No. 37 24th November 2016 from Sonya ... Brighton Primary school has commenced a partnership with engineering students from Monash University. This partnership was initiated by BPS this year to reflect the minister for Education James Merlino’s pursuit of excellence for The Education State. This involves pursuing and achieving excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). “In the Education State, we know it is vital to equip Victorian learners – of all ages and backgrounds with the STEM skills and capabilities they need now, and for the future. We want to ensure Victorians can participate in high quality and engaging STEM learning experiences, with access to leading-edge resources and excellent teaching.” (STEM in the Education State - 2016) Over the last 2 weeks we have had our grade 4 and 5 students experimenting with programming and robotics in their classrooms at school. This has been facilitated by students from Monash University. Every session has been well received by all. Please find below some reflections and photos from our students. Sam 5A I learned how to connect to the robot and give the robot instructions to move in different directions. I found this a lot of fun and this lesson inspired me too! Ingrid 4C I learned that you can make a robot do really fun and complex stuff with an easy to use program. I also learned that you can create any robot from Lego. Flynn 5B We got to program robots and played with them. They gave us a challenge to program it to go 90 degrees in 3 seconds and more movements and we all accomplished it! Nadine 4A I learnt a lot about coding and how robots work. This is really fun and you can make robots do anything if you download a project onto them. I found this interesting and on the laptop you can make as many commands as possible. Lola 5C This was an experience we have never had before, I hope to have it again and learn more about Robotics. Ava 5D On Thursday 17th of Nov, Gr 4 had a small taste of engineering from ‘Robogals Monash’. Everybody enjoyed it and loved programing their robots. It was programmed through a computer that could change anything from speed to sound! It was an amazing experience and a great link for grade 4’s and the unit of inquiry about how technology creates opportunities. We learned a lot, we also enjoyed the experience. No. 37 24th November 2016

from Sonya ... Brighton Primary school has commenced a partnership with engineering students from Monash University. This

partnership was initiated by BPS this year to reflect the minister for Education James Merlino’s pursuit of excellence for

The Education State. This involves pursuing and achieving excellence in science, technology, engineering and

mathematics (STEM).

“In the Education State, we know it is vital to equip Victorian learners – of all ages

and backgrounds – with the STEM skills and capabilities they need now, and for the

future. We want to ensure Victorians can participate in high quality and engaging

STEM learning experiences, with access to leading-edge resources and excellent

teaching.” (STEM in the Education State - 2016)

Over the last 2 weeks we have had our grade 4 and 5 students experimenting with

programming and robotics in their classrooms at school. This has been facilitated by

students from Monash University. Every session has been well received by all. Please

find below some reflections and photos from our students.

It was great fun and I think everybody loved it, they

taught us how to code the robot and make it go in

different directions. Lachie 4B

It was really fun and exciting and we all learnt a lot

about robotics and how to control and program

them. Thanks for coming. Sam 5A

I learned how to connect to the robot and give the

robot instructions to move in different directions. I

found this a lot of fun and this lesson inspired me

too! Ingrid 4C

I learned that you can make a robot do really fun

and complex stuff with an easy to use program. I

also learned that you can create any robot from

Lego. Flynn 5B

We got to program robots and played with them.

They gave us a challenge to program it to go 90

degrees in 3 seconds and more movements and

we all accomplished it! Nadine 4A

I learnt a lot about coding and how robots work.

This is really fun and you can make robots do

anything if you download a project onto them. I

found this interesting and on the laptop you can

make as many commands as possible. Lola 5C

This was an experience we have never had before,

I hope to have it again and learn more about

Robotics. Ava 5D

On Thursday 17th of Nov, Gr 4 had a small taste of

engineering from ‘Robogals Monash’. Everybody

enjoyed it and loved programing their robots. It was

programmed through a computer that could

change anything from speed to sound! It was an

amazing experience and a great link for grade 4’s

and the unit of inquiry about how technology

creates opportunities. We learned a lot, we also

enjoyed the experience. Gus, Enzo and Charlie 4D
