From the Assistant Principal Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

It seems like a million years has passed when I look at photos of when I was at

school. Education has changed so much since I began school at St Patrick’s, West

Bundaberg in 1974. I remember solid heavy wooden desks with a hole on the right-

hand side; this hole was the place where small ceramic bottles filled with ink were

placed. I remember sitting in these desks that were constructed for two students

to sit side-by-side in; boys always had to sit next to a girl. And I remember sitting

in these desks that were nailed into the wooden floor of the classroom and always

faced the teacher, who always stood at the front of the room, in front of the

blackboard.

I recently received a phone call from a parent who asked an excellent question

about the reasons why some teachers had children sitting in couches, standing at

high desks and some even sitting on the floor. The reason I replied, is because kids

learn better.

To be honest my answer was a bit longer than one sentence but in essence, that

sentence sums it up. Classrooms haven’t changed much since the 13th century and

while the prevalent notion might be “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, we have

discovered through educational research that the way the classroom is set up can

have a massive influence on how well a child learns.

When I went to school we used books, computers were very new and technology

was something we would see in science fiction movies. My wildest dreams about

technology didn’t even come close to what has actually happened. I saw this quote

on social media and it, in a funny way, almost sums up what I mean.

“If someone from the 1950’s suddenly appeared today, what would

be the most difficult thing to explain to them about life today?

I possess a device, in my pocket, that is capable of accessing the

entirety of information known to humankind. I use it to look at picture

of cats and get in argument with strangers.”

Imagine what a Leonardo da Vinci or a Marie Curie could have done with what we have!

The way technology has changed has meant that schools need to change the way we do things. Yes, children still need

to learn to read and to communicate through writing and become competent at numeracy but we’re discovering that

with technology and the benefits of research, schools can make some changes that make learning easier for kids. One

of the ways is through a flexible furniture approach. Some kids learn better when they’re standing, some kids learn

better when they’re moving, some learn better when they’re given a choice about where and how they learn.

No one learns better when they do nothing but sit all day, listen and watch a person talk at them.

I know this.

I love learning and was recently at ACU doing a subject (on a weekend) where the lecturer stood at the front of the

room, with a power point and spoke…with the exception of break times, for five hours. Keep in mind that I was there

because I wanted to be but I was looking out the window and was struggling to focus after 20 minutes.

We, as educators, are working to teach kids who are;

Self-directing Communicating Negotiating Collaborating Working in teams Respecting diversity Behaving ethically Conceptualising Acquiring knowledge Thinking critically Solving problems Taking risks Innovating Working creatively Creating knowledge

Learning is enhanced, deepened and made more relevant when connected learning spaces provide opportunities for:

active and interactive participation collaborative project work information retrieval and sharing discussion and presentation production of new knowledge teacher and student-led activities connection with experts local and global networks

Helping students develop the wonderful attributes above through the powerful learning examples I’ve listed cannot happen anywhere near as well, if at all, if they’re sitting all day in a desk that faces the front where a teacher just talks and writes on a whiteboard.

I know this too!

Have a wonderful week,

Paul

Assistant Principal Religious Education Dear Staff, The Religious Life of our school plays a very significant role in shaping how we gather and celebrate special times within the year, not only in our faith story, but also the many chapters of our school story. Within each week there are many moments – sometimes big and obvious and at other times, simple and unassuming, that contribute to the religious experience of students, staff and parents. We know that children learn by example – they learn about our Catholic story by the ways we take time and space to pray; by the ways we celebrate; by the ways we honour stories from scripture and our religious traditions. Children also learn about how to relate to others by the way adults model this in our work at STM. Thank you to our staff for their commitment and the powerful ways they contribute the lives of our young people. Our value for this week is humility – it can be simply defined as marked by modesty, meekness and with an unassuming attitude. When you are humble you know yourself deeply so that you can have a strong conviction to be a person that respects others and honours them in genuine and caring ways. Jesus is our model of humility. Jesus was not ashamed to humble Himself as a servant, even to death on the cross. Just as He did not come to be served, but to serve, we are called to commit ourselves to serving others, considering their interests above our own. Humility is also a close associate of gratitude. To be humble is also to be grateful for the gifts you have. Our Marist story also shows us many examples of humility. As we prepare for the celebration of the feast of St Marcellin next week there is much we can learn about humility from the story of Marcellin’s journey. In exploring this value with our students there are many exciting ways forward as we challenge them to be young people who go about their lives in a way that brings good to the world. Last Friday we welcomed Bishop Ken to St Thomas More. He was so happy to meet students in their classrooms and to share afternoon tea with the staff. Our first combined schools Parish Family Mass was a tremendous celebration to finish the weekend. A very big thank you to all those students, staff and parents involved. This week we have the Year 3 Liturgy on Thursday at 2pm. We wish the year 3 classes well with this special celebration. Parents are most welcome to come along. We also wish our Year 6 students an amazing camp experience.

Many blessings for the week ahead. Ann-Maree 😊

Look at our amazing children at our lunchtime Wool Craft club – lots of knitting, pom poms and French knitting. We are having lots of fun and learning amazing new skills.
