VOLUME XXVIII, NO. 62 March - April | 2017 Can you believe it’s almost spring? I love this time of year. It’s ripe with new life and fresh beginnings; an opportunity to clear the clutter and get our house in order. With that being said, we’ve been reviewing financials from previous years, and discovered that we could save up to $80,000 per year in credit card charges if existing members switched their payment method from credit card to auto- draft from a checking or savings account. That’s a lot, considering those funds could be used for additional staffing for group classes, equipment for both adults and children, and exciting new events for all our members. In an effort to try and bring this value back to your membership, new members who opt not to pay by direct bank account payment will be subject to a $5 monthly credit card processing fee. There’s added incentive to switch, too; members that pay directly from their checking account receive one free guest pass per month. The majority of new members have already selected direct payment, so we’re hoping that those of you who haven’t will make the switch this year. Help us help you add value to your membership! There are several exciting news items to share with you this month. We have renewed our partnership with The Christ Hospital, so their physicians and staff will continue to provide health talks and resources for us each month. Last year we hired our own physical therapist and Wellness Clinician, Vic Troha, who has done (and will continue to do) an excellent job with the injury, hip, and exercise consultations he provides free of charge each week. We also recently partnered with HMR, the “Best Fast Weight-Loss Program of 2017” according to U.S. News & World Report. In addition to our health and wellness programming, we’re enhancing our other parts of the Club as well. Look for specialty group exercise classes at least twice a month – from yoga to spinning to Body Pump, we know you’ll find something new that keeps you engaged and motivated. The parking lot construction is also well underway; we’re hopeful that it will be completed in time for the busy pool season ahead. We appreciate your patience during this construction phase, and hope you are as excited as we are for it to open. In conclusion, I’d like to assure everyone that everything we do is a direct result of listening to our members, and tracking their behaviors and desires at the Club. We will constantly improve to better serve you, and we thank you for this opportunity. Please consider switching your payment method to help support these efforts. Exercise Optimization with MyZone Are you familiar with the Zone? The Zone is your optimal heart rate for physical output, the perfect balance of energy for physical gain. In other words, the Zone is where you want to be to make the most of your workout. The MyZone program is a combination of wearable fitness technology and dynamic exercise programs designed to improve personal results by focusing on zone optimization. MyZone doesn’t measure speed, cadence, or weight lifted; it measures the effort you put in. The MZ-3 fitness belt can sync with cardio equipment, downloadable fitness apps (including Apple Health), and bike computers to monitor and record your progress. It’s a digitally intuitive way to get smarter about your workouts, and a new way for members to improve their exercise routines. Contact: Michael Downs

Member Advisory Board The Member Advisory Board provides a communication channel between Cincinnati Sports Club management and its members. The Board represents a collective mix of various membership levels, membership types, and member demographics to ensure that everyone has a voice at the table. Our last meeting was in December, when we discussed the parking lot expansion, annual survey results, and open play on the indoor field. The next meeting will be held this month, to talk about the upcoming summer season.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Parties at the Club One of the best things about your membership is your access to the social events we host to bring members together, away from the workout. From January through March, Happy Hour on Friday night at 5:30pm offers something for everyone! Every Happy Hour is really two parties in one: we feature family fun on the indoor soccer field, and adult-only area with live music in the Staircase Lounge.

Each week features complimentary light fare by area restaurants, local musicians, and live entertainment for members of all membership types. This month, we have the Drake Planetarium’s Lego Lab, a magic show, a March Madness celebration, and Reds baseball celebration, and live music from Jeff Henry and Josh McIntosh & Company in the works, so mark your calendar for every Friday at 5:30pm and join the party!

For a more culinary-focused celebration, be sure to check out the Third Tuesday Tasting Party on the third Tuesday of every month. We host chefs from Cincinnati’s favorite restaurants, offer gourmet fare by the bite, and pair your food with an optional wine tasting by Market Café. Sidekix Saucy Asian Grill will be featured on March 21st, and Mazunte will join us on April 18th. It’s absolutely FREE to attend, but you’ll want to register early – the Tasting Parties sell out often. Members can bring ONE free guest this year, so appropriate fees will apply to additional guests. A $10 fee will be applied to no-show reservations and walk-ins, if space is available. Contact: Julie Goodchild

Lecture Series Whether you’re fascinated by history, want driving safety tips, or need nutritional know-how, this free lecture series featuring local experts delivers a new timely, relevant topic each month. Youth Squash Hello! My name is Coach Deerav Moolani, and I’m the new director of the T Squash Academy. I started playing Squash at the age of 12; my dad had his own Squash Academy, so I fell in love with the speed, excitement and creativity of the game early. After about two years of

playing, one of my dad’s coaches fell sick one day and he asked me to “feed” the ball (be his assistant) while he was doing a private lesson.

I fell in love with teaching that day, and started teaching on my own part time soon after. It has always been a powerful, gratifying feeling, in the sense that I feel like I’m experiencing what someone is learning when I teach them myself. It’s helped me grow my passion for the sport, so I went on to represent Pune University before becoming part of the Squash Team that won the All-India University Gold Medal in 2012.

I’m very grateful for this new chapter in my life, and look forward to growing with the Cincinnati squash community!

Hit the Courts This Year Tennis season is just around the corner! If you’re just getting started, or want to sharpen your game for match play when it gets warm, consider tennis clinics with head pro Jeff Roman. Adult clinics begin Monday, April 3rd, and lessons for junior players (14 and under) begin April 11th, with am and pm instruction available. Pick up a brochure at the Club for exact schedule details. If you’re looking for a different sport to enjoy, make an effort to pick up pickleball this year. Combining elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, pickleball is one of the fastest-growing racquet sports in the country. We offer Quickstart Pickleball classes to help our members learn how to compete in just one week; email Jeff, or look for a brochure on your next visit for class information. Contact: Jeff Roman
