Dear Friends,

As summer turns to fall, I am thanking God for the blessings of summertime refreshment and renewal, as well as the energetic call to new horizons. There is very little “here we go again” feel to Trinity as we start the new church year. The Spirit is moving us into the future in ways I could not have predicted (could you?) as we grow and change:

• The Parlor looks almost new, so much of it has been radically transformed, and it will provide a gracious and stimulating setting for all manner of meetings, gatherings, movies, classes, and the like.

• The Office hallway has been filled with light that bespeaks the bright, lively energy that fills our building. Soon the hallway walls will speak of faith as well, as art is hung.

• The view of the Sanctuary doors has been opened up to fully expose the “all are welcome here” message of hospitality that the Sanctuary steps (and our hearts) seek to convey.

• We are being blessed with the gifts for ministry of not just one, but two, Vanderbilt Divinity School students this year: Leigh Bonner and Greg Gardner.

• We have joyously received a new family into our Trinity family: Brad Brown and Lindsey Hinds-Brown, along with their son, Aidan.

• We are excited that two PC(USA) Young Adult Volunteers join us as their host church family on September 5th and will be with us for the year, serving in Nashville and with us: Emily Brewer (Conexion Americas) and Victor Short (TADP – Tennesseans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty).

• Our new ministry at Riverbend Maximum Security Prison continues to grow, and those leading concerts on death row, those serving as pen pals, and those mentoring and helping with re-entry will be commissioned on September 12th.

• Once again, we have the opportunity to couple our own renovation efforts on our Trinity “house” with helping fund, build and finish a family’s Habitat home on September 18th.

• And, this fall will see the launching of a vitally important Strategic Planning Process for Trinity, seeking to discern the transformation that God is already working among us and planning for God’s emerging future.

My friends, the list goes on!

At the close of worship recently I noticed how loud the sanctuary was, and then, how alive the East Hall was. People talking, laughing, hugging, little ones running, caring questions asked to follow-up on prayer concerns, joys shared. These are fruits of the Spirit – compassion, love, and joy. These are marks of the body of Christ – sharing one another’s burdens and rejoicing together. “See how they love one another!” was said of the early church. “This is such a friendly church,” a visitor said to me last week, the most friendly of all the churches we’ve visited.” That is not the first time I have heard that comment and every time I hear it I find myself spontaneously smiling (really, grinning) from ear to ear and saying, “Thanks be to God!”

May we find ourselves smiling – and grinning – as we seek to faithfully follow God’s leading together.

Rejoicing in the Spirit,Heidi

MUSIC NOTES

Tunefully yours, Valerie 931/216.6625 [email protected]

Greetings, friends!

As we move into the academic year and the corresponding church year activities, there are many exciting things already on the church calendar. A highlight of September is always the annual trek to family camp at NaCoMe, and all willing musicians are encourage to bring along guitars, harmonicas, and the like for worship and other music-making there. Please be in touch with me if you have any questions about those possibilities.

We rejoice at having the Chancel Choir resume regular evening rehearsals in time for Rally Day, and they will continue having rehearsals each Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Chapel/Music Room in addition to warm-up rehearsals Sunday mornings at 10:30. It’s certainly not too late to get involved, and all choral singers who are interested in participating are encouraged to try a weeknight rehearsal, as we welcome new members! While we will miss David Carlton during his year in North Carolina, we are happy to see many of our “regular” choir members singing once again. Additionally, we are delighted to welcome some new singers to the choir, and we look forward to getting to know them better and to making joyful worship music together.

The Children’s Choir will begin fall rehearsals at 9:30 on Sunday, September 5 in the Chapel/Music Room, and all children are encouraged to participate. Some new ideas for this year include the reinforcement of the Sunday School curriculum’s music during choir time, and any questions about the plans for the fall may be addressed to director Mary Virginia Bond, at 661-4609. At this writing, possible ideas for the Youth Choir time are being evaluated and discussed; but it is tentatively scheduled to to meet at 9:30 Sunday mornings in the sanctuary, also beginning September 5. Again, we welcome more young people to be involved!

During August we’ve enjoyed special music for four Sundays in lieu of choral anthems, and we’d like to thank Briana Larsen, Lonny Bond and David Olney, who provided solo music, as did I. Also, special thanks to Frank Kirchner for playing prelude and communion music on his saxophone August 1. I hope you will each go forward into fall with a song in your heart!

POTLUCKSUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

AFTER WORSHIP!

Everyone attending worship on September 12 is invited to a potluck lunch immediately after worship, hosted by the Fellowship Committee, which will supply paper products, drinks and desserts. Please bring one or more dishes to share with others at the potluck—main dishes, casseroles, vegetarian dishes, ethnic dishes, side dishes—whatever favorites you would like to provide for all our culinary tastes!

