Hello Burbank Parents and Guardians,

At last, October has arrived, changing winds, col-orful leaves, and fall temperatures. Time trans-cends quickly but the highlights of this school year will be captured in the pages of the Burbank Broadcast. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this edition of the Burbank Broadcast. We have much to share.

Character Counts!

As educators, it is our aspiration to guide and to nurture students, with that being the case; we will emphasize the importance of developing and maintaining good character. This year, we will be discussing the six Character Counts Pillars: trust-worthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, car-ing, and citizenship.

Each month, we will recognize special students who have demonstrated exceptional qualities of a particular Character Counts Pillar. This month we are saluting students who have demonstrated notable “trustworthiness”.

National Punctuation Day

Thanks to the organizational planning of two of Burbank’s finest, Ms. Summers and Mrs. Wilson, our students, teachers, and staff enjoyed fun-based educational activities on National Punctua-tion Day.

On Thursday, October 24th, our building was filled with hundreds of Jr. police officers! Wearing po-licemen caps and badges, the students patrolled the corridors with the quest being to correct sen-tences that displayed incorrect grammar usage. Of course, I joined the fun. Wearing my “law and order” gear, I patrolled the corridors as a true principal would.

A great day was had by all. The children had a blast! Pictures of the day’s event will be posted on Burbank’s website.

Kudos to Ms. Summers and Mrs. Wilson!

A huge round of applause is extended to all Bur-bank parents/guardians. On behalf of the teach-ers and staff, I thank you for ensuring that your children have arrived to school on time and have been ready and prepared to learn by 8:05 a.m. Students who are not in their seats and ready to learn by 8:05 a.m. are considered tardy.

On Thursday, October 8th, the classes that have accumulated three or fewer tardies during the month of September will be awarded a “Dress Down Day”.

Safety First

Although procedures appear to be flowing smoothly, I’d like to briefing review our morn-ing drop-off and dismissal procedures. Please adhere to these practices and proce-dures when school is in session. These practices and procedures have been imple-mented to ensure the safety of ALL students.

Please note:

Additionally, please be reminded that it is un-lawful to pass a school bus when a stop sign is extended. Our students unload school buses on 83rd Street upon arrival and load school buses on Linder at dismissal. When a stop sign is extended, cars are not permitted to go around school buses.

Please be mindful of cell phone usage in the school zone; cell phone usage in a school zone is illegal. Lastly, allow children to exit cars on the curbed side of the street.

Our school parking lot is not designated as a drop-off area for students. Signs are posted at the entrance of the parking lot. Vehicles are not permitted to enter the parking lot to drop-off children.

Please be patient, attentive drivers; we want to ensure the safety of all of our stu-dents.

Please adhere to these practices and proce-dures to ensure that the students of Burbank School are safe during arrival and dismissal times. Your cooperation is greatly appreciat-ed.

Map Testing

Students in grades kindergarten through six have completed fall Map Testing. Data gen-erated from the tests has been utilized to guide instruction. Analyzed data has also been utilized by teachers to select students who would benefit from offered supports. Ad-ditionally, teachers have conferenced with students to discuss test results and to help students set reasonable academic goals. Details of your child’s Map results will be sent home at a later date.

Lanyards and Identification Cards

All students have been issued a school iden-tification card that is in a protective plastic cover that is attached to an official school lanyard. Students are required to wear the school issued identification card and offi-cial school lanyard. The lanyard has a safety feature which allows the lanyard to breakaway in cases of emergency. Students should not cover or deface their identifica-tions cards. Markings or stickers placed on identification cards will make them inopera-ble. Replacement cost for an identification card, plastic cover, and lanyard is $5.00. Re-placement cost for a lanyard or protective plastic cover is $1.00.

Please ensure that your child is wearing his/her identification card each day.

Luther Burbank School will be closed on Monday, October 12, 2015 in observance of Columbus Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Please take a moment to discuss the historical contributions of Christopher Columbus with your child.

