Dear CCU Ohana,
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!
Nothing else seems an appropriate beginning after the wonderful weekendwe've just enjoyed together over Easter. What a delight!
Wasn't Good Friday Blues Vespers fun??? We went out on a limb with thisnew and creative ministry and I think we can say it was a hit! Great music(thanks to Melody Heidel and Dale Machado), a great turnout (kudos tothose who brought guests!) and fabulous dessert to boot. What a specialand meaningful evening, one which has inspired me (and you too, I hope)to think about new ways we can combine our congregation's passion formusic, our spiritual practice and our outreach to the community.
Easter too, was such a special celebration. From my vantage point, everything seemed energized and celebratory. From the flowers (thanksBrennan's) to the music (thanks John Stiles, special musical guests, choirand its additional voices), from the good crowd gathered to the keikiactivities and festive potluck fellowship: everything seemed to reflect thegood news we were there to share. What a blessing.
In light of these recent high points, I wonder what else God might have in
April 2016 Ka Elele Aloha Page 1 of 17
store for us. Seriously: CCU's well of expertise and passion is so deep andour potential for creative ministry so great. I think this Easter season is theperfect time to consider what other unexpected and wonderful ministries wemight consider. The Easter season is all about deepening our awareness ofand reflection on the new life that draws us together in Christ, which makesit an appropriate time to consider how we might bear witness to that newlife in our own midst in new ways.
I hope you'll keep bringing your ideas, your passions, and your friends (!)into the mix so we can give the Spirit as much as possible to work with! Butin the meantime, thank you for your contributions to a lively holy season.
And Easter blessings to all of you,Liz

Looking Back and Forth!By Rosemary Allen
Back in the early 1960's two churches wereforming congregations on the windward slopes ofKailua. Christ Presbyterian Church and WindwardChristian Church eventually came together (inthe present building) as Christ Church Uniting -and lives on (since the late 1960's) in its Kailuahillside home. While the present church building was "goingup" the members carried equipment (chairs plusvaried equipment) to Kailua High Schoolauditorium for Sunday services - even musicalequipment. In 1966 our new church building wascompleted "up the hill" a little further - and we'vebeen there ever since! In 1974 we held a "formal" chartering ofChrist Church Uniting Disciples and Presbyteriansas CCU. We have remained so! Many people have "served" CCU throughthese years. You will recognize the names ofmany who have served us as pastors.

CCU Mission Spotlight onFamily Promise Hawai'i
April 2016 Ka Elele Aloha Page 12 of 17
The Family Promise mission is to mobilize existing community resourcesto aid families with children experiencing homelessness and help themtransition to sustainable independence.
Who they are...Family Promise of Hawai’i is a new and innovative program to helpfamilies with children escape homelessness. Founded in Hawaii in 2005,we opened up our first Family Center in Kailua and then in 2007, weexpanded to our second Family Center in Honolulu. We now run twointerfaith networks, one on the windward side and one in town.
They are there every step...We do this by developing, training, and supporting a network of interfaithcongregations whom host families quarterly. Each host site provides asafe place to sleep, good food, and generous hospitality. Guests stay at ahost site for a week, then move on to the next host site.
Help where it is neededDuring the day, guests work, pursue employment, attend school, or enrollin job training. A Family Center provides access to phones, mail, fax, acopier, showers, and laundry facilities. Three to five families (up to 14individuals) can be accommodated by each network at any given time. The program provides transportation to and from the host sites and theFamily Center.
Family Promise at CCUSAVE DATES FOR 2016 & PLEASE VOLUNTEER!