Special guests at the potluck will be students from the Vanderbilt/Belmont Presbyterian Student Fellowship so please make sure that we bring plenty to satisfy their appetites as well. If you have questions, speak to Vira Baker, chair of the Fellowship Committee.

SUNDAY SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS SEPTEMBER 5

In September, David Phillipy introduces a series of three programs on incarceration and the prisoner re-entry program to begin the Adult Discussion class. All classes begin at 9:30 a.m. in the church parlor.

September 5, 2010“The Intention of Incarceration” will be presented by David Phillipy. The history of how societies have dealt with criminal offenders and what the purpose of incarceration and prisons are for today will be presented and discussed in the context of scripture and our Christian beliefs. Sunday, September 12, 2010“Prisoner Reentry Program” will be presented by Jerry Nail, Volunteer Chaplain at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. The Prisoner Reentry Program is a Session-approved ministry of Trinity. Jerry will show a brief video and describe how the Prisoner Reentry Program works. Inmates are mentored by volunteers prior to release and are supported post release by a sponsoring church. Jerry may also bring with him a successful released inmate who has been helped by the Reentry Program. Attendees are encouraged to bring men’s clothing that will be used by inmates leaving prison to help them in their reentry back into society. Jerry Nail will pick up these clothes and they will be made available to the released inmates who are being helped by the Prisoner Reentry Program.

September 26, 2010NaCoMe

September 5th is the start of the new Sunday School year! We look forward to seeing children of all ages returning to their classes and to Children’s Choir with Mary Virginia Bond. Melissa Custer will again be teaching our first through sixth grade children. This group will continue to use the wonderful “Way of the Child” curriculum. Cindy Turner will work with our preschoolers and the Nursery staff will care for younger children. Thanks to all who give their time and talents for our children. See you Sunday morning !

ADULT DISCUSSION CLASS: SEPTEMBER

Our annual time of fun, fellowship and spiritual renewal in the beautiful setting of NaCoMe, will be September 24 – 26. The cost is the same this year as in recent years, and the climbing wall and zip line will be available again for those who want to pursue them. Registration materials were mailed at the end of August. If you would like to receive a packet and are not on our mailing list, please call the church office at 297-6513, or pick one up in the East Hall.

The Christian Education Committee and our pastor, Heidi, have been hearing about desires for more Bible study opportunities at Trinity. Please be in touch with Judy Rye or Heidi about your ideas and hopes for Bible study: focus, time, place, frequency, etc. We are looking forward to more offerings to engage us with the rich Word of God in our plans for the future.

We need to get there in time to eat lunch, sign waivers and be ready by 1:00 p.m. Bring: lunch, bathing suit, towel, sunblock. We will eat dinner on the way back or at a local restaurant near the Ocoee.

Who are we?

Hey, youth! We are Leigh Bonner and Greg Gardner. Many of you recognize us from the recent Rally Day potluck, where we were honored to get to know you a lot better. But who are we, really?

This year, Trinity Youth Group invites and welcomes you to dig deeper into the question, “Who are we?” Together, we will explore who we are, whose we are, and who we’re made to be. In Sunday school, in recreation and fellowship, and in service, we’ll uncover and discover what it means to have an identity as a beloved child of God.

Join us as we explore and examine, together, these questions and more:

• What are we called to do, and who are we called to be?• Who is our Creator, and for what are we created?• What is God’s desire for our lives?• What is prayer? What does it look like? What is its value and importance?• What are our gifts and what is vocation? • What is meant by “called”?

We are thrilled to join Trinity’s youth leadership this year, and we are thankful for the opportunities ahead to learn more about who you are as beloved daughters and sons of God!

Joyfully,Greg and Leigh

SPECIAL NEEDS OFFERINGYou may have seen Dan Terry’s name in the news releases about the medical and mission workers who were recently killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan while on a medical mission trip. Dan was the father of Anneli Terry Nelson, the wife of the new pastor, Chris, at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church. Chris and Anneli are traveling to Kabul. Please hold them and their families in your prayers during this time of grief over this tragic loss of a good man who gave his life to serving others in a war-torn nation for over 30 years - in one mission or another helping people in this struggling country—and who deeply loved our sisters and brothers there whether they were Christian, or not. Never fearful, but trusting in Christ.

Emmanuel Presbyterian Church has begun a special fund to help with the expenses related to the travel and funeral arrangements for Dan, and to assist Chris and Anneli. This is a very difficult time for them, especially just as they were to arrive in Nashville. If you would like to be part of this “love offering,” you may send a check payable to Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, designated as a gift to Chris and Anneli Terry Nelson, at 9770 Highway 96, Nashville, TN 37221. Let’s welcome them to our presbytery and hold them in our loving care.