Burbank’s Firemen visit Burbank School

October is Fire Prevention Month and fire-men from Burbank’s Fire Department will visit Luther Burbank School. Students in grades kindergarten through three will attend a safe-ty assembly presented by Burbank’s Fire De-partment on Friday, October 16th. The fire-men will talk with the students about fire pre-vention and what to do in cases of emergen-cy. After their presentation, the firemen will monitor the school’s fire drill practices and offer recommendations. Please review and practice the evacuation plan that has been implemented in your home.

Principal’s Coffee Hour

Mark our calendar and plan to attend the Principal’s Coffee Hour on Tuesday, October 20th at 9:00 a.m. Meet new parents and dis-cuss hot topics!!

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week will be recognized on Monday, October 26th through Friday, Octo-ber 31st. During the week, the students, teachers, and staff will take a pledge to stay drug free and to say “no” to bullying. Mrs. Shoudis, Burbank’s social worker, has planned many events for the week. In addi-tion to the events that have been planned, Burbank’s PFC will distribute stickers and

trinkets to remind students to stay drug free and to say “no” to bullying.

All students will receive a letter that will out-line the events that are planned for Red Rib-bon Week. Students who elect not to partici-pate in the events should wear their school uniforms.

Report Cards

The last day of the first quarter of the 2015-2016 school year is Wednesday, October 21, 2015. Report cards will be sent home with students on Wednesday, October 28, 2015. If have questions regarding your child’s re-port card, please contact your child’s teacher (s).

Costume Balls

Information which details the fall Costume Balls has been sent home with your child. The Mother/Son Ball will be held on Tues-day, October 27th. The Father/Daughter Ball is scheduled for Wednesday, October 28th. Please don’t miss out on the fun. Make your reservations today!

Fall Celebration

On Friday, October 30, 2015, Luther Bur-bank School will host its Fall Day Celebra-tion. Students will be permitted to dress cas-ually on this day. Students may wear sea-sonal or fall colored clothing. Jeans will also be permitted. All attire must be suitable for the school environment. Your child’s teacher will send home a letter outlining the events that will be planned in your child’s class-room.

BURBANK BROADCAST

Students wishing to wear costumes during the celebration may go home during the lunch period to change into their costumes or may bring their costumes to school. Costumes must be appropri-ate for the school environment. Look-a-like weap-ons, make-up, and imitation blood should not be brought to school. Students may apply make-up and imitation blood at home.

Our traditional school-wide parade will begin at 12:45 p.m.

Uniformed Dress Policy

Please review the Uniformed Dress Policy. The policy appears in the Parent/Student Handbook. It is also posted on the district’s website. The document specifies that students wear white or light blue collared shirts, tops, and blouses. Navy blue is not an authorized color for shirts, tops, or blouses.

Additionally, students are not permitted to wear jean like pants, cargo pants, jogging pants, leg-gings, or pants with athletic stripes. Likewise, hooded sweaters and hooded sweatshirts are not permitted.

Sweaters and sweatshirts must be light blue, white, or navy. Black is not an authorized color for sweaters and sweatshirts.

Shorts are Gone!

From October 1st until April 1st, students are not permitted to wear shorts unless permission has been granted.

Lost and Found Friday

The last Friday of each month has been designat-ed as Lost and Found Friday.

Items in our lost and found will be placed on a table for students to claim. Unclaimed items will be donated to a charity.

Supply Fees

The deadline for paying supply fees is quickly ap-proaching. As a courtesy to our families, the last

day to pay supply fees has been extended to Fri-day, October 9th. The fee for grades K-6 is $75 and the fee for grades 7-8 is $85. A late fee of $25 will be added to all unpaid accounts after October 9th.

If you have not submitted payment, please visit our school office or submit payment online via E-pay.

We have been in school for about one month already and although we have many months to go, it has been a great start! We are excited to see what our Kindergarteners will accomplish this year. At this point, we are halfway through our ABC Boot camp where we focus on one letter a day practicing its name, sound, and how to write it. Upon completion of Boot Camp, our reading program, Wonders, will be focusing on one letter each week.

