From the Chairman of the Board…

Another ESA Foundation year is almost in the books. May 31 ends the fiscal year for the Foundation and all the numbers get crunched to see where we ended the year and more importantly, how well we can start the new year. It is exciting, and sometimes interesting, to see where we end up financially.

All the Directors and committee members are getting ready for convention in Phoenix. For the last several years, the Board has had a no-host type out-ing on Saturday before convention just to kick back, meet up with friends and have a good time. This year we will be meeting at 1130 The Restaurant right across from the Sheraton Grand Hotel to enjoy dinner and a time to relax be-fore the week gets started. If you are interested, there is still time to get signed up, please contact Tammy Akines at [email protected].

Speaking of fun, Linda Schmidt has been working all year planning the Foun-dation Fund Fest for Tuesday, July 17. We will have some fun new plans this year as well as some of the same games and items that everyone al-ways enjoys. I know we have some special items for the auction block and we are sure to have some fun state “baskets” as always. Please come back to check in on what all is going on. I bet you can find something you want to take home with you.

As in the past few years, the state counselors’ workshop will be on Wednes-day morning and the annual meeting on Friday morning. The agenda is still in the works but rest assured we are planning on several speakers about the grants and scholarships programs as well as some other special presenta-tions. We sure look forward to seeing you in Phoenix.

This year, in the IC News Bulletin, the ESA Foundation had articles each month about all of the different aspects and projects. I hope you had the op-portunity to read at least a few of them and found something of interest. We have enjoyed being able to explore and share topics to the ESA member-ship.

We will be getting the final scholarship information out soon. For the students, this is an anxious time and as donors, we are always interested to see who was awarded scholarships. It seems most people are interested in this information above many other topics and that is great to know. None of it would be possible without sponsors just like you. It is so important that we keep on supporting the Foundation and there will always be a need to help others.

Safe travels to each of you traveling to IC and we will see you soon.

Take Care

MEET OUR ESA FOUNDATION DIRECTOR CANDIDATES

We are fortunate to have the following qualified ESAF members who have been submitted for the

three Director positions. The following is a brief synopsis of their nomination forms.

Rosalee Echele

Rosalee Echele, St. Charles, MO, has been the Office Manager for allergists since 1979, handling all of the financial issues, including payroll and taxes. She has been a member of the ESA Foundation since 1982 and became a Life Active Member in 1997. She and her husband started an endowment in 2002 and a scholarship has been awarded every year since 2005. Rosalee was elected to the Foundation board

in 1995 and served 2-three year terms. In 2000, Rosalee developed the “ESA Foundation” website and was instrumental in transitioning to on-line scholarship applications. Rosalee chaired the first of many Casio Night (Foundation Fund Fest) fundraisers for the Foundation, which she continued to chair through 2011. In 2010 she was elected to fill a 1 year vacancy of a Director position and was elected the next year to a 3 year term. In 2014 she was elected to another three year term. While off the elected board last year, she served in an appointed role as Web Chairman, Planned Giving Chairman and Advisor. I have seen the Foundation grow both financially and with the many programs which have been developed over the years. I hope to be able to share my talents and experience with the ESA Foundation as an elected Director again.”

We have one (1) bylaw change and one (1) Standing Rule to consider this year. Please read and be

prepared to vote on these at the Annual Meeting.

Bylaw Change:

Article XIII. United States Postal Mailing Permit

Currently reads:

The ESA Foundation shall hold a US Postal Mailing Permit to be renewed annually. This permit may be used at designated “drop stations” by members who wish to participate in mailing ESA Foundation materials. Members using the Foundation permit must include ESA Foundation information in their publication.

Change to read:

The ESA Foundation shall hold a US Postal Mailing Permit to be renewed annually.

Reason for change:

There are currently no “drop stations” and the current permit bulk mailing regulations make it is unfea-

sible for members to use the mailing permit. The permit is used by Headquarters to send out ESA

Foundation materials.

Bylaw Changes

Standing Rule Change:

Standing Rule X.

Sample & Bailey CPA shall serve as the auditor for the ESA Foundation until changed by a vote of the Board of Directors.

Change to read:

A Certified Public Accounting firm shall serve as the auditor for the ESA Foundation.

Reason for change:

This is a housekeeping change.

I recently read a quote by Rasheed Ogunlaru…He is a leading life coach, motivational speaker and business / corporate coach. The quote was: “Legacy is not what's left tomorrow when you're gone. It's what you give, create, impact and contribute today while you're here that then happens to live on.”

I think we have a misconception that Planned Giving is only to be considered by Senior Citizens. As someone in that age group, I personally feel a need to leave some sort of legacy for those people I will never meet so Les and I started our family Endowment 16 years ago with the hope that scholar-ships will continue to be available after we are gone.

I recently thought that maybe I should ask one of my granddaughters if she has given any thought to “her” planned giving. I haven’t asked her yet…but I am going to. Why? Because she is a Financial Advisor and probably works with many people on “their” Planned Giving.

OK, so she has only been a Financial Advisor for 10 months and is still learning everything that is involved with Wills, Living Trusts, Beneficiary Designations and Charitable Gift Annuities and every-thing else that goes with her job.

This is her first job since graduation from college. She had to move to another city so she has lots of expenses, new apartment and the joy of decorating, selecting utilities (in Texas, that seems to be a monumental task), selecting auto insurance to go with her car payments, renters insurance, etc., etc., etc. I’m sure that she hasn’t spent any time on her own Planned Giving yet.

It would be interesting to find out exactly when most people decide on the time for them to take that step. Is it when you get married? Is it when you have you first child? I tried to google that question and was surprised that no one actually addresses that. There are hundreds of web sites that ad-dress how to set it up but nothing that really addresses when you so take that step.

If YOU haven’t taken that first step yet, maybe you need to talk to your legal or financial advisor to get some advice. Set up a trust fund for your family? Possibly take a small insurance policy that could name your favorite charity or other non-profit as a beneficiary? There are so many ways to begin your Planned Giving.

And now I need to include the Public Service Announcement: Please consider the ESA Foundation when you do your Planned Giving.
