“Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19 God’s word comes to his people as he prepares to lead them home from exile. Though they have been carted off to Babylon, God speaks through the prophet Isaiah, assuring them that he is already preparing to do a new thing. This is the sort of God we worship. A God who is always up to something, even when we do not yet perceive it—a God who is in the business of liberation, new hope, and new life! From the very beginning we see that this God we worship is creative, calling creation into being and forming humans for relationships with God, one another, and the earth. When those relationships fall apart, God is not afraid to try something new, establishing covenants with people so that through them the world might be blessed. And, finally, through Christ, God comes into the world so that all humans might be redeemed. God’s purpose has always been to be in redemptive relationship with humanity, to partner with humans to bless the entire world. And through setback after setback because of our faithlessness, God remains resilient and relentless in his pursuit of that goal. In the same way, the Church has been called to be innovative and creative in the ways that it lives out its gospel calling. As Christ’s body on earth, we are called by God to use what we have been given to bless our world. We do that through our advocacy, through our ministries, through our mission work, and through our own commitment to growing in faith. Again and again we are reminded that we do not serve a God who is content with the way things are. And so we cannot become content or complacent either. Instead, we must find new and imaginative ways to connect with our community and our world, joining God in the work of healing, restoration, and love. I am excited about some of the ways that I see our church engaging in that new work. I see Faith and Arts Camp for children, a new way of doing Vacation Bible School that seeks to go deeper, investing in the spiritual formation of children over the course of an entire month. I see a capital campaign that seeks not only to address deferred maintenance but to dream of a new educational space that can more adequately house our preschool, our children’s ministries, and our missions endeavors. This new CEB will be a ministry hub. It will be handicap accessible so that everyone can join us in our work. It will create more space for WATTS guests. It will have a better kitchen for our feeding ministries. And it will create more space for Sunday school classes. Again and again God calls us to join him in doing a new thing. I am proud to serve at a church that is not afraid to answer the call! Youth Ministry

From Passport Mission Camp

“My grace is enough for you, because power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9a

I am writing this column from Passport Missions Camp at Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Over the past few years in youth ministry I have become quite familiar with bring youth to camp in this setting. However, what makes this trip so special is that this is my first trip to Passport Missions with FBC Winchester.

Our youth are having an amazing time. The theme of this year’s camp is “Enough” and focuses on how Jesus provides us with all we need. Our youth (and even us adults) are used to a world where we are constantly being told we are not “enough.” You don’t look good enough. You don’t feel good enough. You don’t have enough stuff. If we believe this lie we end up believing that we are not enough. But God has a better story of grace and hope that says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

This theme undergirds the entire camp experience. On the mission sites, in Bible study, in worship, in our personal and church group devotions we are being reminded that God is enough and that God satisfies us. We hope to bring this good news back home as we continue our life together at FBC Winchester and in our community.

Pounding at the Picnic

The Caudle family is so grateful for literally an entire car full of home goods that we received as part of our “Pounding the Pastor.” We are especially grateful for Patsy Stainback and others who helped organize this gifting. We remain grateful to serve alongside you all here in Winchester.

Log College Project

The Log College Project Grant for Youth Ministry will be submitted by July 1. We should find out if we are admitted to the second stage of the grant by August 1. I am very hopeful. Thanks for all your support and prayer!

Children’s Ministry

Some of you may be wondering how our Faith & Arts camp is different from VBS programs of the past. In the

previous Tie article, I talked about the importance of reaching every child according to how they learn. This

month I wanted to share a little about what they will be learning!

Weekly themes:

July 5th- Soil & Seed – We are planted! What can we do with where we are?

July 12th- Water- We Replenish. Taking time to restore, but also, don’t be a drain!

July 19th- Harvest- We Share. You don’t need to have an abundance to share what you have.

July 26th- Animals- We care. Taking care of the earth is good for nature, including the animals that live outdoors!