Our popcorn words have also been introduced. The children get excited when they see one of our words in our classroom environ-ment. Encourage your child to identify popcorn words they see outside of the classroom. Please remember to practice these words

with your child every night and sign their envelope calendar.

In math, we have been focusing on positional language and num-bers 0-10. Students should be able to count, write, and identify numbers 0-10. Thank you for taking the time to practice these things at home!

The Kindergarteners are continu-ing to learn the routines and pro-cedures of school. One of those procedures is having you check their folders to look for homework and important papers that get sent home. Please remember to do this daily.

There will be two Make-and-Takes this year in Kindergarten.

A Make-and-Take is a day when parents come to school in the afternoon to join their child in making educational resources to use at home. The dates of these days will be announced once they are on the schedule. It will be the highlight of your child’s day to have you at school with them. Please make every effort to attend. Thank you!

First Grade News The beginning of first grade has been very busy with so much learning going on. The students spent the first few days of the year getting used to our schedules and routines. We have been working on short vowels and sight words in read-ing. We have been working in our guided reading groups. In math we are working on addi-tion and subtraction. Remember to be practicing your child's addi-tion facts nightly. Knowing our math facts automatically is so important. We look forward to watching all our first graders grow this year! We are off to a great start! 2nd Grade has been busy, busy, busy! We continue to discuss addition and subtrac-tion strategies in Math. Math facts (both addi-tion and subtraction) should continue to be practiced every night at home. Our goal is to memorize our addition and subtraction facts by the end of the school year.

In Reading, we are continuing to enhance

and increase our vo-cabulary word base, and have been learn-ing strategies such as close reading, decod-ing words, key details, and story elements. Please encourage your child to read every day at home.

We are looking forward to going to the County Line Apple Orchard on Thursday, September 24th. We can’t wait to pick some yummy, de-licious apples! We

have been learning about apples, apple parts, and the story of Johnny Appleseed to enhance our field trip experience.

Second Grade News

Third Grade News adults with “Yes ma’am, yes sir!” along with a curtsey or bow for their teacher! It was great to see them en-joy learning through real life experiences. We have been follow-ing the Common Core Standards for Reading, Grammar, Spelling, and Math. The classes have been getting ac-quainted with the Reading Wonders text-book, guided reading expectations and rota-tions, and the rigorous curriculum. In math we have worked with place value, addition strate-gies, and addition properties. As we con-tinue our math lessons will transfer into sub-traction strategies, tell-ing time and elapsed time. Please continue to study basic addition and subtraction facts with your child. We ask that you are signing

assignment notebooks nightly as well as checking that your child has completed their homework. All classes require nightly reading and recording of a summary in either their Reading Re-sponse Journal or Reading Log. We ap-preciate the support from the families and the relationships we’ve developed!

Fall is among us and third grade is “falling” into place. Students are mastering the pro-cedures and becoming accustomed to the ex-pectations in each of their classes. We have had a busy beginning of the school year, jam packed with exciting lessons. We have watched beans sprout in Science, traveled back to the 1800’s as we visited Naper Set-tlement and learned how settlers lived. The students had two favor-ite parts of the field trip that were; the live demonstration by the Black Smith, who made an iron leaf hook as well as learning in an 1800’s classroom. Our gentlemen were wonderful and full of chivalry as they al-lowed ladies first all day long. Boys and girls both answered

The 4th graders are off to a busy start. Just take a look at what we are doing!

In Social Studies, the 4th graders are studying the Regions of the United States, beginning with the Southwest Region. They are learning about coasts, canyons, deserts, oil, and ranching.

