History lesson for Today!

The underlying concept of cloud computing dates back to the 1950s, when large-scale mainframe became available in academia and corporations, accessible via thin clients/terminal computers.""

To make more efficient use of costly mainframes, a practice evolved that allowed multiple users to share both the physical access to the computer from multiple terminals as well as to share the CPU time. This eliminated periods of inactivity on the mainframe and allowed for a greater return on the investment. ""The practice of sharing CPU time on a mainframe became known in the industry as time-sharing.""

History lesson for Today – Origins of “Cloud Computing”!

John McCarthy opined in the 1960s that "computation may someday be organized as a public utility.“  Almost all the modern-day characteristics of cloud computing (elastic provision, provided as a utility, online, illusion of infinite supply) are present in this model.""

Other scholars have shown that cloud computing's roots go all the way back to the 1950s when scientist Herb Grosch postulated that the entire world would operate on dumb terminals powered by about 15 large data centers!"

There really is a definition!!

National Institute of Standards and Technology definition : ""

"“Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.”"

Cloud as a Service – Cloud Computing & “The Cloud”!

“THE” Cloud""

•  For years we have talked about the cloud or the network cloud to refer to the internet or some private network (MPLS, Frame Relay, ATM etc.)."

•  We have called services such as network based firewall, “Firewall in the cloud” If it was outside of the customers walls, it was “in the cloud”."

"

“Cloud computing” and “In the cloud” are not synonymous."

THE DATA CENTER CAN BE FULLY VIRTUALIZED, AND THE FUTURE OF SOFTWARE-DEFINED DATA CENTERS IS COMING FASTER THAN YOU THINK. LATELY, COMPANIES SUCH AS VMWARE AND HP HAVE BEEN FOND OF THE TERM SOFTWARE-DEFINED DATA CENTER (OR SDDC). WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND THE HARDWARE AT THE OFFICE? AT ITS CORE, A SOFTWARE-DEFINED DATA CENTER FREES THE APPLICATION LAYER FROM HARDWARE LAYER.  ERIC KNORR WRITES ABOUT WHAT A HUGE LEAP IT IS, “JUST AS THE WORLD CHANGED WHEN ISOLATED NETWORKS BECAME THE INTERNET, COMPUTING IS ABOUT TO MAKE A QUANTUM LEAP TO ‘DATA CENTERS’ ABSTRACTED FROM HARDWARE THAT MAY RESIDE IN MULTIPLE PHYSICAL LOCATIONS.”08-13-12!

SSAE 16 Definition:  Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) No. 16 is an attestation standard put forth by the Auditing Standards Board (ASB) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) that addresses engagements undertaken by a service auditor for reporting on controls at organizations (i.e., service organizations) that provide services to user entities, for which a service organization's controls are likely to be relevant to a user entities internal control over financial reporting (ICFR).""SSAE 16 effectively replaces Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 (SAS 70) for service auditor's reporting periods ending on or after June 15, 2011. Two (2) types of SSAE 16 reports are to be issued, a Type 1 and a Type 2.  Additionally, SSAE 16 requires that the service organization provide a description of its "system" along with a written assertion by management."""

Service Organization Control (SOC) 1 reports will be conducted in accordance with Statement on Standards for Attestation Engagements (SSAE) No. 16, Reporting on Controls at a Service Organization.  SSAE 16 is effectively replacing the SAS 70 auditing standard for reporting periods ending on or after June 15, 2011.  Much like SAS 70, SSAE 16 provides two (2) reporting options; Type 1, a report on a service organization's system and the suitability of the design of controls", while an SSAE 16 Type II Report is officially a "Report on management's description of a service organization's system and the suitability of the design and operating effectiveness of controls".  "

Cloud as a Service – The Future!

Google CIO Ben Fried Says Cloud Tipping Point Is At Hand!

The economics of cloud computing are driving down the cost structure of business so far and so fast that it’s scary, Google CIO Ben Fried says."

"

“It deeply disturbed me … in 2006, 2007 consumer companies were forcing efficiencies on a scale never seen before,” Fried said."

"

The economics of the cloud do more than lower costs. They change the structure of businesses and markets, especially at Google itself, according to Fried. "

"

The ripple effects of cloud computing are far from over. Until now, cloud computing has been mostly about the distribution of applications. “The next wave” of cloud computing will enable the sharing of the environment to run those applications, Fried said. “You will be able to take advantage of what we had to build in order to create those applications,” Fried said."

"
