FROM THE CHAIR
Last issue I asked for your help to let us know what you’d like to see happening in
RSCM Victoria. Thank you to all of you who contacted me to let us know both what
you’d like and also how you’d like to contribute. This month you will be receiving a
survey from the Victorian Branch Committee. We ask that you take a few moments
to complete the ten questions in it so that we get a clearer picture of how we can
best serve you and give you more “forte” for your membership “buck”! You can
access the survey on the webpage or go directly to https://www.surveymonkey.com/

We are currently working on a number of possible events for the latter part of the year which we will tell
you about as soon as we can. Meantime please claim the date of October 10 for a Br. Colin D. Smith
Festival. An Australian composer of liturgical music based in Sydney, Brother Colin directed the
massed choirs for various papal visits, composed the widely used Mass Shalom as well as a complete
collection of Responsorial Psalms and two albums of liturgical songs. Colin taught me much of what I
know about liturgical music making within the Catholic Church, inspired me to do liturgical training and
gave me my passion for choral singing, first in The Singers of David, and later in The John Paul
Singers. This October will be the tenth anniversary of his death. More can be read about Br Colin at
http://cathnews.acu.edu.au/510/141.php and further details will be shown on the RSCM Website as
they become available.
I’d still like to hear from you about how we might engage young people in RSCM and how we might
serve their needs. Please contact our branch committee if you have any suggestions.
Once again, please do take a moment now to complete the survey – it’s your RSCM and this is your
opportunity to help shape the organization into what best enriches your music ministry!
Warm regards,
Donrita Reefman

CHURCH MUSICAT THE CROSSROADS AGAIN? PANEL DISCUSSION
Members and friends of RSCM Victoria from churches across the state, both city and country
flocked to St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne for the RSCM Victoria Event on Monday evening 20
April. The panel discussion on church music was presented by St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal
School of Church Music Australia (Victoria Branch), and the University of Divinity. Those in
attendance joined in the conversation by singing the songs and asking the questions. The
evening’s discussion may be continued online. Please email [email protected]
to register for future communications, hopefully to include a transcript of the evening’s taped
proceedings.
The evening’s panellists were: Dr Paul Taylor (Liturgical Music Academic, Coordinator of Liturgy for the
Archbishop’s Office, Executive Secretary for the Bishops’ Commission for Liturgy, and Acting Director of Music,
St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral); The Revd Canon Professor Dorothy Lee (Musician, Theologian, Canon of St
Paul’s Cathedral and Dean of Trinity College Theological School); Mr Andrew Reid (Sometime Cathedral
Director of Music and Organist, now Director of the Royal School of Church Music in the United Kingdom);
Professor Peter Sherlock, chairperson (Theologian, Musician, Lay Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral and Vice-
Chancellor of the University of Divinity); The Revd Dr Peter Carolane (Musician, Theologian, and Lead Minister
of Merri Creek Anglican – a church plant in Clifton Hill); and Ms Fay Magee (Musician, Theologian, and Teacher,
based in country Victoria - Cowes, Phillip Island).
Contributors to the preparation and presentation of the evening included: Mr Philip Nicholls (Director of Music,
St Paul's Anglican Cathedral, Musician, Theologian, Musicologist, General Editor of the Australian Hymn Book
Company); and Mrs Roslyn Carolane (Assistant Organist St Paul’s Cathedral and member of RSCM Australia
(Victoria Branch) Committee, playing organ and piano).

HISTORY OF RSCM VICTORIA
If you have any recollections, photos, memorabilia or information you would like to share please phone, email or
post to Marion Dewar. This issue we hear from Peter Schulz, in Launceston, Tasmania.
Hello Marion,
St John's at the present time has the 3 Sunday services:
8 a.m. Eucharist with hymns (sometimes a la CD I believe, although often with the organ)
10 a.m. Family Service (the organ rarely used)
7 p.m. Evening Prayer (the organ is I believe used at this service).
I have played there very occasionally as a relief person, however Holy Trinity keeps me on the run most of the
time.
Things have stayed fairly quiet there since Gaylene Cohen resigned some time ago. Things have stayed fairly
quiet there since Gaylene Cohen resigned some time ago. When Bill Pierce held sway, she was the assistant/
deputy.
Holy Trinity today observed the Sunday after Anzac Day including elements for Good Shepherd Sunday.

So, we were very ANZAC. Our rector is a reserve Navy Chaplain and our associate priest is a retired RAAF
chaplain. I think you may get the drift. However, no Catafalque party; that happens on Defence Sunday.

Thanks for publishing my potted history: it is a long time since anything of mine has appeared in print. Few of our
readers will remember me. Thelma in Traralgon and Dr Hayden Downing whose name always appears next to
mine in the alphabetical list of individual RSCM members will. Hayden and I were both at Maryborough HS in the
1940s.He still sings in one of the choirs at All Saints St Kilda.
A postlude to my musical career. Every Sunday morning I go to a retirement hostel in Newborough. My dear
friend Barbara, who sang in many choirs that I directed, is a resident and we raise a hideous squawk each week
when we sing along together in Songs of Praise. I keep the door firmly shut on these occasions.
Thanks for the fine work you do for the RSCM.