The students will also be study-ing climates, natural resources, maps, cultures and customs, economics, government, citizen-ship, and technological advanc-es of the United States Regions. In Math, we have been identify-ing place value to the 1 millions place, reviewing addition and subtraction, solving word prob-lems, and rounding numbers. We are busy studying the life

cycles of plants and animals in Science Class. In Reading, we are answering questions after we read, by re-reading the passage and looking for “text evidence”. We have worked with the genres, Fairy Tale and Realistic fiction. Grammar has been fun, review-ing the 4 types of sentences, fragments, and subjects and predicates! It is important that students proof-read their classwork and home-work, checking for correct capital-ization, punctuation, and sen-tence formation before turning their work in. Please check your child’s folder each day for papers and notes

The 2015-2016 school year is off to a wonder-ful start in 5th grade! The students in each class are adjusting well to having lockers and making transitions throughout the day. Also, they are enjoying the responsibility of being lunch monitors for the younger stu-dents. To continue in your student's' growth, please remind your 5th grade child to practice math facts every night, read at least 30 minutes per night, and check to make sure his or her assignment notebooks are filled in every night. Welcome Back 6th Graders!

The 6th graders have had a won-derful start to the year. We are so about this year, the students seem eager to be back to school and have adjusted wonderfully to 6th grade! The students should be reading at least 20 minutes a night and to keep up with their monthly reading incen-tive sheet.

6th grade has just finished up their first unit in math on number values, decimals, divisibility, fractions and are onto ratios and proportions. Please practice math facts at home by using multiplication flash cards. This

will benefit your students greatly in the upcoming math and sci-ence units when they will be studying the metric system.

The students have just finished up the first three sections in the science book. Students will know be working on the metric system and how it is used in science and real life situations. Experiments here we come!!!

Students are working hard on a jigsaw project in Social Studies. They are learning all about differ-ent religions and putting together a PowerPoint as well as a visual display to show all of their infor-mation and research. Students have been working really hard on

this project. We are very proud of them!

Sixth Grade News

Welcome back Burbank School students and families! It’s hard to believe we’ve been in school a month al-ready! We started off the school year with some literacy assessments and have since moved into the computer lab to focus on the technology portion. I am still using the point system for good behavior. Twenty points earns the class a computer time, outside time, etc. A few classes are very close! Please remember, if you need to get in touch with me, the best way is via email ([email protected]). Here’s to an excellent school year! We can, we will, we must be successful!! Since I do not have enough time in class to showcase all of our wonderful books, I wanted to use this space to spotlight a book each month.

This month’s book, geared toward 5th and 6th graders, is titled Wonder by R.J. Pala-cio (reading level: 4.8, interest level: 4-8, AR points: 11). Wonder is about a boy, Auggie, who was born with facial abnormalities. He is homeschooled until 4th grade and then goes to 5th grade at a private school with his peers. Here, he faces chal-lenges like bullying and wants nothing more than to be treated like a regular boy. This book teaches middle school students about acceptance, courage, and com-passion. SEPTEMBER SPOTLIGHT Q: How old are you and when is your birthday? A: My birthday is July 12th and I am old enough to be a teacher! Q: When do you think you are going to get married? Will you have kids? A: I am getting married next September! I am very excited and then one day I will have kids. Q: Who was your favorite teacher when you were in school? A: My favorite teacher was Ms. Stephens. She was my second grade teacher who taught me to love learning. Q: How many years have you been teaching? A: This is my 4th year of teaching. I have been teaching 4th grade for three years and I love it! Q: What’s your favorite color? Animal? Candy? Song? A: My favorite color is green because it reminds me of Ireland. My favorite animal is a hippo because they are so cute. My favorite candy is ANYTHING with peanut butter in it. I have a brother four years older than me who used to let me play video games with him just so he could beat

A: I wash my dog at home and she does not like it. When I say “Maggie, time to take a bath,” she runs away from me! Q: What is your favorite holiday? A: My favorite holiday is Christmas. I really like looking at all the Christmas lights and spending so much time with my

family. Q: Who is your favorite basketball player? A: My favorite basketball player is Michael Jordan. Obviously!! That’s what happens when you’re the best. Q: What do you like about teaching us? A: I love everything about teaching. I really don’t know if I could pick one thing. Q: Do you know why the sky is blue? A: Great question! Here’s what Google had to say about that: A clear cloudless day-time sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they

scatter red light. When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colors because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight.

