deeply invested in living through life’s joys andperils; such is the journey of Vanessa Rubin, jazz singer extraordinaire. Capable ofemploying the gamut of emotions, the mature Ms. Rubin can range from whisperto shout in the blink of an eye; from honey-laden ballads purring like a kitten, to uptempo swinging and scatting like a fluent saxophone, she delivers the goods.

One of the surest tests of a jazz singer is her acceptance by skilled players; therelationship between instrumentalist and vocalist is so often fraught with distrust. Vanessa Rubin has never experienced such travails. From the time she joined theNew York jazz community in the early 80s, under the guidance of suchgrandmasters as Barry Harris and Frank Foster, Rubin’s acceptance has beenuniversal. Instrumentalists have always been impressed by her way around asong, her willingness to flow with their muse, and her innate ability to swing thatmusic.

The list of great musicians who have graced her recordings and bandstands isquite impressive: Monty Alexander, Cecil Bridgewater, Kenny Burrell, Frank Foster,Billy Higgins, Etta Jones, Lewis Nash, Houston Person, Patience Higgins, DonBraden, Toots Thielemans, Steve Turre, Cedar Walton, Grover Washington, Jr., andJames Williams are just a few of the masters who’ve lent their skills to support Ms.Rubin’s artistry. More recently she has completed auspicious global tours withHerbie Hancock, the Woody Herman Orchestra, and the Jazz Crusaders.
