Jeanette Lynes

The Small Things That End the WorldFrom the Giller-longlisted author of The Factory Voice comes a new novelin a similar vein – a story of the strength and resilience of three separatewomen, who, at three different points in history, are forced to make toughdecisions and come face-to-face with calamities outside of their control.

It’s 1954, and Sadie Wilder is focused on just one thing: the shotshe has to prove herself as the rootin’est, tootin’est, gosh darn bestbabysitter – or at least better than Wanda Keller, babysitter-extra-

ordinaire for the wealthy, posh Bannister family. When Wanda isunable to fulfill her duties, it is Sadie who leaps at the chance tobabysit the Bannister children, Bobby and Faith. Sadie is certain shecan deal with any obstacle that might come up, until it starts torain…and doesn’t stop.

Hurricane Hazel wreaks havoc on the Bannister house, and in the endSadie manages to save herself and the baby, Faith, from the destructionthat ravages the neighbourhood, but Bobby is missing. Sadie goes intohiding, fearing her failure to save Bobby means she will be punished.

Moving among Faith, Sadie, and Faith’s daughter, Amber, JeanetteLynes has crafted a beautifully written story of three women on themargins as each tries to get by on her own. The novel culminates inNew Orleans in 2005, as a second hurricane sets the stage for areunion and redemption.

Jeanette Lynes is the author of seven collections of poetry. Her mostrecent book of poetry, Bedlam Cowslip: The John Clare Poems (Wolsakand Wynn, Buckrider Books, 2015), received the 2016 SaskatchewanArts Board Poetry Award. Dave Margoshes

A Calendar of ReckoningFamily, death, love, longing, retrospection: these are the themes DaveMargoshes touches on in his new poetry collection, and first in almosta decade.

With careful attention to detail, and evocative turns of phrase,Dave Margoshes introspectively looks back on youth.Intriguing metaphors, reminiscent of pastoral imagery, cre-

ate a sharp contrast between the heavy subject matter of one’s ownmortality, and the beautiful, evocative comparisons between humani-ty and the rest of the animal kingdom, particularly birds and trees.Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, is juxtaposed with the desire to give into temptation, and become one with the world, as Margoshes makesmost evident in his final poem, “Wisdom”, a fitting end to a collec-tion that would have the reader struggling between reconciling theirpast and present.

Dimensions of an Orchard, the last poetry collection by DaveMargoshes, won the Anne Szumigalski Poetry Prize at the 2010Saskatchewan Book Awards. He’s published four other books of poet-ry and over a dozen other books, including novels and short storycollections. His poems have won a number of awards, including theinaugural Stephen Leacock Prize for Poetry, and have appeared wide-ly in Canadian literary magazines and anthologies, including twice inthe Best Canadian Poetry volumes. His Bix’s Trumpet and Other Storieswas the 2007 Saskatchewan Book of the Year and a ReLit Awardfinalist. His collection of linked short stories, A Book of Great Worth, from Coteau, was named one of Amazon.ca’s Top One HundredBooks of 2012. Chelsea Coupal

SedleyAlthough many readers may be familiar with stories about ruralSaskatchewan from the early 20th century, Chelsea Coupal’s poetrycollection Sedley tells a different story: one of small townSaskatchewan from a modern perspective.

While much of small-town living remains the same: farming isalways reliant on the weather regardless of new technology, after all, there is a sense of urgency and a need to escape in

Chelsea’s poetry; her stories of growing up on the prairies includereferences to cell phones and modern farmers who are more likebusinessmen. There is a musical cadence and rhythm to the poemsthemselves, which range from reminiscences on high school and firstlove, to darker themes like death and suicide that haunt the Sedleyresidents.

Accompanied by photographs of the town, shot by Chelsea herself, this debut collection of poetry weaves together both the personal anduniversal, harvesting not only the prairies, but a sense of communityand belonging.

Praise for Chelsea Coupal: “These poems have a luminous simplici-ty to them and beautifully bring rural Saskatchewan to life...I lookforward to seeing this manuscript in print someday.”

– Ayesha Chatterjee, City of Regina Writing Award judge.

Chelsea Coupal grew up in the village of Sedley, Saskatchewan andnow lives in Regina, where she completed a Master of Arts degree inCreative Writing. She won the 2017 City of Regina Writing Awardand was shortlisted for CV2’s 2016 Young Buck Poetry Prize. Herpoetry has appeared in literary journals across Canada, including Arc,CV2 and Grain.

A Place You’ll Never Be“An intriguing piece of fiction by a born and raised son of Saskatchewan.”

– Andrew Armitage, The Sun Times

Traversing the vast, serene wilderness in Northern Saskatchewan as part of a“pre-release canoe trip”, run as a pilot project in hopes of preparing fivefuture ex-convicts for life in the real world, no one knows quite what to

By the end of day six, the men find themselves grappling with violence, mutiny, and a plot to harvest and sell drugs down the river, all of which echoes off theincessant buzzing that surrounds them as thousands of mysterious insects followalong in the forest, destroying anything they come across – plants, animals, evenhumans…

Trevor Herriot, with photographs by Branimir Gjetvaj

Islands of GrassFrom esteemed naturalist Trevor Herriot and acclaimed nature photographerBranimir Gjetvag, Islands of Grass is a beautiful, well-researched call-to-actionand a passionately wrought love letter to the prairie grasslands that are rapidlydisappearing in the wake of modernity’s relentless push.

Before the arrival of settlers, the Great Northern Plain sprawled across thecentre of the continent and rivalled the African savannah for wildlife, withherds of bison and pronghorn antelope numbering in the millions. It was

also the home for species of birds and animals that lived nowhere else.

Today that range is threatened by human incursion and in some areas there areonly pockets of unadulterated prairie grassland left, small islands of a unique envi-ronment. In those small plots of grasslands species cling to survival, unable tothrive in any other environment.

In presenting the irreplaceable beauty and the complexity of the Grasslands, Trevorand Branimir ask the reader to both admire its majesty and consider its value. Fullof extraordinary photos supported by the thought-provoking prose of TrevorHerriot, this book will bring the wonder of the grasslands to a wider audience.