Scripture we will be diving into:

Luke 8:4-9 | Matthew 13:31-32 | Exodus 17:1-7 | Mark 1:4-12 |

Ruth 2:1-18 | Luke 9:10-17 | Exodus 3:1-10 | Luke 15:4-6

I am proud of the program we have created and look forward to sharing it with our volunteers and children!

Join us for our kickoff event on Sunday, July 1, at 12:15 PM in the CEB.

Attend Church Where You Vacation – Vacation is all about having new experiences and breaking out of your rou-tine. That can mean a lot of things, big and small – parasailing, rock climbing and trying new cuisine. So why not try a new church? The truth is, we feel the most comfortable and safe when we know the routine, customs, and attendees at the church we regularly attend. So, when we go on vacation, especially in another country, we may choose to skip church. Attending a church where you vacation is an excellent way to experience the native culture of the city or country in a way that is unadulterated by tourism. You may see stunning historic buildings or admire humble cultural roots; you may hear local music or learn local traditions, but you will most certainly take in the authentic local vibe of your chosen vacation destination.

While you are away, your contribution to FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH continues regularly if you have signed up for ON LINE GIVING or BANK Processing.

Thank you for your faithfulness.

Lori’s “Grace Notes”

My Country, ‘Tis of Thee

My country ‘tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing;

Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride,

From ev’ry mountain side Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love:

I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills;

My heart with rapture thrills Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom’s song;

Let Mortal tongues awake, Let all that breathe partake;

Let rocks their silence break, The sound prolong.

Our fathers’ God, to thee, Author of liberty,

To Thee we sing;

Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;

Protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King!

This patriotic hymn was written by Samuel Francis Smith in 1831. He was one of the outstanding Baptist preachers of that time. Born in Boston, Massachusetts and graduating from Harvard, he served several very large Baptist churches throughout the North East. When he was just 24 years old, a friend, Lowell Mason, gave him a copy of a German patriotic poem, which translates as “God Bless our Native Land”. Samuel was so moved by this poem, that he thought our young nation needed its own stirring poem with music. He completed it in a month, and it was set to an international tune originating from England that was over 200 years old.

On the following 4th of July in 1831, “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” was performed by Samuel’s Children’s Choir from the church he was serving, Park Street Congregational Church of Boston, Mass. It was so well received, that it quickly spread throughout our young country, and is still well-known today!

View From the Ridge

Summer has arrived! HRR kicked off the summer with the First Baptist Church Picnic on the 9th. What a great day with lots of fun and activities it was, at least until the storm blew through. This year we saw the return of the HRR Closest to the Pin contest. Thank you to Paul Knittle for organizing that activity and congratulations to Stephen McCalley for winning the Closest to the Pin award. New activities this year included a mini golf hole and a football toss. It is our hope to add more activities for the picnic as well as our visiting groups. Thank you to all those that helped prepare for the picnic and make it a great success.

The FBC picnic was the debut of the HRR putt-putt course. The putt-putt course will be located where the pool was. Thank you to Paul Knittle for designing, building and sponsoring the first hole of our Bible based course. We are looking for families, individuals or Sunday School classes that would like to sponsor a hole. If you are interested in sponsorship or donating, please feel free to email: [email protected] or call the office for more details.

Mark your calendars for September 14th and 15th. HRR will be holding our first annual yard sale on Friday and Saturday and our 2nd Pancake and sausage breakfast on Saturday. All proceeds will be used to purchase new chairs for the lodge and chapel. So, gather your unused and unwanted items and contact Melissa to make arrangements to drop them off, or have them picked up. We will begin collection of items the second week of August. If you would like to volunteer to help with one of these events, send an email to [email protected].

This summer, HRR will be hosting hundreds of youth and adults. From all across the country and around the world. We ask that you pray for our staff and for a great summer so that HRR can continue to make an impact on God’s kingdom through your ministry.

In His Service,

Melissa Engler