PRAYERS OF THANKSGIVINGFor the birth of Ronan Mark McNeely on August 4

For the joyous engagement of Ann Hicks to Brian Fields

For teachers, students, and church leaders as we begin a new church year

David Carlton will be away from our congrega-tion for the coming year. He is a visiting scholar at UNC Chapel Hill.

Also, David wants everyone to know that he has brought dishes and containers (from our sending of food to him during his recovery) to the church for return to their owners. Stop by to make your claim.

BEST WISHES, DAVID

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Flood Relief Volunteer Opportunit ies: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is actively serving our community through headquarters at Westminster Presbyterian Church. We have a lot of flood survivors who are ready for volunteer labor in order to take the next step in rebuilding their homes. There are many people asking for help right now. The needs include drywall, doors and trim, painting, pulling up subfloors, and mold remediation. If you would like to volunteer to serve on a work crew, e-mail [email protected]. If you are not available right away, don’t worry. We will be rebuilding for at least a year and maybe longer. You will have other chances to help!

Come join our team as we make a difference in the life of a family who will soon have a new home! On Saturday, September 18, Trinity volunteers will meet at the church at 6:45 a.m. to carpool or arrive on site at Timberwood by 7 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided as we help finish the house.

Ten volunteers are needed—contact John Folger at 419-0123 or [email protected] to register or for more info. We also need to raise $1200 to complete our $5000 sponsorship pledge. Contributions of all sizes are needed and appreciated. Checks can be made to TPC and designated “Habitat Build.”

After completing the home on Saturday, the dedication will be on Sunday, September 19, at 2 p.m. For more information or directions, you can check the website at www.habitatnashville. org.

Our resident chamber ensemble will play works by Lansky, Mellits, Mozart, and BrahmsThursday, September 2, at 7:30pm in the sanctuary.

Come for another wonderful performance, and help spread the word about this dynamic concert!

Donations will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Time, Treasure Planet&Stewardship of

Second Presbyterian ChurchNashville, Tennessee

Stewards on Planet Earth Exploring biblical and denominational foundations guiding our relationship with and stewardship of God’s earth; ecological concerns; the church’s creative responses, sharing models for earth care in congregational life, and fear some congregants have around issues of “environmentalism”.

Rev. Alan JenkinsDirector of Earth Covenant Ministry for Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, is a graduate of Presbyterian College in South Carolina, and Johnson C. Smith Seminary in Atlanta.

Stewards of Treasure Workshop addresses one of the most critically important and consistently problematic areas in the institutional Church today: the relationships between stewardship and fundraising, helping church members understand the true scope—and joy— of Christian stewardship.

Douglas HimesFounder and President of Douglas Himes Associates LLC, brings nearly 30 years of professional experience in nonprofi t management and governance, planned giving, funds development, and stewardship education, providing stewardship training for pastors and lay leaders in numerous denominations.

Stewards of Time Living a grace-fi lled 24/7: We have too little of it, but all of us get the same 24 hours each day. Workshop looks at history of and biblical perspectives on the Christian understanding of time and how best to spend this precious resource; focus on personal and practical ways to claim sacred time in daily living.

Rev. Liz Forney A retreat leader, teacher, and personal spiritual director (M.Div. Princeton Seminary, Certifi cate in Spiritual formation, Columbia Seminary) with a passion for the intersection of arts and spirituality.

NEWS FROM DANCING ON THE EDGEAfter reading Half the Sky by Nicolas Kristof, our Dancing on the Edge women’s book group was disturbed yet inspired by the stories of women in countries where being a women is difficult because of the lack of equal opportunity, job skills and education. Many of these women are survivors of war and have lost everything. Despite overwhelming hardships, many of these women succeed in building a better life for themselves and their families.

Motivated to help at least one woman, our group decided to sponsor a woman through Women for Women International. When matched with a sponsor, a woman is enrolled in a year long program that helps her learn skills that can help earn a living, feed her family, or buy needed medicine. Twelve members of our group each contributed a month’s sponsorship. We will write letters to our ”sister”, and, hopefully, receive letters from her.

We were matched with Josiane Murebwayire, a twenty-five year old woman in Rwanda. She is caring for two children. We eagerly await more information at Josiane in the coming months, and will feel that we have a sister in Rwanda. We trust that our sponsorship will grant her greater control over her life and help her create a better life for her and the children.

If you would like to know more about how you can help a woman through Women for Women International, ask me, another member of our book group, or go online at www. womenforwomen.org. —Frances Duvall
