FROM PASTOR DEBI Issue 8 Volume 65 August 2019 Well, we tried something new. Since June, we have tried having a more liturgical communion service. We tried this because there are those in our midst who miss the liturgy of the churches in which they grew up, and they wondered if we could use more liturgy in our worship? So, I pulled out the UCC Book of Worship, and adapted the communion service found inside. The first me we used the hymnbooks, and in July I made some changes in response to feedback and to the experience of confusion and awkwardness I perceived. Many people expressed their opinions to me, all construcve and helpful. The overwhelming response was that they would like to go back to sharing communion in our tradi- onal way. Two thoughts: It was good that we could try something different. I appreciate the willingness of folks to consider how we might change a part of our worship service that is central to our beliefs and our pre- ferred pracce. We are more flexible than I thought, and folks are paent with an experi- ment. The feedback I received was helpful, and gently expressed. Individuals took me to consider how they felt about the changes, and, importantly, why they felt the way they did about the chang- es. Were we uncomfortable with change because it was change, or because the changes made our experience of communion different? And did the change enhance the experience of communion, or did the change diminish that experience? What I am hearing is that many people would like us to return to our familiar way of sharing communion. That is what we will do. There are a few parts of the liturgy that I think made our communion service different in a good way, and I will integrate some of those elements this fall. One of the things I like most about being the pastor at Parkview UCC is the willingness of members of our community to express their opinions and concerns in a thoughul, direct manner. I appreciate it when people feel comfortable sharing with me their thoughts. I want to be the kind of pastor who can listen to concerns – both posive and negave – with an open mind and an inving presence. Your thoughts and opinions maer to me, and it means a lot to me when you are kind enough to tell me directly – either in person or in wring. It is a giſt to know what you think, and how you feel about choices I make, or ways in which I interact with the congregaon. Thank you for showing me once again that Parkview is a place that is open to trying something new, and helpful and trusng as we evaluate changes. Pastor Debi

FROM PASTOR DEBI

Issue 8 Volume 65 August 2019

Well, we tried something new.

The first time we used the hymnbooks, and in July I made some changes in response to feedback and to the experience of confusion and awkwardness I perceived. Many people expressed their opinions to me, all constructive and helpful. The overwhelming response was that they would like to go back to sharing communion in our tradi-tional way.

Two thoughts:

It was good that we could try something different. I appreciate the willingness of folks to consider how we might change a part of our worship service that is central to our beliefs and our pre-ferred practice. We are more flexible than I thought, and folks are patient with an experi-ment.

The feedback I received was helpful, and gently expressed. Individuals took time to consider how they felt about the changes, and, importantly, why they felt the way they did about the chang-es.

One of the things I like most about being the pastor at Parkview UCC is the willingness of members of our community to express their opinions and concerns in a thoughtful, direct manner. I appreciate it when people feel comfortable sharing with me their thoughts. I want to be the kind of pastor who can listen to concerns – both positive and negative – with an open mind and an inviting presence. Your thoughts and opinions matter to me, and it means a lot to me when you are kind enough to tell me directly – either in person or in writing. It is a gift to know what you think, and how you feel about choices I make, or ways in which I interact with the congregation. Thank you for showing me once again that Parkview is a place that is open to trying something new, and helpful and trusting as we evaluate changes.

We wanted to thank our Parkview UCC family

for all of the kind thoughts, healing prayers, and

beautiful cards after my Dad passed away at 68

yrs. (following a three-year fight with pancreatic

cancer). He had quite a send-off from many

fellow veterans, co-workers, and friends. It was

difficult to say goodbye to such a great guy at a

relatively young age, but we cherish the many

fond memories and know that his legacy lives on

in his four children and many grandchildren. For

those of you who are not on social media, here is

the message I posted on the day he passed.

With gratitude,

Shellie, Mike, Claire & Andrew Wendland

Christmas Social Thanks to Marilyn and Roger Appeldorn for again hosting this annual adult social event on Saturday, December 10th. Forty-one people attended and enjoyed wonderful fellowship and delicious food. The singing of carols really brought the spirit of Christmas into our hearts. I must say that the singing of the "12 Days of Christmas" was sung like no other year in memory. Janice Anderson again accompanied us on piano, so we thank her for her talent and patience. WE NEED YOU!

Sing to the Lord a New Song!

Do you enjoy singing the hymns on Sunday morning? Do you tap your feet to the music when the choir sings? Have you ever joined the choir in the singing of the “Hallelujah Chorus”?

If you answered “Yes” to ANY of these questions, WE CAN’T WAIT to see you at the first choir rehearsal! The Parkview Choir is looking for new (and returning!) members of all ages and voice types. Your enjoyment of singing is the only qualification for membership! We rehearse Wednesday evenings from September – May from 7:00-8:15”ish” and sing every Sunday except the last Sunday of each month. You DO NOT have to be available for every rehearsal and Sunday to join! (We have an open door policy. You come when you can come.) You DO NOT have to know how to read music to join! (Heather even makes recordings of your part to help you learn the music.) You DO NOT have to know what voice part you sing to join. (Heather can figure out what voice part is best for you). Our PUCC choir is one of the most dedicated groups and treasured parts of what makes Parkview special. We have LOADS OF FUN and so hope you will join us. Here are some important dates for you to put on your calendar today:

Wednesday, August 28, 2019: 6:00pm – Start of the year POTLUCK in the Fellowship Hall followed by our first rehearsal in the Sanctuary. (Bring a dish to share and your own beverage.)

Wednesday, September 4, 2019: 7:00pm – Rehearsal in the Sanctuary followed by TREATS! (Hey, singing is hard work! We enjoy treats the first Wednesday of the month.)

Sunday, September 8, 2018: The PUCC Choir is back in all of its glory to sing for the service.

Please see Heather Cogswell for further information or if you have any questions.

“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;

Make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, With trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn-- shout for joy before the Lord, the King.“

MISSION BOARD

DID YOU KNOW? A mid-year UPDATE from your Missions Board

We at PUCC have been reaching out to serve our local community and, through our state UCC, to serve na-tionally and internationally through many projects this year.

You may be surprised at the ways our church dollars, time, and talents have made an impact beyond our own membership. We are able to serve through the generous support of our members, the Women’s Fel-lowship ($1,750), and the Church Council ($1,000).

* Opportunities for youth involvement in Mission projects are marked with an asterisk.

About 15 years ago, Evelyn Wilson, a past member of Parkview, introduced us to a little boy named Benjemin who lived in the Philippines. This was through the Child Sponsorship Program run by Global Ministries. Evelyn would correspond with Benjemin through letters, and quite often our children would respond with letters and drawings they did during Sunday school. Benjemin always had a beautiful drawing on the paper that he wrote his letter on.

As you can see, he is still very much an artist, and it is lovely to see he is keeping in touch. He is a young man now, 21 years old, with a very strong faith. He and his family have been through a lot, especially flooding and hurricanes. We will try to find a way to display Benjemin's painting somewhere within our church.

The CE Board is considering sponsoring another child through Global Ministries, using our funds collected via the $1 offering plate collection to support this child. Any questions or comments, talk to one of the CE Board members.
