The Gulf Building, bound by Main, Rusk, and Travis Streets was constructed in 1929 and was designed by famed local architect, Alfred C. Finn. The Art Deco building was Houston’s tallest building for several decades, and it remains emblematic of the architectural style in Houston. This application seeks to replace an existing canopy along Rusk Street and to install new signage at entrances on both Rusk and Main Streets. The new canopy on Rusk will be similar, though not identical, to the canopy recently installed at the corner of Travis and Rusk Streets. New mosaic pavers will be installed in vestibules at both entrances. Rusk Street There is an existing canopy on Rusk Street for Chase Bank that does not match or complement the building’s architecture. The canopy will be removed and replaced with a new canopy to identify the new food hall, called Finn Hall in honor of the building’s original architect, being constructed on the interior. The proposed new canopy will be smaller than the existing, protruding a smaller distance over the sidewalk and having a thinner attachment against the building. It will be installed with cable tie-backs. The new canopy will be painted aluminum to match the color of the new storefront design currently being installed as a separate project. LED light panels will be installed on the underside of the canopy to provide additional lighting to the entrance without impacting the historic building materials. The light panels will be arranged in a pattern to mimic the terrazzo flooring patterns on the building’s interior. There will be internally light LED channel letters with copper can edging and an acrylic face to mimic milk glass. These channel letters will be mounted on top of the canopy on three sides and will not impact the historic building exterior. The canopy will also utilize lettering cut into the canopy’s fascia and will be lit from within the canopy and will use the same acrylic made to look like milk glass. The original cast aluminum spandrel panels were removed when the existing canopy was installed, and they were replaced with a plain, undecorated panels. New decorative spandrel panels are proposed for this space. The new panels will feature a design that is complementary to the existing designs without being exact replicas. The existing storefront bay under the canopy contains four openings. Reading them from Travis Street towards Main Street, the first opening holds spandrel glass, while the remaining three hold doors. The spandrel glass opening hides a mechanical room behind it. This project proposes to replace the spandrel glass with an aluminum panel with additional signage. The aluminum panel will be painted to match the new storefront system being installed. The new doors for the storefront will be champagne-colored aluminum to match the new storefront design approved under a separate project, and the doors will include leather-wrapped handles. The canopy overall will be 11′-9″ from the ground and protrude 8′-0″ from the building, and it will be 14′-0″ wide and 15″ tall. The channel letters will be an additional 10″ tall, and each set of the letters will be 6′-3 ¾″ wide. Main Street An existing flag sign is located along Main Street near the Rusk Street intersection. The sign is located over a secondary entrance. The existing sign is dark glazing between the sign bands; there is no lettering on the sign. The proposed new sign will paint the existing sign bands black and remove the existing dark glazing. New metal work will span the full 15′-11″ width and will be installed between the sign bands to reflect

Art Deco design and styling in order to complement the historic building. The metal work be made from 2″ pieces, and it will support additional LED lit channel letters arranged in an arc. The channel letters will be copper can edging with a milk glass-imitation acrylic face. Each channel letter will be 1′-7 ½″ tall, and the channel letter sign overall will be 12′-9 ¾″ wide. An additional 7 ½″ tag line sign will be included. The tag line sign will be made from copper lettering and will not be illuminated. The font for this tag line sign is still being determined. New banner signs will also be installed on the existing columns flanking the Main Street entrance. The new banner signs will be mounted on the existing mortar joints or in existing holes to avoid harming the historic materials. The storefront for the Main Street entrance will also have vinyl window graphics applied to the glazing. The vinyl lettering will be in a Copper Metallic color to match the other new signage as well as the new storefront system. The same style of vinyl lettering will appear on the storefront windows on several bays on both Main Street and Rusk Street.

OUR DESIGN CONCEPT IS FOR AN ELEGANT AND LIGHTER SCALE CANOPY CLOSELY ALIGNED WITH THE MAIN/RUSK CORNER CANOPY DESIGN CONCEPT, INCORPORATING A SOLID METAL CANOPY ROOF WITH AN LED FLAT PANEL L IGHT IN THE SOFFIT.

THE DESIGN SHOWN IS DEEPER AND MORE PROMINENT THAN THE CANOPIES AT THE CORNER TO PROVIDE HEIRARCHY AND COVER TO THIS PRIMARY BUILDING ENTRANCE.

THE CANOPY WILL BE ALUMINUM, PAINTED TO MATCH THE COLOR OF THE NEW STOREFRONT BEING INSTALLED AROUND THE BUILDING IN A SEPERATE PROJECT AND GLASS TO MATCH THE EXISTING STOREFRONT GLAZING. THE LED PANELS ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CANOPIES WILL HAVE AN ORNAMENTAL METAL WORK PATTERN TO MATCH THE DETAIL WORK IN THE TERRAZZO INSIDE THE BUILDING.

WITH THE REDUCTION IN SIZE OF THE CANOPY, THE FRIEZE ELEMENTS WILL BE REPLACED WITH NEW ORNAMENTAL ALUMINUM PANELS TO MATCH EXISTING ADJACENT FRIEZES.
