The weekend of July 26, 2013

Rockland School of Ballet loaded up the car and headed to Bar Harbor,

Maine for the annual Maine Dance

Teachers Club summer workshop.

Students had the opportunity to

participate in a variety of dance genres over the course of two days.

Teachers from all over the country

traveled to Bar Harbor to teach dancers in their style. The board of

directors for the MDTC did a fabulous job reaching out and selecting

teachers to join this year’s summer

workshop. Students were taught by Hip-Hop dancer, actor and

choreographer Lancelot Theobald Jr. who introduced them not only to Hip-

Hop but styles such as Whacking and

Tutting. Jonathan Miele from Maine State Ballet School was there to teach

ballet along with Juliette Lauzier; also

known for her work at the Maine State

Ballet School. Students enjoyed learning a bit of Jazz, Contemporary

and Funk from Tara Tommasiello from

The Talent Factory in Rhode Island. From South Carolina, Christie Sirota

instructed the students in a fun and energetic tap class.

All dancers were challenged with new

dance moves and routines and did a

fabulous job. Rockland School of Ballet hopes that next year we can

bring even more students with us to

experience new and different styles of dance!

Rudolph Khametovich Nureyev was born March 17, 1938 in Irkutsk, Siberia. The only son and youngest child of a peasant family, Nureyev and his family fled from Germany when the USSR invaded the country and moved to Ufa Bashkir, Russia. They were so poor that they were unable to attend activities like the arts. Nureyev’s mother used to steal tickets and sneak her children into the opera. It was on one of these evenings, seeing dancer Zaituna Nazredinova, that Rudolph Nureyev decided that he too would become a great ballet dancer.

At age eleven Nureyev joined a ballet class under the instruction of Anna Udeltsova, and after a couple of years of tutelage, transitioned to Elena Vaitouich. Just four years later at age fifteen Nureyev was dancing professionally as an extra

at the local opera house where he secured his first position as a member of the corps de ballet. He toured Moscow with the company until turning seventeen at which time he joined the Leningrad Ballet School and studied under Alexander Pushkin. By the time he graduated Leningrad, Nureyev was offered a soloist contract with the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg.

Nueryev debuted with ballerina Natalia Dudinskaya, and during his time with the Kirov Ballet he danced in fifteen major rolls. In 1961, the Kirov Ballet company went on tour to Paris, and later that same year went to London. Along with them was Nureyev, touring in Paris and debuting in London.

In London, Nureyev met Dame Margot Fonteyn at her gala for the Royal Academy of Dancing. He was asked back the following year to dance with Fonteyn, and that was the beginning of their beautiful partnership. Their chemistry as a dance team was undeniable, and it captivated audiences for years. Although their partnership was never exclusive they often danced together and Nureyev’s gallery performance was the beginning of his long lasting relationship with the Royal Ballet, a company he stayed with through the mid 1970’s.

Not only was Rudolph Nureyev known for his dancing, but in 1964 he began to try his hand at choreography by revising famous and traditional pieces such as ‘Raymonda’ and ‘Swan Lake.’ In 1977 the Royal Ballet offered a position as Director of the company to Nureyev, however, he turned it down because he still wanted the opportunity to dance. The offer came once more though. In 1983 he was approached by the Paris Opera. This time he accepted as he would have the opportunity to continue dancing for six months out of the year. In addition to his role of director, he began to dance in films. Some of his works included, “Valentino” and “Exposed.” Over the course of his career he could be found in both large and small screen films as well as on stage dancing.

In January of 1993 Rudolph Nureyev succumbed to AIDS, passing away in Paris. He will forever be known to the world for his suspended leaps, fast turns, and expressive areas of dance and for his dynamic partnering with Margot Fonteyn and individual choreographic work. The dance world will forever be grateful for the contributions of Rudolph Nureyev.

Miss Emily’s Etiquette and

Modeling InstituteGive the Gift of Good Manners

Miss Emily’s Etiquette and Modeling Institute (EMI) will open this fall with four class offerings for ages 5 through teen!

Are you interested in strengthening your child's social skills? Would you like to help him/her be more aware of good manners and self-presentation? Are you interested in improving his/her ability to

manage his/her own behavior at home, at school, on play dates, and in restaurants? Are you concerned about peer-pressure and the role of social-media in their lives? While they may accomplish

amazing things technologically, are you worried about their face-to-face communication skills?

Take this opportunity to enrich your child’s knowledge of good behavioral skills that will enable him or her to grow into the well-refined gentleman or lady that

is waiting under the surface.

Class highlights will include:~ General Rules of Conduct/Basic Manners in the Home

~ Personal Grooming: How to Sit, Stand, Walk~ The Art of Correspondence: Thank You Notes, Greeting Cards, Invitations, Acceptances,

Regrets, Email, Texting, Instant Messaging~ Table Manners and The Important Art of Eating

~ Special Behavior/Special Events.~ Speaking, Greetings and Introductions: “Please”, “May I?”, “Excuse Me”, “Thank you”

~ A graduation party

Our classes will be kept small to that individual attention can be given to each student. This fall we will begin with Level One classes. In the winter EMI will look forward to offering Level

Two classes. Our philosophy is to provide the direction and the building blocks that young people need in order to

move comfortably through every social situation.
