From the Dean’s Desk May 2013 A Message from the Dean As we bid the Class of 2013 farewell, we wish them all the best. They have been well prepared by an outstanding, dedicated faculty to meet all the challenges of an ever‐changing profession. I’d like to thank the faculty, as well as everyone at NJDS. You each play a role in the success of our students, whether large or small. Without you, they could not have achieved their goals. Next year’s class will graduate from the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. While their diplomas may not read New Jersey Dental School, they, too, will be among the top new dentists in the country, thanks to each of you. Enjoy the summer, Cameras ϐlashed and cheers rang out when 113 members of the NJDS Class of 2013 ofϐicially became Doctors of Dental Medicine. Two postgraduate students earned Certiϐicates in Orthodontics and two earned Masters of Dental Science in Orthodontics. Held at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, the ceremony was the ϐinal one of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Most of the schools will be merging with Rutgers and the School of Osteopathic Medicine will merge with Rowan University. UMDNJ interim President Denise Rodgers told the graduates that change is necessary and new beginnings are a part of life. “This university has much to be proud of, as we move into the next phase of our life,” she said. “When thinking of UMDNJ don't cry because it's over, smile because it once existed.” Kevin Barry, chairman of the university's Board of Trustees, told the students UMDNJ has had many names, as it took on new programs and merged with existing schools. “One thing that has never changed and will never change is the unending commitment to our core values of teaching, research, community service and patient care,” he said. “This is what has made UMDNJ great, not its names or afϐiliations.” Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi also addressed the gathering, calling the graduation historic. “I know that all of you will go on to new‐found success in your new tomorrow,” he said. A physician and neuroscientist with more than 40 years in clinical practice, Dr. Barchi pointed out that the new health care providers are entering their ϐields at a critical time; the Affordable Care Act is a ϐirst step in providing health coverage for the uninsured, but the cost of today’s health care system is unsustainable. “Never in our history has a class of health care graduates had such an opportunity to change their profession, to shape policy and to make a difference,” he said. He told the graduates they will be able to accomplish things that those who came before them never could. “You will change people’s lives, and you will recast American health care into a model that provides the highest quality care with the best outcomes at a cost that the nation can sustain.” He added that his only regret was that he was not among the new graduates, but is one of today’s graying physicians. “My very best to each and everyone of you.” UMDNJ Holds 43rd and Final Commencement Top: Dr. Carmine LoMonaco carries the NJDS gonfalon, leading the faculty procession. Dr. Thomas Cangialosi

Thomas Cangialosi, DDS, professor and chair, Orthodontics, received the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award from the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) at its 2013 Annual Session in Philadelphia in May. The award was created in 1936 to commemorate the achievements of Dr. Albert H. Ketcham, one of the pioneers in orthodontics. The award is presented annually to an individual who has made a notable contribution to the science of orthodontics. In presenting the award, ABO president Dr. Scott Jamieson said Dr. Cangialosi has a lifetime record of outstanding contributions to the art and science of orthodontics. “To say that Dr. Cangialosi is a revered teacher and a consummate mentor, to his students and those who know him personally, is an understatement,” he said. “He is the epitome of an ethical professional, and his moral fiber is absolute. He is richly deserving of this award.”