Whether you are returning to Burbank School or are new to the Bobcat family, the PFC (Parent Faculty Club) would like to welcome you! My name is Stash Stefanek and I am proud to be serving as President of the PFC for the 2015-2016 school year. I’d also like to welcome aboard our new Vice President, Dan Vana, and welcome back our veteran Secretary and Treasurer, Lorena Wong and Jen Lamb. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled year!

We held our first Bingo night on September 4th. I believe this was our biggest bingo night yet. Thank you to all who came out and played and/or volunteered. I hope you all had as much fun as we did!!

On September 17th the PFC hosted a kindergarten ice cream social. This was simply our way of welcom-ing some of the new families to Burbank School and getting reacquainted with some of our existing fami-lies. Special thanks to our amazing kindergarten teachers Ms. Lucenti, Ms. Noha and Ms. O’Connell and our wonderful principal Mrs. Walker-Hood for taking time to come enjoy some ice cream with us. I am not sure who enjoyed the ice cream more, the parents or the kids. Thank you to all who attended.

We have completed our first fundraiser of the year (Popcorn Palace). With your help we have raised over $2,900. This money will help fund PFC sponsored events throughout the course of the year. Thank you to everyone who helped support our first fundraiser of the year. Be on the lookout of our next fundraiser in November.

The PFC will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair during Parent Teacher Conferences, November 24th & 25th. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the PFC at [email protected] or leave a note in the PFC mailbox.

Spirit Wear is sold year round. Order forms can be found in the monthly newsletter or in the school of-fice. Get prepared for the cold weather and order your winter scarfs and hats. Stay warm and show your school spirit at the same time!

If your family is not currently a member of the PFC, we urge you to join! Together we have the power to make school a greater experience for our children. Welcome back!

Our number one priority is your child’s health, safety, and well-being! As you get back into the routine of school remember the tips below to ensure your child’s healthy success:

Please make sure your child’s health log card is completed accurately and returned to the health office. When there are changes to telephone numbers, email addresses, emergency contacts, etc. please be sure to update the health log with your Health Aide.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives our brains and bodies the energy we need to start the learning day. Never skip breakfast!

There is NO SHARING FOOD AT SCHOOL. Please remind your child that they are to eat only from their own lunch. There are children with allergies, intolerances, and special diets that prohibit sharing!

School-aged children should get at least 10 hours of sleep per night. Sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

Please discuss all medical concerns (medications, illnesses, allergies, immunizations, etc.) with your school’s Health Aide or the District Nurse.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION

Burbank School has an active core of PFC volunteers and would love to have you join us in providing your children with additional activities and benefits to enrich their elementary school experience. There are many ways to be involved:

• Join the PFC and let your voice be heard. Even if you can’t be actively involved, your PFC membership still

benefits your children.

• Volunteer to help at PFC events – a couple of hours of your time can help so much and it’s fun, too!

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES FUNDED Through the continued support of our members, the PFC is able to fund a number of programs, activities and services directly benefiting your children, including the following:

• Book Fair • Holiday Shop • Spirit Wear Sales

• Educational Assemblies • Kindergarten Round Up • Spotlight Teacher of the Month

• Family Bingo Night • Mega Event Day • Spring Fling Family Dance

PFC MEETINGS

PFC meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in the lunch room, unless otherwise noted. Please join us! Meeting attendance is not necessary to be a member. MEMBERSHIP FEE Dues for PFC Membership are $5.00 per family. Please complete this form (one per family) and return it with your $5.00 dues (checks are preferred and payable to “Burbank School PFC”). As a thank you for joining the PFC your family will receive a free calendar, decorated with some of our students amazing art work.
